Darkradiant and Windows 2000

Recommended Posts

Recently, I tried some of the newer snapshots (pre9 and 10) and these don't start on my system.

I'm using Windows 2000 (SP4).

The problem is the function "freeaddrinfo" missing from "ws2_32.dll". For systems older than XP "freeaddrinfo" is defined in "wspiapi.h" as a macro to some other function. But this header isn't included anywhere. I think the dll is used by "libxml2".

Does anybody know if I can just include it without breaking something? Or maybe use a new version of the dll?

Sounds like some sort of common problem when it comes to libxml2. I'll have to do some research about this, but I can't make any promises at this point.

Maybe upgrading the libxml2 sources to the most recent version helps.

Yes, that's expected, as the #included headers will behave differently when being compiled under Win2k, as the headers check for the existence of that symbol at compile time.

What I can do is to upgrade the libxml2 libraries for the Win32 build and upload a new snapshot to test for you. What I can't really do is to actually support Win2k as platform for DarkRadiant as it is an 8-year old OS by now, which I haven't available anywhere near me.

Can you test this snapshot on your end?

I upgraded to libxml 2.7.2 and disabled its HTTP/FTP support, which was (I think) the only libxml module using the socket WS2_32.DLL. Maybe this helps, but I can't be sure that nothing else is using that socket library.

Am I really the only one left using 2000?

Probably.

Ok, I've committed the new project files and the upgraded libxml2 sources with the disabled HTTP/FTP code. This makes linking against WS2_32.LIB unnecessary and should also decrease the number of dependencies for the application, which is a nice side effect.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
