Can i help with beta mapping or other

It has long followed the The Dark Mod, and only recently became possible to download and view it. This wonderfully. I admire. There desire to help you. I mapper. Experience about seven years. Make maps for Half-Life & Half-Life 2. There was never a bump in the team, did everything solo. Download impressed DarkRadiant, tried ... Need relearning :) , but the main already understood. All very similar to Valve Hammer Editor for HL 1/2. Here is a list of my work:

I downloaded DarkRadiant recently, and inspired this remarkable project began to absorb it. It is now feel quite comfortable in it. Smudge already accustomed to button ESC:). Now check the possibility DarkRadiant on Thief `s Den base.

Finding your way around darkradiant isn't too bad. I myself came from a hl1 and hl2 mapping background.

The author said he translated himself with particular use of Google. For all that Google translates a little better then Babelfish :)

I noticed in your fire_element.avi video that you have "Sanctus" playing in the background. I'm a Lacrimosa fan myself :wub: .

 

Do you speak any German? If you do then there are plenty of native Germans on the forum that will help you out if English is giving you trouble.

 

My german is rather limited (I only know a few words and I can't speak a complete sentence) and I'm only getting started on learning Russian (I'm still learning the alphabet).

Yes, I believe you can be helpful - although to be fair with all the other applicants, you'll have to show that you're capable of producing good stuff with DarkRadiant. Just show us some good work you made with the editor (possibly with the Thief's Den material) and I'm confident you'll get accepted.

Note that it's only a small test map that Zakhar has made to show his ability to work with DarkRadiant. It's not a full mission.

I helped Zakhar a little (testing, a couple of models). To my mind, it came out not bad :)

 

EDIT: The mission works correctly with Thief's Den only. While testing it in The Dark Mod I found some bugs with the lighting (I don't know cause of these bugs) and some others (like lacking model of the chest :)).

Very cool! I'm playing with current SVN so of course there are some expected issues, but you've got some really nice areas here, ambience, etc. Hell there's already a potential mission here.

 

Needs more ambient light (on my system) though. :)

 

Edit: wow, I was commenting only part-way through, based on 3 rooms. There's much more. This is really good. If this is a 'test mission' I can't wait to see the real thing. ;)

 

So far, I can't find the

key to get out

, or the

way to move the bookcase aside

. I'm hoping they're not SVN vs TD incompatibility issues, but I don't want to cheat in DarkRadiant.

Hum, I didn't notice that the map has no ambient light. I explored it in DarkRadiant at first, so I didn't have problems with finding items :)

 

Yeah, it definitely needs a very low ambient to lift those pitch black shadows, and also lower the intensity of the regular lights...as they're quite washed out right now. I think we'll see this a lot with first time mappers.

 

That being said, it's an exceptionally well done map. :) I wouldn't have guessed it was based on Thiefs Den. Very different feel.

New Horizon,  I didn't use ambient_light...

 

SneaksieDave, not only 3 rooms, you can see street outside the window. A key needed for opening the chest, but there is enough gold on the map for finishing mission. The key not needed in principle. A secrect passage? Hehe.... Look for it.

You definitely need to use one, otherwise your map will suffer from Doom 3's pitch black shadows.

 

Draw a single light around your entire map and make it ambientnfo or ambientlight_nofall. I forget what it's called, but it's something like that. Basically, that creates a non-shadowcasting, non-directional light. Set it to something very low. Use the ambient light from Thiefs Den if you're unsure how bright you should make it. Then, lower the intensity of your 'real' lights, so that they aren't washing out from being too bright.

New Horizon, are you testing it with current TDM version or with Thief's Den? As I wrote, I found bugs with lighting in TDM - the light of the candles is too bright, and casting double shadows (moving and still ones). Probably, the second light source appears near the candles. There is no this bug in Thief's Den on this map.

 

I agree with you concerning an ambient light.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
