Amisfield Tower - a recreation in Dark Radiant

Get some trees in front of those walls or some ivy growing up them and they're not so boring anymore.

Did you mention what the performance was like? Could you put this sort of building in a nice, not too large, setting and walk around in game?

What do you see when you turn out the light? I can't tell you but I know that it's mine.

It is, but probably not how you think! I could see in the photograph that the real image is actually take from very far away with a narrow field of view and cropped itself, so that's the approach I had to take to get the perspective and angles to closely match and to avoid fisheye.

I used the giant twelve megapixel shots Doom 3 is capable of ("screenshot 4000 3000") and then cropped the tiny tower from the center of it.

Here is the large shot, originally 4000x3000, shrunk down to 640x480:

@SneaksieDave - thanks! I think the largest part of making have a more realistic "photo" look is the lighting. I have the low sharp parallel sunlight coming in from the left, a dim parallel blue light from the upper right (as the general light of the eastern sky) and a somewhat bright ambient all around so the shadows aren't too stark.

You could have tried changing your FOV to like 50 or lower, then just back up until the whole building is in view, but you did a good job of simulating a telephoto shot, flattening the perspective etc.

Beautiful work though, very detailed and realistic.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Beautiful work....very encouraging. So, how much longer until there's a public release??? I can't wait to get started.

There's a farmer's field that I bike past quite often. There is a small root cellar entrace into the side of a hill that is very creepy looking. I started a DromEd mission around it, but decided to wait for Dark Mod. There must be lots of people chomping at the bit.

...and you can apply for Beta Mapper status and gain access to the full assets now.

I think I'll go the LordSavage route and use the Thief's Den resources, follow the tutorials and see what happens.

Rock on!

Man, that is an extremely life-like recreation, great work, Komag! :) One look at that castle and you want to go inside, and one wonders what dangers and treasures Garrett might find within. :) Just goes to show how powerful the Doom III engine is when you have someone good using it. You can make just about anything, and make it look fantastically realistic, if you have the level design skills.

I just upgraded my PC recently, so bring on the lavishly detailed castles, churches and mansions in the Thief fan missions. :)

Thanks for the kind words! I have set it aside for a few days but I plan to flesh it out, build an interior with many rooms and such, and make a small town around the area for a little mission :) Maybe I'll have it done in couple months or more.

If you want to recycle parts of my old mill map, feel free to do so (the front is also modelled after a photo, but not really as cool as yours :)

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
