DarkRadiant.exe is not a valid Win32 application

Recommended Posts

I'm using WinXP Pro 32-bit SP3 on a single-core system... So I guess that's all the information that's required?

(and yes, I did install the "VC++ 2012 Redistributable Package")

I suppose it could be that there's some mix-up with these builds and despite saying x86 it's actually not the case, but I've read things here and there that lead me to believe that this level of hardware is purposefully being neglected, due purely to convenience for the developers.

So I'd just like to encourage and plead you guys to consider spending that little extra time to continue supporting this level of hardware because it's hardly a Tandy just yet, I mean it's not like some awesome map couldn't be made on such a system, right? Hopefully we don't honestly believe that, because that would be disturbing.

I'd also like to add that The Dark Mod itself works on this system, the pre-release 1.8.1 builds work on this system, and considering some of the features include support for Quake 3 Arena and XreaL engines, it seems only natural that DarkRadiant would work too.

Thanks for your time.

Not that I don't feel for your situation, but I feel it's worth noting that even Microsoft don't support XP anymore, and they'd even extended the support for it by a fair margin. Oct 2001 to April 2014.. is a long time.. Windows 7 won't reach end of extended support until 2020, and an OEM copy can be found cheaply, usually. I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but the software and hardware industries move along at a fairly brisk pace, and eventually it just isn't worth supporting the pocket calculators anymore.

It's not a hardware issue, it's purely WinXP-related and it's because I've been switching to Visual Studio 2012. While it's technically possible to build WinXP-compatible binaries, it requires the entire GTK stack and the other third-party binaries to be targetted for it as well (requires adjusting all those VC++ projects), and that's more than I'm ready to invest. Maybe someone else wants to go through that.

At this point, I can only suggest to upgrade (MS dropped WinXP this year as well, but I guess you know that) or to keep using DarkRadiant 1.8.0.

Windows XP, I feel for you man, it was a decent OS back in the day, but it's time to move on. Early next year the preview build for Windows 9 is going to be out, you'll be 4 OS generations behind.

Although not everyone can afford to upgrade their computer along with new hardware, it's the reality of the computer world. Our devs are very overworked already, having to support Windows XP will be too much on a plate already over full with stuff.

I always assumed I'd taste like boot leather.

a Windows 7 OEM copy can be found cheaply,

And if you hunt around online for a student upgrade copy it will be even cheaper. I paid £46 for my copy of win7 pro upgrade and its easy enough to install and activate an upgrade on a blank hard drive, just do a google search.

No need to feel sorry for me, I almost never have problems like this, but thanks for the honest replies, I completely understand the time constraints and extra effort it would involve. I just figured since we're talking about idTech4, which is now 10 years old, some extra consideration might be taken to align everything, both the project itself and all tools involved for its development, with the relevant hardware and operating system.

So here's hoping Greebo gets some free time in the near future. Perhaps in the meantime, is there a place to find help on how one might compile an XP 32 compatible build of DR, or perhaps someone might be kind enough to type up some information about compiling it? I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one who would deeply appreciate it.

  • 1 year later...

Well basically, if you want it done, you'll have to do it yourself, the team doesn't have the manpower or time to support XP any longer, not even the maker of the OS supports it anymore.

Does anyone actually use the Normalise button in the Surface inspector? Even after looking at the code I'm not quite sure what it's for.

Turns out my 15th anniversary mission idea has already been done once or twice before! I've been beaten to the punch once again, but I suppose that's to be expected when there's over 170 FMs out there, eh? I'm not complaining though, I love learning new tricks and taking inspiration from past FMs. Best of luck on your own fan missions!

I wanna play Doom 3, but fhDoom has much better features than dhewm3, yet fhDoom is old, outdated and probably not supported. Damn!
Makes me think that TDM engine for Doom 3 itself would actually be perfect.

Maybe a bit of advice ? In the FM series I'm preparing, the two main characters have the given names Toby and Agnes (it's the protagonist and deuteragonist, respectively), I've been toying with the idea of giving them family names as well, since many of the FM series have named protagonists who have surnames. Toby's from a family who were usually farriers, though he eventually wound up working as a cobbler (this serves as a daylight "front" for his night time thieving). Would it make sense if the man's popularly accepted family name was Farrier ? It's an existing, though less common English surname, and it directly refers to the profession practiced by his relatives. Your suggestions ?

Looks like the "Reverse April Fools" releases were too well hidden. Darkfate still hasn't acknowledge all the new releases. Did you play any of the new April Fools missions?
