You've probably noticed we're being hit with a lot of spam at the moment. We're trying to track down the cause; in the meantime, try to ignore it.

I just activated the topic moderation feature for this specific forum. All new topics will have to be approved by me from this point on, until we resolved the issue with all these spam accounts.

TTLG started getting hit by a lot of spam lately too, they forced registrations to be approved by an admin while they figured it out as well. Wonder why this is happening so much lately.

Probably because this software got an update and a lot of exposure lately:

  • 1 month later...

I removed almost 200 bogus accounts today - it's possible that I hit a false positive among all those accounts and I might have deleted a legitimate account. I apologise if that happened - please re-register in this case (and maybe drop me a PM so that I won't delete your account a second time).

We got more spam accounts in the meantime, like http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?showuser=2863 It seems the spammers register as fast as they can :(

Yeah, I don't even try to keep up, otherwise I spend half an hour each day in the Admin Control Panel. I'll do another cleansweep next week.

is there anything we can do to stop them from subscribing (that we don't do already?)

I'm assuming we send newcomers an email with a link that they have to click to activate the account? If so, can we modify that email so instead of the link we put some modified description of the url that only a human can type in? (for now) eg,

Please construct and type the below address into your web browser to activate your account...

You need to add .html to the word activate...

Then add .net to modetwo

Then add the first to the second with a / in between.

OK, needs more thought than that but hopefully it might work?

That's a pretty good idea Fidcal, keeps out the robot spammer programs AND the idiots!

:D:laugh:

I wouldn't make it as complicated but a "custom" captcha like "add the word orange at the end of the url" or "type orange" in the box next to the captcha would foil the robots. Hopefully we are not spammed by cheap chinese guys or something :o

I switched on topic moderation again

Topic or new account moderation? Either way, there are two new spam posts this morning.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
