  1. i once tried to turn off my speakers with the mouse cursor:D(the button is just next to the monitor)

Heh, thats funny - my brother found himself rakeing the mouse downwards in an effort to drag the cursor down to the off button on the tower of the computer, which was sitting on the floor. He did it twice before he realised what he was trying to do.

I daresay if the cursor moved out of the monitor and down to the computer he wouldn't have noticed anything amiss for at least a few seconds.

Sometimes you just get into one of those zones...

  2. Fish, I hope you don't mean "canned" objectives as in they are all of a various type, just renamed.

ConVict (Conditions for Victory) is the most flexible objective system I've ever seen. You can pretty much do anything with it. I've made posts about it in the design forum.

  3. I don't understand why people are talking about a real-time doppler effect for the arrow swoosh. Whatever way they used in T2 worked just fine (which was before games were doing real-time doppler effects). It all happens so fast, you're never going to realise it's a real-time doppler effect.

Arrow gets fired, you hear whoosh in almost the same instant or the very next, that's all that happens.

  4. The way T2 did it had to have been simple, and it worked there, so why would we need something complex like a real doppler effect? Just during the collision test, maybe if it hits the bounding box but not the player model, play the whooshing sound.

Which should work because the bb is bigger than the player model, and testing for bb collisions is really fast.

    Or something like that.

  5. Geez... man I never would have guessed it from your writing. Damn.

Well, welcome to teenage-hood. And pimples and growth pains and voice breaking and sexual frustration and all that other fun stuff.

    Happy Birthday :)

  6. So yes, anyway, taking things back. I don't want the mouth to open upon seeing you. I think the face should stay as you've drawn it. It'd be cool, cause they'd be scarey to look at even when sitting there in the dark, de-activated. It would be very ominous...

Not related to the art - the noise they make when they see you should be something really wierd and original. Not a scream, even a mechanical one, that's too predictable and feel's cliched. Like how they replaced the laughing of the Haunts in T3 with a screech. Scarey, but not original. The "...hoooooooooohhhhh..." drawing in of breath from T2 was much scarier, because it was still scarey, but also wierd. Humans are naturally afraid of what they don't understand. And it gives a unique feeling and character to the monster.

  7. Tell me about it. You never got to respond to my female guards idea because the thread was locked instantly without even allowing a discussion of wether it could be for the first milestone or not.

No need to lock threads, just enforce a little whip cracking in the way of edited threads when people dont' follow procedure.

I'm gonna make a new thread about a proposed procedure.

  8. You need to use XCOPY.

To make a bat file, just make a .txt file and save it as .bat

Then put it in your startup.

    The only thing you need to enter into this batch file is;

    xcopy path1\ path2\ /e

where path1\ is the source, and path2\ is the destination, so

    xcopy C:\Doom3\maps C:\maps_backup\ /e

would copy all the stuff from maps folder (including sub directories) to the maps_backup folder. Make sure you include the \ on the end of the path name.

The /e tells it to copy everything including subdirectories.

  9. I think vertex animation is what's happening all the time in the game. The term vertex animation as I know it is just a way of animating. It's instead of mesh animation where you store a new mesh for every frame in the animation.

  10. Well oDD, you can call it "eating anything", but the rest of us call it "having diverse taste".

Your analogy for fast food isn't appropriate. I wouldn't say I can't get enough of FPSs, its just that there are a few good ones out there. Doom 3 isn't the best of them by far, but it has its good qualities.

Look at it this way - me and my 2 brothers play Thievery UT, its the most adrenalin inducing and exciting game we can ever play, for all the reasons we play Thief, except to the power of 25 since its involving real humans as guards and Thieves.

We also play Serious Sam 2 on co-op. It would seem to be another "simple FPS" but its just excecuted so flawlessly and it keeps the action coming "OMG the horizon is crawling with a wave of enemies again!" and throws in some really cool unique bits, like the part where you start at the top of the tower and the floors explode one by one at intervals, so you fall down a floor at a time in a pile of rubble, or the time you're all in a HUGE tube with gravity pulling outwards, so you're all running around the walls of it, its really trippy.

Serious Sam 2 is exciting and fun, probably not as much as Theivery UT, but is exciting in a way that Thievery UT could never be, because it's different.

And most people like variety in their lives.

  11. ...why wouldn't the mage simply blow up all the musketeers by creating little sparks of fire in the powder horns?
That'd be cool. :) And a reason to NOT have them, cause they're usless against magic. Kind of like how guns are useless in the matrix when you're fighting one on one because you could just spend all day dodging each others bullets, so it makes it worth getting in there and fighting hand to hand.
  12. ...and yet (continuing on from my last post) I'm still openminded to these things, and Fingernail made it sound fun.

But once it gets used, everyone will use it, and it won't be a surprise anymore. We'd just have to trust FM authors to use it very sparingly.

No doubt we'd develop another "I don't play X" missions group of players, where they won't touch a mission that has guns in it, much like some dont like undead missions.
