probably going to have to live with it for a while but surveys show most people still game at 1080p so my ultrawide is somewhat nice since it is a mix of 2k and 4k resolutions. still in some games it can be a bit weird as there are a lot of games who newer took ultrawide into account and you get letterboxing as a result.

the great thing with the ultrawide is it only needs enough muscle to run 2k while still getting the 4k feel.

so for the 3070 it was actually a good call hooking it up with the ultrawide, i use the 2080 ti for my 4k tv where it runs wery well indeed. So far the only game where i had to make some drastic changes was alan wake 2 where im using the framegen mod, otherwise it does run but fps is in the 20's with that game in 4k. with framegen i can get it to 60 fps and a bit beyond but latency does show a bit at times.

Wooo! CPU Upgrade time.

I got a gift-card from work so I figured I would get my PC ready for Win11 ( yuck :( )

( So I can compile TDM on a supported MSVC version :) ).

( Also, new games are starting to require AVX2, my old AVX v1 i7-3770 can't do that :(  )

I found a deal on a socket LGA 1700 platform. Now my setup is 3yrs old rather than 14 ( gulp ).

CPU i3-12100F

16GB DDR4

Geforce RTX 2060

M.2 NVME

Changing from i7-3770S to i3-12100F has increased performance in "Scroll of Remembrance"

OLD Linux i7 = 72 FPS,  NEW Linux i3 = 137 FPS

OLD Win10 i7 = 50 FPS, NEW Win10 i3 = 90 FPS

currently looking to upgrade my aging x99 platform with a ryzen 3900x and an asrock taichi board if i can get my hands on one for a reasonable price.

the old x99 isnt as bad as many believe, it also supports AVX2 and the cpu's range from 6 cores to 10.

it's ipc is lower than more modern examples but since i game at 4k i hardly ever ran into trouble because of that. gaming wise they are not the fastest but for raw compute power they still kick enough bucket so ill probably retire it for building purposes.

lol, I didn't realize we have rival platforms:

I stuck with Intel because AMD's prices have gone up to crazy town even on used systems since the platform holds it's value longer with X3D and folks are scared of getting damaged 13th \ 14th gen processors due to the ring bus hardware failures.

Also, I figured that there might be fewer driver issues on initial boot.

I swapped out the board+cpu+ram and both Windows and Linux had no big complaints.

Only pain point was enrolling the Nvidia driver into MOK for secure boot compatibility.

I ran:
sudo update-secureboot-policy --enroll-key

but my MSI motherboard couldn't find the certificate ( it wouldn't let me browse to the right path /var/lib/shim-signed/mok/MOK.der )

so I had to copy it to one of my Windows NTFS drives where the MOK utility could easily find it

and then Nvidia was happy running under secure boot.

Basically your processor has very similar gaming performance to mine but wildly better productivity performance.

I wonder if any newer titles with better multi-core support reverse the gaming situation between our chips?

Does having more threads give UE5 Nanite powered titles a bigger boost than good IPC ?

currently no :) IPC is still the king in gaming allthough some games have started using multiple cores they are still in the minority. Yeah also seing vastly inflated used prices here in europe though it is still possible to make a bargain but you need to look long and hard sometimes.

yeah the ol 6950x is still a powerhouse for productivity but is starting to show its shortcommings in games.

if you can live with the slightly older AM4 socket model the ryzen 3900x is still a monster of a cpu and it can be picked up used for a bargain if lucky. sometimes you can even get a bundle mainboard / cpu but take care and allways read reviews of said mobo as some of the boards behave less than stellar.

300 euro on the german kleinanzeigen nets me a 3900x plus an asus B550F board plus 32 gb ram and included cooler. the B550F is amd's more mainstream chip but it performs pretty well has tons of feature and the only downside is a lackluster 4x2 VRM but it handles the 3900x without problems.

the 3900x is also more than double as fast as my 6950x and has 2 cores more :)

heres the one im after :) this one without the cpu though.

https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/-ovp-asrock-taichi-am4-amd-x570-atx-ddr4-sdram-motherboard/3028342755-225-4892

and here is a bargain -> https://www.kleinanzeigen.de/s-anzeige/as-rock-x570-phantom-gaming-itx-tb3-mainboard-bundel/3026633093-225-7963

the ryzen 5600 is a quite good cpu despite being one of the more mainstream models.

the board is insanely good i bought one for my chum and it rips through everything with his 3900x like wet tissue paper 😂

btw the board can be flashed to support the 5900X3D models which offers some of the best gaming performance. the X3D models arent the best overclockers though because they use chiplets.

