@Obsttorte Ah, yep, that was it. Didn't know the actual visportal texture needed to touch the door, thought just the brush did. Thanks!

The brush face that has the visportal texture on it is the visportal. The remainder of the brush is irrelevant, but those faces should all be nodraw. Otherwise AI won't be able to walk through the portal.

Speed potion: http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/17367-custom-items/

Don't try to make an item that alters player movement via the console commands; my first prototype speed potion did that, and it killed me.

Some things I'm repeatedly thinking about...

The problem with changing console commands is that what if the game crashes while the potion is active? Or the player loads another save game? Or loads a new map?

If you interrupt the script before it finishes, then the cvar will never get set back to normal.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

Definetely needs one

But well done. Very nice. Some stroboscopic lights and some hardtech and the party can start.

I am having some kind of trouble with randomly disappearing textures. I could not determine when they disappear from my map, but they seem to do so randomly after behaving normally for a long time.

post-2023-0-56843500-1457856442_thumb.png

All of them are textures which were originally used for objects (e.g. a sack, or coals, or something like that).

If it matters, my map is getting rather large and complex (12400 brushes, 5200 patches, 4300 entities).

I am only working on one map, although I save my results under different, incrementally numbered filenames. (i.e. erasing01.map, erasing02.map, etc.)

12000 brushes? blimey.

The mission is getting fairly big. Spent around two hours walking around it looking for bugs and seeing if the gameplay was up to par. Still, it is not an impossibly large project. It has taken about six months total so far (over a one and a half year period).

Melan is such a noob, posting problems in the newbie questions - where is the veteran questions thread?

I may know a thing or two, but there are still elementary tasks which elude me. This thread is just fine for the purpose! .)

I just had a realisation, what version of DR are you running..? If its not 1.8.1 or 2.04pre2 then I strong suspect that a possible reason. 2.01/2.02/2.03 had numerous issues and I would not be surprised if this was another one related to that version.

If you are running 1.8.1/2.04pre2, drop me a PM with the following -

  • your DR and map files
  • the target details for your TDM/DR shortcuts

I will then attempt to see if there is any logical reason why your having the issue mentioned in the OP.

I am running v2.01. What does that mean?

Unfortunately, can't upload/download things until the 16th. As I wrote elsewhere, Win10 downloaded itself on my laptop, and blew through my monthly DL limit. Thanks, Microsoft! <_<

I've upated the post above as I should have included 2.01 in that list, ok so you have 3 options -

  1. go back to 1.8.1, but you will have to nuke your DR prefs folder, as 2.01-2.03 dont like 1.8.1 pref files.
  2. Pop down your local internet cafe, or use your smartphone then uninstall 2.01 and download and install 2.04 pre2.
  3. Maybe Orbweaver/Greebo will have a more precise answer to what's happening, and then comup with a simple fix.

And now that I think about point 3, I remember having to nuke and recreate my prefs when I have had issue's with DR in the past. So try that and see if that fixes the issue, be aware you will of course have to setup all the settings etc the way you like them. Its why I keep a backup of my DR prefs folder, C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\DarkRadiant.

@Bikerdude: Got and installed the 2.04pre2 version. Will see if the behaviour persists.

At least I am back at work. Hopefully this will be a reasonably straight line to the finish.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
