  1. Or rather you should try to work those unforseen incidents into the play somehow. "O! for a muse of fire, that would ascend the brightest heaven of invention!" *pupil bursts into flame and screams* "Tut, man, one fire burns out another’s burning, One pain is lessened by another’s anguish."

  2. I once managed to set myself alight with some deodorant and a lighter - accidentally!

Also a few months ago I stood too close to a heater and my Crocs shoes melted into my feet, which I didn't realise was happening until I smelt them smelting.

  3. I have two homes - my weekday home is the nicest place on earth in countryside that looks like Hobbitton full of lovely people but is intensly boring. My weekend home is in an old medieval town of 9k people which isn't boring but that's because you're constantly in a scrap with some drunken chavs.

I prefer the second one to tell you the truth.

  4. A religious country where abortion is illegal and the education system is run by the Catholic church? No thanks.
It's a secular state, unlike Britain. It's also apparently the happiest place in Europe.

If you're looking for some perfect country, some tir na nog where the sun is always shining, there's no crime, and the state is atheist and yet utterly benign, you're not going to find it.

  5. The Republic of Ireland is the best place in the world to live at the moment. It's rich, it doesn't do wars, the people are kind, and it's in Europe. So if you want to live somewhere nice, move there. Just don't confuse it with Northern Ireland which isn't so nice.

  6. Actually I'd be more likely to be on the Viking or the Norman side back then. My mother's from Sheffield and I'm descended from the 1st Marquess of Crewe on my Father's side. Also I'm tall and light while the Welsh tend to be shorter and darker.

  7. It's not often that I get to do any video game journalism for my magazine, but this game was the perfect excuse. :)

Here's a word-by-word translation of my article. Note that this magazine is mostly read by Welsh speakers who like history, but don't play computer games!

Soon there will be an oppertunity to change the course of Welsh history with the release of a game which re-creates the war of Llywelyn our last Prince against the English.

The large company Sega has announced that part of its next game in the world-famous series Total War will be set during the rebellion of the Welsh Princes.

The game will being in 1258, the year when Llywelyn ap Gruffudd announced that he was the leader of Wales, and it will even contain some Welsh.

The last game involved England and Scotland, but Wales was not available.

"It wasn't people on the team in the UK who had asked to be able to control the army of Wales, but people in our office down in Australia," said Mark Sutherns from Creative Assembly.

"There are two or three Welsh people working there and they wanted the ability to play as Wales in the next game.

"The team has been developing the game for two years now and a lot of research has happened in that time.

"We don't need to consult with historians usually because we employ people who already take an interest in the history of the period.

"Despite that we often ask for advice from experts about the battles of the Middle Adges."

Y game will allow the player to control 22 different types of warriors on the battlefield, including raiders from Gwent and horsemen from Mathrafal.

Many of the names in the game will be in Welsh, including Rhyfelwyr instead of Warriors, Saethwyr instead of Archers, and Magnelwyr instead of Artillerymen.

Mark Sutherns admits that Wales will be at a disadvantage at the start of the game, but that's because of historical reality.

"Even thought Wales are quite weak they have the ability to call upon a number of supporters to join with the cause, faster than the other countries.

"Llywelyn managed to get the whole country behind him, unlike England, so hopefully the balance will be correct.

"The Welsh were famous at the time for their archery skills, and they will have the best archers in the game. Their main disadvantage will be their light armour which makes illing them easier.

"The Welsh will have to use clever strategies to counter the armoured juggernaut of England."

Like in the other Total War games the player will have to use diplomacy and even strategic marrying, as well as war.

But the game will not force the player to conform with history. It gives Llywelyn the chance to defeat the English in Wales or even conquer the entire island... and avoid a visit to Cilmeri.

"The Welsh can conquer land beyond the boundaries of their country and claim England, Scotland, Irealnd and the land of the Vikings for themselves," said Mark Sutherns.

"We have made sure the game is historically accurate, but not so historical that it will restrict what the player can do. It's more fun if the player can go against the tide of history.

"The game gives the player a chance to ask some of those 'what if?' questions that are so apparent in Welsh history.

"For instance, what if Llywelyn hadn't taken sides with the rebellious nobleman Simon de Montfort, and by doing that anger the King of England? The player will eb able to decide whether to do that or not.

"It's a magical time in the history of the country."

