sticky creep

I had posted this over on ttlg.com, but figured it'd be better to check the wiki, first :P

I saw that there is a way to make the run key be toggle-able. Is there a way to do the same for the creep effect?

Personally I hate holding down more than one key to move, I can make the run a toggle. I would hope that doing the same for creep would be do-able.

Thanks for listening :)

(great job on everything you taffers are doing)

If they don't offer a choice, it might help you to set your left Alt key as your creep, or your even your space key. That frees up your fingers to keep directing your movements. I personaly have two usable buttons next to the space-bar that i use for creep and crouch.

I really wish they would come out with a gaming keyboard that gave the thumb multiple things it could do. It can press multiple buttons in 4 directions, but all its tasked for is......Space-bar! It could manipulate another mouse-pad movement or swivel a directional!

Belkin's Gameboard

Saitek's Gameboard

Logitechs G13 Gameboard (UK site)

The other notable one was the MS sidewinder, which was like a mouse on a joystick, shame they never made an analog one for use in FPSs

My source: Wikipedia

Now more-or-less back on-topic, I find it easiest to use Shift for non-toggle controls, usually I use it for crouching but you spend so much time crouched in thief that it's better to toggle it, so I use it for creep instead and set couch toggle to Ctrl. I agree that traditional keyboards don't have enough keys for your pinky and thumb, I usually have run set to Alt, but that makes a running jump Alt+W+Space, you might as well slam your head against the keyboard.

I checked our bugtracker. Yes: toggleable creep is a feature we're tracking. There are many team members and contributors (including myself) that like the sticky creep.

And while we're on the the subject of keyboard binds, I've been trying to get used to ESDF for a workset. It allows my left hand to stay on the keyboarding "home row", and also lets me use both Z for creep, l-shift for run, and alt for crouch.

I always use ESDF in all games that I can, because it frees up three more keys for whatever I want (Q,A,Z), very nice and helpful for many games, and my fingers are long enough so my pinky can still reach Shift and Ctrl when I need to

I also use ESDF, for the same reasons. I always use q = reload, a = run, g = use. In the interest of realism, or immersion\believability, for things that would, in real life, cause me to look somewhere besides forward to use, i set those keys away from my hand so i have to look away from the screen.

Arrowkeys were fine for quite a while, but now games have gotten so much more...complicated. You need more modifiers in-hand. WASD came about some time after the growing "Doom" FPS era. People could now have ease of access to extra modifiers (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) as well as other nearby keys for extra actions (Q E ZXC RFV and Spacebar)

Some games (I suppose TDM for example) added an extra modifier for movement: creep. Now 6 sets of movement on two modifiers are available: Run, walk, creep, crouch-run, crouch-walk, crouch-creep. How will that fit on arrow keys? I barely fit it in comfortably on WASD. With all the more sensitive movements and more precise actions, you need more keys in your reach and muscle-memory.

Also, I think the reason I'm growing towards the ESDF keyset is because I'm STILL used to thief weapon binds.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
