Builder Haunts?

Taking the ideas in this thread I've come up with this. THe idea is he's been cast out of the order, tied up in chains and drowned as execution, he has some ceromony peformed on him trapping his soul in his body so it'll never reach the Master Builder. He stays underwater quite a long time before the chains rust enough to break and allow him to move around again.

Let's be fair to him, all that nonsense would put anyone in a bad mood, so now he's back and he isn't happy...

Wow. Words cannot express how kickass that is.

[edit - If you want more constructive criticism than that, the 2nd wrapping of the chain on the right arm (its left) looks kind've like it's hanging in midair rather than wrapping closely around the skeletal arm. Don't know if that's intentional or not. Initial impression though is still just wow.]

[re-edit: Now that I look at it again, I see that's not the chain but a piece of cloth from the sleeve sticking out that I thought was chain. No problem then. :) ]

I was going to use the very same term. Kick. Ass. :o

These would definitely scare the shit out of me if I met them in a dark alley.

As far as a more constructive response, I'd like to see the chainmail hit with the same rust effect you used on the rest of the armour. And how would you feel about roughing up the edges of the sword a bit?

Yep, looks awesome!

Note to the team: Just my two cents here, but in releasing screenshots of DarkMod characters and such, we should make sure to leave a few surprises. Basically, don't post all the characters we come up with on our website. Especially with haunts and undead. Part of the thrill (and horror) of encountering characters like this is seeing them for the first time; or wondering what's around the next corner. Guards and civilians may not be such a big deal. But creatures, ghosts and woo, I feel, should be protected more. Feel free to post this one and others, I just think we should be careful is all ;)

Something about his cheek (shape), upper teeth/jaw (too long?) and eye sockets (not mean enough) bothered me a might. What do you think of these very slight changes? (Compare 1 vs. 2). I would've created an animated GIF to make seeing the changes easier, but I don't have the tools. I was just messing around with the 3rd one, but thought I'd post anyways.

Ahh, they're not really supposed to be cracks - although I did have a version with cracks and chunks taken out of the skull that I deleted. Those markings on #3 are supposed to be dark stains of some sort.

How would cracks or stains be done? I'm not sure, but I guess it would be like other stuff: with textures and normal maps? I'm no 3D model expert, though, so I'd leave that technical stuff to the likes of oDDity and others ;)

Thanks for taking this into account. I know that Spring considers background information as a waste of time, but I think that it will have a big impact on the modelers and the proof can be seen here. Knowing what a model went through to become what it is today, means that you can model the game world in a much more consistent way, then just treating each model as a model itself. And the haunt looks fantastic the way it is! :)

And I say fuck it - if you've got it, flaunt it.

This model is probably going to look significanty different in game anyway. It's going to be particularly difficult to convert this to low poly. THis is just a general concept of my ideas.

Can we actually use the term 'haunt'? It's as unique to Thief as hammers or mechanists, so I don't see how we can.

Not sure, i don't think it would be difficult, just means putting an animated particle in the area of the light. That pic looks nice though, took an excellent model and made it look even niftier. :)

Yes, easy with the right shader, model and particle FX. Will look better than T3 anyway due to D3's 1337ness.

Like that model, btw. :o:o:D

Yes, haunt as a verb is in the dictionary, but Haunt is used as a proper noun with a different meaning in Thief.

Hammer is in as a noun in the dictionary, and it seems we can't use that.

We can use hammer, but probably not hammerite. Well, I'm not a laywer so I can only guess as much as anybody else does.

Of course we can use th word hammer to describe a pole with a mallet on the end of it, but we can't have a religious order called The Hammers.

We can use the word haunt to descibe a ghost that frequents an area, but we can't have a class of creatures called The Haunts.

Your public and private thoughts on these issues seem to be at odds.

I think if we're not 100% certain we can using something (like zombies we can 100% definfitely use) then we should err on the side of caution and not use it.

Well. Then we have *A* haunt but not The Haunt. :)

And of course my postings in the public are a bit different. I know that people will start calling their Thief Garrett and all such, but we shouldn't publicy support that. In case of legal action it is very important that we always have the opinion that nobody should use copyrighted terms. If somebody does this it must be his own problem, but he should not have the impression as if we would suport this in any way. This is exactly where Npaster failed and other P2P clients get away with it. The developers knew that poeple will distribute copyrighted material with it, but the project can only be shut down if it can be proven that this was the intent. So even though we know that some people might change names in their stories, that should not be our target.

i am so euphoric to see new FMs keep coming out and I am keen to try it out in my leisure time, then suddenly my PC is spouting a couple of S.M.A.R.T errors...
tbf i cannot afford myself to miss my network emulator image file&progress, important ebooks, hyper-v checkpoint & hyper-v export and the precious thief & TDM gamesaves. Don't fall yourself into & lay your hands on crappy SSD

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?