EDIT: sorry it is AMD's gfx cards that use chiplets the x3d models use a form of stacked geometry with the cache mem near the top instead of at the bottom. newer versions corrected that but sadly no version from the AM4 lineup.

recently 4k gaming has dropped somewhat because the prices are so inflated and the cards that are able to handle it are allmost impossible to get your hands on unless you want to pay double or tripple the MSRP.

the mainstream cards can handle 2K in most newer games and the AMD midrange alternative 9070 / XT stock was bought up by scalpers and is now selling for prices that would make your hair stand.

resellers are pulling in more stock but these wont sell for anywhere near MSRP.

the problem here being that AMD cant force them since they dont make there own 9070 / XT models so retailers can score whatever premium they want.

the cheapest way to get your hands on one atm is buying prebuilds (yeah yuck....) but thats how things stand.

edit: the x99 platform actually has cpu's with up to 24 cores and 48 threads (xeon) but they are usually clocked pretty low (2 ghz range) and most of them can not be overclocked at all.

where this might come in handy would be build servers where the clock speed does not matter that much.

should probably equip it with plenty of ram though 😉.

dont need anything special for gfx either as most servers only use the screen for the initial setup patching etc.

damn i wish i was still able to have a payed job 😂 im still on the AM4 but recently upgraded it with an 5800x3d so besides the gfx card being some generations old im pretty happy with it. performance isnt to bad the crysis remaster runs at the highest setting on my 2080 ti with granted a not so stellar 35 fps in 4K but it is rock stable and newer drops below 32 fps no matter what action is on the screen (plays pretty fluid to).

it also handles alan wake 2 with high in gfx and medium in raytracing without any hiccups.

only oddity i have had with the ryzen was occasional stuttering which turned out to be a bug in microsofts thread handler which they recently patched. it has been running great since 😄

Am4 is still a very capable platform, and the 2080Ti/11GB is nothing to be sniffed at, especially in the ridiculous day and age of overpriced cards with only 8GB vram

for its age i will agree its not a bad card by a long shot 😊 i can sure live with it as it is now but at some point ill probably get a 9070 xt to replace it. not that im going to ditch it, it would still work great in my other machine which has one of the "yuck" 8gb rtx 3070 cards 😂. not that its a bad card but anything above 1440 res and the 2080 ti overtakes it.

in more modern titles like indiana jones and the great circle it gets splattered completely because the game uses a ton of texture memory. i can play it with the 3070 but i have to lower texture res to the lowest setting or the game will crash it uses that much vram 😂 and the 2080 ti still wins.

i use an ultrawide asus 144hz monitor on that one so its a mix between 4k and 1440. biggest problem is that the 2080 ti can only do 60hz on the hdmi port on 4k but the monitor does have displayports which supports a higher framerate than the hdmi port does (why on earth they decided to use the old hdmi standard on the 2080 ti baffles me to no end).

the 9070 xt will probably be the last upgrade in this life, im getting to old for the space race 😅 and finances are limited.

Frankly, HDMI is more of a compatibility crutch anyway. Only the really cheap office monitors come without displayport these days.

I once tryed DP a few months ago and my bios would beep always because it didn't recognise the monitor on startup but only after Windows reboot, which was really annoying so I switched back to hdmi.

Not sure exactly why but dp monitors have been historically hard to find in denmark for the normal consumer, the few i seen were actually usually only sold as office equipment 😂.

cant say i ever had any problems with it but i guess some incompatibillity does happen (or the cable is faulty).

right now i have 2 monitors which are DP capable one is a really old hp monitor 1080 res which i got from office when they decided to upgrade equipment. the other is my asus ultrawide.

my 4k tv does not have DP unfortunatly but i guess you need a pretty expensive one to get that (LG 55").

The preliminary working titles for the missions in my now-in-development Partners in Crime series:
      - Partners in Crime 1: A Mere Trinket
      - Partners in Crime 2: Beacon Burglary
      - Partners in Crime 3: In the Bleak Midwinter
      - Partners in Crime 4 (5 ?): Fishy Dealings
      - Partners in Crime 5 (4 ?): A Thief in the Night

No title stealing, please.  In return, I promise to finish these. I do stress the preliminary part. Beyond the broad strokes storyline, plot, objectives, briefings and the (currently built) layouts of these FMs, I haven't fully decided about every single detail yet, including the exact order of the missions (4 and 5 might switch places, with the story adjusted accordingly). I want the overall plot to be plotted out a bit in advance and not suffer too much from inserting prequels later. I also prefer to let my FM building fill out part of the details naturally.

Currently working on the second FM, and once I do enough work on the current prototype, I'll work on the first one, until I get that one released. Then complete the second one, get that one ready for release (hopefully) a few months later, and so on. I want most of the early missions to be fairly small and confined, and get a bit bigger as I grow more confident in my FM making skills.

Though there is an overarching storyline to this series, the missions themselves are mostly episodic in nature. They factor into the character development of the two main characters I'll have in the series, but it's the kind of continuity where the mission's own plot and story wouldn't depend on it.
