DigitalNapalm: Beta Mapper application

New Horizon

Yeah some of the ideas are definitely on the far side, but if he does some serious mapping and tried to implement some of the ideas it might be actually a good thing to see what's possible and discover new rare interesting bugs :D So, could be very helpful.

But yeah, we need some of the screen shots here in this thread to keep who's who straight and see if there is some good mapper potential :)

How familiar are you with the TDM setting?

Also, what kind of map would you like to make if you became a betamapper?

My first experience with Thief was when the Dark Project demo came out in PCGamer a month or two before the game's actual release. I was instantly hooked. I haven't mapped much except with UEd 1.1 and 2.5, and I doubt you can really count my experience on Build with Duke 3D, editors have become much more complicated than Build ever could have been.

I understand enough about programming architecture to know basically how that stuff works, as I was a computer science student about 10 years ago, about the time of the end of the OOP revolution. We got to play with C++ and Delphi (OO Pascal for windows, essentially).

Gaming wise, I've been playing computer games since I was 4. I used to game on a commodore 64. :) God bless Jumpman and Lode Runner.

Nice to know. ^_^ Two other questions:

How familiar are you with The Dark Mod setting?

I know the Dark Mod isn't in "The City" There's no one named "Garrett" and its supposed to be an update to t1/t2 gameplay as opposed to any sort of continuation of things from the Thief world, just similar in as many aspects as the team can get away with.

Map wise, I already have an idea in mind. I like the maps that keep my heart beating fast not only because of the close calls and near misses, but because of the "whats going to happen next?" factor. As much as I hate to admit it, I think that the Shalebridge Cradle was one of my favorite gaming experiences *ever.* So I want to try to build something on the scary side, if at all possible. Something that recreates that frantic charge through the mission with the heart thumping loud and hard, and all you can think is "get out, get out, get out!" over and over.

So far, the map I have starts out in a hotel, and you need to get underneath the hotel into the sewers. I'd like to be able to have objective triggered doors, similar to how the Cradle worked... Beyond that, I'm not 100% sure where I want to take it until I have a better idea of what's available to me. I know I want there to be a big "Oh Em Gee" part where you stumble on something BIG... and you have to do something seemingly impossible so you can get out.

That's not really the case. While we wanted to be somewhat similar in appearance, the setting differs in a number of important ways. It would be a good idea to read up on the setting information in the wiki: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php/Universe

Seems like the world has a lot more open possibility that the restriction of the Thief world. I'm excited for that.

There's not too much information on the Necromancers, and if at all possible, I'd be more than happy to maybe flesh it out a bit.

Some parts of the "Universe" are kept vague for now, because we could probably spend the next year arguing over them. A lot of aspects will probably be fleshed out a bit more when someone makes an FM featuring them. So if you have some FM ideas in mind, I'd say just start building the FM and let the story about your particular group of Necromancers develop from the mission.

There's a whole page about necromancers.

There's nothing like there is about the Inventors, Mages, or Builders

The confusion stems probably from the fact that the Universe pages are not linked quite as they should, f.i. from the page above you can only get back to the category, but not to the overview page (or at least I don' see how).

Now added a link to the Category page, but some pages like "World at Large" could feature backlinks to "Universe", too.

That's because those three groups are all...well, groups. Necromancers do not have any specific organization, group, or guild. That leaves less to talk about.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry about the hiatus. I've been doing a lot of lurking. I haven't had a ton of extra time because I started a new job. Any news/info about getting a hold of the TDM files? I have been slowly working on my map, and the sewer section is pretty much completed. I have been working with a lot more patches as of late because I understand them better, and because I'm in a cave/burrick tunnel area in my map. I'll post some screenies when I get a chance. I shut my cable off because I just couldn't spare the cash, so updates and posts will be slow until I get connected again.

...Any suggestions when working with patches? I have a lot of "extra" patch material that is in the void... and was wondering what I could do to minimize it.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
