soldier model

hi, i'd like to contribute to the mod with this soldier model. included is a concept art so if you decide to adopt this model, and uvmap/texture it, the concept should give you an idea of what it's wearing.

about the model. the character wears a tabard, with mail hauberk underneath and mail chausses leggings. there is also a metallic arm brace. i based the helmet on those worn by high medieval period infantry. it is supposed to be grooved but i have no idea how to do that as my skills are limited:

thank you for your consideration

Thanks for the offer, but as you say, your skills are a bit limited for character modelling. I'd suggest starting out with simpler prop objects, like chairs, bowls, etc.

It's a decent start. Look up some tutorials on how to uv map etc and you could get much better. Unfortunately in its present state we cannot use the model as it has no uv, no rigging etc.

But thanks for the offer, I'm sure you'll continue to improve :)

thanks. but i've tried uv mapping once. i don't know why, but it just wouldn't work. either i pressed the wrong button or didn't know what i was doing. does anyone want to help me uv map it?

I*think* these guys have extremely full to-do lists, but I would think theres gotta be over a hundred tutorials on the net covering that issue.

I'm no modeler, but personally I'd like to see more detail on his clothing. For example in your concept on the left there's a split on the bottom of the armor as well as a tighter hold by the belt and skinnier top parts of the armor. This is with the judgment that the model looks most like the guy on the left.

However, I do love the idea you got here. I've wanted to get some of these heavy armored guys for a really long time but I'd have to be the one to do it, and I simply haven't gotten around to learning to model. I think you got some serious talent and you should be able to build on it to make some amazing work :)

/ end my artistic response :P

i see. it's going to be awhile until i finish then. do you guys have any suggestions on the model itself? where do i need to improve? add or subtract polygons?

It's basically missing a lot of detail (everywhere but the face). You would get a lot more feedback and help if you posted in a modeling forum, however. There are dozens out there, and you can choose one focused on your specific modeling software.

I've finally managed to log in to The Dark Mod Wiki. I'm back in the saddle and before the holidays start in full, I'll be adding a few new FM articles and doing other updates. Written in Stone is already done.

I like the new frob highlight but it would nice if it was less "flickery" while moving over objects (especially barred metal doors).
