My rig:

Nintendo Switch OLED running

Linux. This is Linux 64 bit version with box64. Game is hovering around 30fps with mix of low and medium settings.

I am almost certain we can run this even more natively and with better results but its great already. Next stop is Android port of idTech4.

I would post pictures but they are too big. Come to discord to see them if you really want lol.

Only other upgrade for me lately was a 52" 4k tv for the gaming machine :).

got it for cheap from a guy who was moving in with his fiance.

supports HD as well and it is a 144hz tv so quite good though the size is a bit of a problem as it actually takes up the the entire length of my adjustable gaming desk meaning i had to place the PC on the floor which im not happy about as it draws in dirt like you wouldnt believe 😂 (my poor vacum cleaner is getting a workout!!!).

i might upgrade the mainboard + cpu and ram to a ryzen 5800x3d and ddr4 as i seen how the 3070 does in my buddies PC which is a ryzen 3900x in a asrock taichi mainboard and his pc actually gives the 3070 enough of a boost that i will consider it (well i kinda did build it for him though he payed for the components for it). hees also using a 3070 now after we tried with mine. though my gamer will have the 2080 ti instead of the 3070 i kinda suspect it wont do any worse than the 3070 performance wise especially not in 4k which it allready handles pretty well with my old cpu/mainboard.

the 2080 ti is pcie 3.0 though whereas the 3070 is pcie 4.0 so i might try taking it to him to test in his pc before i make a deciscion.

a 12 gb 3060 🙄 would have made more sense putting that in a 3070 or even the ti model but nooo we cant have mid range cards even attempt to outdo our top end 😂. sad thing is it wont... it only gives a boost at 4k resolutions and nowhere near what a 3080 can achive sigh.

Yeah I thought later that amd had a better card for me (I think it was a 6600xt) at that moment, but it had 8gb and I thought 12gb was more future proof. Still, it's a good card and I use cuda sometimes.

Btw. The 2 components at the bottom (gpu and psu) were moved from my old system, so they're not new. Bought the gpu a year ago.

the biggest problem with adding 12gb to the 3060 is mostly that the card cannot handle 4k in all but older titles and even with those it has problems 🙄, the 3070 does have the muscle for stutter free gaming in 4k but is limited by vram. There are no 3070 cards besides user modified ones with more than 8gb, the user modified 16 gb version showed that it made a big difference in 4k but not so much in lower resolutions.

the RX6600XT is mostly equal to the 3060 perfomance wise the 8gb 3060TI is a much better card than the 12 gb 3060.

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-RTX-3060-Ti-vs-Nvidia-RTX-3060/4090vs4105

unfortunatly the same can not be said about the ti model of the 3070 which at best is only about 5% faster than the standard 3070 and still only has 8gb vram 🤬

So, how does it perform with Dark Mod? :)

mine does quite ok though with some stuttering in 4k if i crank everything to 11 :) yeah even in darkmod it shows if you try to go beyond vram limitations. still it fluctuates between 70 an 140 fps in some of the heavier maps so it is definatly playable but the stuttering is annoying. lowering some stuff to keep it within vram bounds helps a lot and fps wise you also gain some. still as it shows the card is capable of 4k but suffers due to the lack of vram. had they only offered a 12gb version of it it would have been enough as my 2080 ti has ony 11gb but can still keep up in 4k. the cards are pretty alike in performance with the 3070 winning by a hair in 2k and lower resolutions, but loosing in 4k by quite a bit.

It performs quite well. I can easilly put shadow maps on high and it performs fine. I only use 1080p though. Loading tdm and missions is also like 3 times faster. Loading was more an issue in other games, like Subnautica for example, that was always a bit of a chore. Not anymore now.

I'm on 1080p as well, but, I bought a 144 Hz monitor some time ago (which I only can highly recommend, the higher framerate makes for much more smoother movement, and a much more realistic looking game). My RTX 3060 Ti handles TDM very well with maximum details in almost everything (except for antialiasing, which is a HUGE hog in this game...).

Mine is a 100hz ultrawide asus.

Snd yeah it does make a difference though nut with the stuttering which might be the wrong word, its more like texture pop in but since darkmod is not streamed like some engines it is different.

I found that there is a huge performance drop going from 8x to 16x. So I keep it on 8x.

Do you have Object Details (LOD) setting set to Very High ? It should be on Very High except if your system cannot handle that.

Yep. Same here. 8x is more than enough anyway IMO.

To me 8x is more than enough, if you play at 1440p IMO 2x is enough and at 4k there's no need for it.

