Uppercase entities?

I'm toying around with XreaL, an engine which uses a variant of darkradiant for it's editing and I've discovered that darkradiant converts entity names to lowercase before you place them, leading to uppercase entities not working. I've tracked this down to line 297-298 of plugins/ecalssmgr/Doom3EntityClass.cpp (I don't think XreaL has changed this file, but I guess the line numbers could be different). These lines read

std::string sName =
	boost::algorithm::to_lower_copy(tokeniser.nextToken());

My question is, could I just remove the to_lower_copy so I can use entities with uppercase characters, or will this mess something up elsewhere? Also, what's the point of making all entity names lowercase?

Thanks in advance,

Javagamer

Doom 3 treats some things as case insensitive (keys on entities for example). I don't know about the entity names but that's probably the reason.

Ah, that could be it. XreaL doesn't treat names case insensitive, and I personally prefer that. Still, I want to be sure taking out the to_lower_copy won't mess anything up.

Yes, DarkRadiant forces everything to lowercase because Doom 3 handles things that way; originally there were problems when (for example) a light shader would specify "lights/defaultPointLight" and DarkRadiant would consider this different to "lights/defaultpointlight".

If you remove the force-to-lowercase behaviour, you may encounter similar problems if an entity is referred to with different case names at different places, which is expected to work because Doom 3 is not case sensitive.

      Finally got my PC back from the shop after my SSD got corrupted a week ago and damaged my motherboard. Scary stuff, but thank goodness it happened right after two months of FM development instead of wiping all my work before I could release it. New SSD, repaired Motherboard and BIOS, and we're ready to start working on my second FM with some added version control in the cloud just to be safe!

      I've updated the articles for your FMs and your author category at the wiki. Your newer nickname (DeTeEff) now comes first, and the one in parentheses is your older nickname (Fieldmedic). Just to avoid confusing people who played your FMs years ago and remember your older nickname. I've added a wiki article for your latest FM, Who Watches the Watcher?, as part of my current updating efforts. Unless I overlooked something, you have five different FMs so far.

      I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.