  8. They're not Burricks. :)

I know, they're not Burricks and this mod has no relation to another computer game which also involves thieves, holy water potions, hammer obsessed religious cults and large, gas-breathing, bipedal lizards. But I sure do like Burricks, whatever they're called. :)

But again I don't think these small details detract at all from the monumental effort you're putting in and the majority of high quality work that is coming out of this project. The items look amazing for the most part, I love the spyglass, the inventor is awesome, and the texture quality of 4/5 of those spiders is top notch.

  9. I'm currently putting together and article about this, as I believe video game addiction is going to be a really big problem soon. The trouble is that no one has recognised this yet and there's no support for those who do become addicted. You just have to look at sites such as this to appreciate the scale of the problem. Recently a friend of mine had to smash up his WoW CDs to stop himself playing any more. :(

I don't think playing video games for long hours is in itself a bad thing. The best art, be it books or whatever, is immersive (and no one would argue that reading a book for hours is bad for you). Most game have a beginning a middle and an end, and once you finish, you're done for good. What worries me about WoW is that rather than holding up a mirror to the real world (like the best art does) it tries to replace it with another world. You don't learn anything playing WoW, it doesn't make you appreciate the real world more, it just says "you don't need real life, you can live, /eat, /sleep, /dance, in this fake world we've created." There's no beginning and end to it, you're just stuck in an endless loop of repetitive tasks to reach a pointless goal that will reveal nothing.

  10. Since I'm already picking nits, I think a kind of pale, see-through green would look better. Can you make the spider slightly transparent? At the moment it looks like it knocked over a jar of talcum powder.

Also I see too much intelligence in those Burricks' eyes. They need large, dull eyes, not sharp, scheming, take-over-the-world, eyes. They look sharp, quick and intelligent, while the Burricks I love are clunky, stupid and flatulent. And big, dumb foreheads, bulky bodies, and drooling mouths. They should look more like this!

  11. It seems a bit strange to expect the player to recognize it as a cross, and therefore holy, but also recognize it as a hammer and therefore not a cross which would be completely out of place in TDM, but, at the same time, recognize it as a cross. It's enough to make me cross eyed. *boom boom* ^_^

I'm also confident the player would realise that the hammer is a holy symbol in the Dark Mod universe - With all the statues, banners and hammer-related stuff the mod has produced it's be hard not to. Those hammers don't need to be cross shaped for people to appreciate their significance, so why does this hammer need to be?

I'm annoyingly nit-picking now, so I want to stress than 99% of everything else in those pictures look great.

  12. A cross is more universally recognized as 'healing' than a hammer. Besides, you could argue that it is just a stylized hammer.

Well it obviously didn't work because I thought it was holy water, not a healing potion. And why would a hammer be shaped like a cross? Wouldn't it make it heavy at the top and hard to use?

The cross is only recognized as 'healing' because it's the symbol of a real world religion that doesn't exist in TDM. Otheriwse it's just an instrument of torture - not healing at all!

All the spiders in that image have a texture. Not sure what you're talking about.

The white one looks like someone forgot to apply a texture to it. Also some legs seem to have shadows while others don't.

  13. Why doesn't the spider in that picture have a texture on it? I know the Dark Mod has textured spiders about.

Also why does the holy water have a cross on it instead of a hammer? That looks like a gaffe to me.

    Otherwise, everything looks great.

  14. I think the problem the Dark Mod has is that they really have to be selective when choosing what AI to make. They can't go 'yeah let's have a zombie, and a skull throwing ghost, and a demon' because they don't have time to make them all. So if you really want a zombie, fine, but that would probably be your lot undead-wise (unless there are any modellers out there who want to lend a halping hand with the AI).

  15. If you're going to give zombies weapons you might as well make them something else entirely. They're pretty pointless as anything but scenery, and the haunts provide the woo without being completely feeble.

What was your big contribution to the project again?.. I always forget...oh yeah, a story that no one liked, so you left in a huff.

You have a very selective memory. I left because I didn't like the story, that was chosen by the rest of the team without my control. Thank god it seems to have been dumped now.

Also, I didn't have enough faith that anyone would be around in five years to actually construct the campaign to spend years of my life working on the writing, and that anyone would every want to play it when it was released.

  16. Without a doubt, a landscape covered in coal power plants would be terrible, but to a poor nation, having a single coal power plant is almost certainly more beneficial than having none at all.

It just so happens that the coal mines in Wales are now re-opening after 15 years, because the price of coal has risen 300% after China's boom. I've talked to a few of the pit owners and they claim that because of scientific advances coal is now much cleaner than it was; they call it 'green coal'. If so it'll certainly be a good thing for the poor Welsh valleys areas, and the economic benifit probably outweighs the environmental harm.

    Coal covered smiley -