This game uses old school MSAA that is not a post-process AA system, like most modern games now use.  In simple terms, MSAA is a faster super-sampling system, instead of super sampling the entire image (rendering at higher res and down sampling) and so destroy performance, MSAA instead uses the geometry edges, to only give more pixels to 3D models borders and nothing else, so is way faster than real SSAA while being able to remove a large amount of stair-steping artifacts, but there's a issue with it, the reason MSAA as been deprecated, is because it will not anti-aliase transparencies and textures and pretty much all modern games, is all about shaders and textures.

IMO for those wanting more performance and still wanting some aliasing mitigation, disabling MSAA and instead forcing a post-process AA like SMAA or others, though reshade, is the better curse of action.

Btw almost forgot, the reason MSAA is so performance intensive on this game, is because it does real time lighting and pixel shading, per pixel, every frame, so the more frames you give it, the more pixels you give it, the heavier the lighting becomes and MSAA increases pixel count.

Wow 16X AA is nuts!

Have any of you looked up how MSAA actually works to see what you're asking your GPU to do?

Quote

"16x AA" refers to 16x Multisample Anti-Aliasing (MSAA), which is a technique in computer graphics where a scene is rendered multiple times at slightly different pixel positions, taking 16 samples per pixel, and then blending those samples together to smooth out jagged edges, resulting in a cleaner image with significantly less aliasing; essentially, the higher the "x" value, the more samples are taken per pixel, leading to a smoother appearance, but also potentially impacting performance more significantly

Not unless it sets that when setting everything else to the highest setting ?, and sorry about the typos i was writing from my phone 😂

perhaps, going to toy a bit with the settings :) in other games it probably wont work as the texture requirements exceed avaliable vram by quite a lot (horizon zero dawn for one) only lowering vram gobbling monsters work there.

yeah allways wondered about the antialiasing in the idtech 4 engine 16x is quite a drain while anisotrophy only goes to 8x. looks like some goofup because it is usually 16x aniso and 8x antialiasing as max.

Anisotrophy setting goes to 16x. I have always set it to 16x with minimal impact on performance. Or do you mean other idtech4 games?

I remember that in Doom 3 you could not set antialiasing to 16x. I could only use the console to do that. Now I know why.

Posted

so it was fixed for darkmod thats good :) i remember it being rather confusing atleast when using a thirdparty gui like 6thvenoms where it could indeed be set to 16x without the console.

Posted

hmm well object lod did indeed fix it. though im not sure if darkmod uses any textures with insane sizes like some engines today do ? so it might not be the best example for triggering a vram shortage.

hmm actually it was the other way around, i just tried the old doom3 and i can set aliasing to 16 via menu but aniso only goes to 8. looks like the old code had a rather weird bug.

I moved from Manjaro Linux (rolling release) to Linux Mint (LTS). One of the reasons was that I found the updates a bit too often and long. But now on Mint I get updates every day, although they're usually small updates.

I'd like to track my level design progress a bit more often now, so I'm using the feed in my profile here.
I've been working intensively on Springheel's YouTube course over the past few days. I'm currently up to lesson 8. There is so much information that needs to be processed and practiced.
I have started to create my own house. As I don't have the imagination to create a good floor plan, I grabbed a floor plan generator from Watabou and experimented with it. I chose a floor plan that I will modify slightly, but at least I now have an initial idea.
I used two guards as a measuring tape: The rooms are two guards high. It turned out that I can simply double the number of boxes in DarkRadiant in grid size 8 that are drawn in the floor plan.
I practiced the simplest things on the floor plan first. Drawing walls, cutting walls, inserting doors, cutting out frames, creating VisPortals, furnishing rooms.
I have had my first success in creating a book. Creating a book was easier than I thought. I have a few ideas with books. The level I'm creating will be more or less a chill level, just for me, where I'll try out a few things. I don't have an idea for my own mission yet. I want to start small first.
For the cellar, I wanted to have a second entrance, which should be on the outside. I'm fascinated by these basement doors from the USA, I think they're called Bilco basement doors. They are very unusual in Germany, but this type of access is sometimes used for deliveries to restaurants etc., where barrels can be rolled or lifted into the cellar.
I used two Hatch Doors, but they got completely disoriented after turning. I have since got them reasonably tamed. It's not perfect, but it's acceptable.
In the cellar today I experimented with a trap door that leads to a shaft system. The rooms aren't practically finished yet, but I want to continue working on the floor plan for now. I'll be starting on the upper floor very soon.

On a lighter note, thanks to my cat-like reflexes, my superior puzzle skills and my perfect memory, I was able to beat the remastered version of "Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation" in a new superhuman record time of 23 h : 35 m, worship me!
