Hey Guys,

Saw some references to your project on TTLG. I do want to help, but I also want to be realistic and honest upfront, so I don't promise anything I can't deliver on.

I'm a first year CS Major right now, somewhere in between beginner-intermediate in my C/C++ skills. Made the jump into programming by modding for the Fallout & Gothic Series, some of my favorite RPGs. So I do know a bit about Game Scripting as well. Hope to get a career in the game industry, so I'd like to work on a few projects to build my skills in relevant areas. So, I wouldn't mind helping out here.

One thing, I don't have a huge amount of free-time, my college schedule, work, and other RL commitments do keep me quite busy. As such, I don't have time to be a full team-member right now.

However, if you guys are willing to consider it, would you mind having someone on the team who can contribute code on a part-time basis, patching reported bugs, feature additions, etc? If so, I think with my levels of free time and programming experience, that would be great :).

I would really love to help, just for the sake of boosting my own skills and working on a project that stirs my interest like this one. Let me know.

I'm sure we can use another helping hand, even if it's not full-time.

At this point the code is pretty much in freeze state, and all the team is working towards the first release. After that will have happened, there will be an influx of bug reports needing to be dealt with. During that phase, I guess your job could be to pick up certain bugs which seem appealing to you and figure them out. This is probably the quickest way to learn about how our game code is organised, so this might be a possible setup for you and for the team.

As a first step, you might want to follow the guide to installing and compiling the Doom 3 SDK in the mod programming subsection of the www.doom3world.org forum. The best tool I've found for this is the

Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition (I think it's still a free download!).

Hi,

I got Visual Studio 2008 free as part of an academic program through my college :D, so I will go through that and have a look. I'm sure it won't be too much hassle too compile, but I will report if I have difficulties. I'll keep you updated :).

Yup, it builds fine in Debug mode. Will grab the Dark Radiant source, then let me know what's next.

EDIT: All set with DarkRadiant and the Doom 3 SDK. Never played Doom 3 before, borrowing it from a friend just to work on this, so I'm spending some time perusing the code provided in the SDK. Don't want to be that guy, but that read is a pain.

      Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

      Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

      I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
      Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

      Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

      Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
