  1. I reinstalled Doom 3 a while ago but realised I'd lost the manual with the CD key on it. This hasn't affected the Dark Mod because when I load a mission from the console it works without the key. But in future it could be a pain to have to load every mission from the console rather than go through the Dark Mod's new menu.

Rather than buy Doom 3 again just to get the CD key I was thinking about buying the expansion pack, just so that I haven't completely wasted my money. So my question is, can you play the Dark Mod with the CD from the expansion pack, or only the standard Doom 3 CD?

  2. I'm not sure how good an idea it is to release a WIP. Its seems that whenever someone shows a WIP on an internet forum he spends at least a few thread pages explaining that, no, it isn't done yet and taking a lot of 'advice' on obvious things he's already half way through implementing.

I'm looking forward to people complaining that 'it's much shorter that thief', 'why doesn't he sound like Garrett', 'I can't find Basso', etc etc.

But as someone who's never 'played' the Dark Mod (just run through a few buildings of my own making) I'm looking forward to downloading the demo release. :)

  3. I can't really see where they'd take Thief now. The game was good but the fan community is what elevated it to greatness, and I think it's appropriate that the franchise is succeeded by something of that community's own making. I think the people who will go to work on the Dark Mod once it is released have a better understanding of what made the Thief games great than whoever would end up doing another sequel.

  4. I guess the PC police don't allow us to call it "Christmas" these days.

Despite a lot of people grumbling about these PC Police I've never seen them about.

What do they look like? Asexual endangered pandas on bicycles I'd expect.

  5. Why would huge outdoor areas be a good thing? Mr Thief moves like a snail, that's why most missions are set in narrow medieval streets and cramped buildings. I don't want players to have to run half a mile just to get to the mission (we're not charging by the hour like World of Warcraft). :)

Also I doubt Quake Wars' FPS AI would be much use?

  6. I disagree completely. Yes useful information flows forward - it's called time. It's not going to flow backwards, is it?

If the people of the 14th century hadn't looked to the past the renaissance would never have happened. As a result of learning from the mistakes of the last century Europe is now a mostly unified force. America could have learnt from Vietnam and not got into another mess in Iraq. These are just three in an endless list of examples. Just because everything is jolly now, for you, doesn't mean it is for the human race in general and doesn't mean we won't need the past in the future.

Really this is surely the worst thing you've ever suggested. And don't say you're thinking outside the box, you're scraping the bottom of it. At what point do you suggest we forget the past anyway? What's the cut off point?

  7. Valve: We've Already Secured Our Fanbois; It's Not About Quality Anymore

I don't think that's true at all. Despite the evils of steam, Valve still make some of the best games out there. Linear, yes, shoot 'em ups, indeed, but still the best despite this. And Half-Life aside, Portal is genius.

  8. Of course the interface (menu, objective screen, and so on) should be available in different languages. But rather than translating mission content I'd rather see people release original content in different languages. I'd glady play a German mission, set in a German part of the dark mod City. My first mission is going to be set in an Italian part of town, for instance, and I'd be annoyed if people translated the Italian names and so on to English or German because they're as much a part of the setting as the architecture.
