Darkmod: Inspiration thread

You could do it if it was a relatively sparse exterior set, perhaps as a "make your way into the city" kind of multi-level climbing puzzle. What you couldn't do is an entire city explored with this kind of detail and openness. BUT you could do the exterior and the city interior with some forethought and planning.

Right now I'm digging the art direction of this Russian movie Hard to be a God.

It's medieval and it's billed as possibly the filthiest movie, if not ever, of at least the last 10 years ... filthy in terms of sheer dirt, grime, and muck.

What better inspiration for our world could there be? :P

Watched only the first 5 minutes so far.

Walking through such streets with ancient houses as a thief with the mud squashing noticeably between your toes.

Paint your face with dirt, so at least you can not be spotted that easily.

That would make fine mission!

Since Bridgeport and other TDM-verse cities and towns seem to have quite a few bridges, here are some links to real world medieval fortified bridges and toll bridges that are still standing today:

I had no idea there's a new adaptation of that novel. :)

And some old-timey industrial inspirations from my homeland...

The old hydroelectric powerplant near Kežmarok, under the Tatras. Founded in 1910, it's still in full operation today, even with some of the original Austro-Hungarian era machinery:

Some of my own photos of the old red brick factory halls of the Solivary salt processing plant in Prešov:

More to come. I've posted plenty of these over at ttlg.com, usually my own photos. I'll cover some medieval and early modern housing next time.

Speaking of aesthetically inspirational movies, I also like a French classic called Le Retour de Martin Guerre (The Return of Martin Guerre). Really captures the look, lifestyle, and ways of thinking of a medieval village.

Oh, also The Devil's Whore. That one had such good imagery I actually took a ton of screenshots of the movie, which I rarely do.

Edit: I'd be interested in seeing some medieval movies made into FMs -- Name of the Rose, Hard to be a God, Excalibur, the two I mentioned here, etc -- as long as there's still some good gameplay. Some of them have really good stories.

I like the colourfulness of a lot of the clothing. It always annoys me when many contemporary films equate medieval clothing with literally everyone wearing apparel made from drab, sack-like cloth. I blame the "gritty realism" crowd. Misplaced realism, more like...

Another movie on the same topic but different - in cooperation between Germany and USSR, although the latter had little to do in the end with the film's creation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GiefHPD7HY (has english subititles in the caption)

Also, the book is good from what I've hear and there's even a Russian video game which I tried, I thought was a nice RPG as well. Even if mostly ignored in 2005.

The movie looks more like Dune but I thought it was still cool in case anyone wants inspiration for Arabic landscapes (I'm not sure the book actually had these steepes as it's setting but whatever ^_^ ).

However, arguably the movie you sent is more in line with the original material of the book - i.e. a harsh, unforgiving and barbaric system under a Medieval Theocratic dictatorship as a setting.

"I really perceive that vanity about which most men merely prate — the vanity of the human or temporal life. I live continually in a reverie of the future. I have no faith in human perfectibility. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active — not more happy — nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. The result will never vary — and to suppose that it will, is to suppose that the foregone man has lived in vain — that the foregone time is but the rudiment of the future — that the myriads who have perished have not been upon equal footing with ourselves — nor are we with our posterity. I cannot agree to lose sight of man the individual, in man the mass."...

As for subtitles, I just ripped it from YouTube via the downloader app and got the subtitles from a google search.

Last night I did a search for movies and tv shows set in the medieval period from any country. Will report back my favorites after watching some.

Blimey, what mission is that from? the sight distances/line are insane :-)

Guess twice!

Both are good guesses.

Using Google's reverse image search, however, is unsportsmanlike.

It takes the challenge and fun out of guessing.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
