Are there actually two entities in the .map file?

edit: Or is this what you are saying with "commenting out the enttiy def lines"?

Nah, sorry, ignore me. I was using "weapon_firearrow" instead of "ammo_firearrow_small". Somehow, our methods on sorting entites is not really good

If you want some real confusion, consider folders:

/Light sources

/Lights

/Moveables/Lights

huh.gif

Since these were sorted by me, I defend it here:

"Light sources" - lights without any models

"Lights" - static lights with models

"Moveable/Lights" - models moveable lights

Now I admit I was equally confused the last time I looked at them. But then, how would you sort them?

If you put "moveable lights" under lights, people will look for them under moveables. etc?

However, feel free to resort them so that it makes more sense, usually you only need to sort the base class into a new folder with editor_DisplayFolder and it is done :)

Btw, I moved the Arrows to "Internal" so only "Weapons/Ammo/Arrows" remains and the mapper can't accidentily put the arrows that are attached to the weapon into the map :)

From a still confused and fresh viewpoint, it seems that "light sources" and "lights" could be merged. The former includes candleflames and the latter includes lamps. Close enough. They're still both sources, and both "lights". Then we can hope that if users want something that moves, they'd check the moveable dir. Gets rid of one folder at least.

I dunno, the whole thing is confusing as hell. I'm not sure even why we still have "atdm:" prefixes, as they don't help in this type of case one bit, and in fact make it worse. Our stuff is separated off from unusable D3 stuff, and our stuff is not consistently named anyway. And the "a" is just about sorting, but it doesn't help when you have an "atdm" item next to a true "a..." item. There's a current DR issue requesting within-string search for the type-ahead stuff, which is currently defeated by "atdm", and the prefix will become even more irrelevant if that request is fulfilled.

lights/no_models

lights/static

Not, if we ALWAYS put all lights under lights. The problem is that we have an N-Dimensional matrix and try to squeeze it into a linear description. The only way to properly solve it is, if we attach tags to each def, like "Light, Movable, Model, etc." and the editor shows you a list based on that tags, instead just a tree with fixed paths. This way the user can look for Moveables if he wants to see movables, and find everything, but if he looks for Light he would find all lights including those objects. The same approach would be also good for textures, because there the same problem applies as well.

I think such a strategy could be implemented without any reorgs, as it would be transparent for the user. Organziation of the paths, would also be less critical then.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
