  1.

I am just immensely grateful that the goal portability was never something to be compromised.

Having my favourite gaming genre (first-person sneaker) available on the platform of my choice (GNU/Linux) is more than I could have ever hoped for.

    I subscribe every single word!

Thief, with a modern design and engine, create by a community, on my linux box: it's a dream!!!!

    You guys Rock.

    REALLY REALLY REALLY ROCK! ;)

  2. Me too i want to say a BIG THANK YOU!

The Dark Mod is really a revolution in stealth game, ti's more then a simple mod. The quality of this work is INCREDIBLE!

It's the first complex stealth game community driven and crossplatform, and it IMHO the release date will rest in history.

I've played the Chalice of Kings, and i've tasted emotions from the past, when i was playing Thief for the first time. Really really thanks, the future now in limitless!B)

One thing you could do is after the restart and you have no sound, bring up the console (tilde key) and scroll up (mousewheel) till you see the error messages related to ALSA, and see if that helps. If you can't figure out the messages post it here and we'll try to help.

This is the error from Doom3 console on reload:

Warning: CVar 's_driver' declared multiple times with different initial value

Then a list of about 10-20 sounds with error, a list the first one the others are the same:

Warning: file def/weapon_pistol2.def, line 103: entity def 'weapon_pistol' previously defined at def/weapon_pistol :48

I hope it can helps ;)

  4. Hello!

I have to say that TDM it's even a LOT BETTER then what i expected!

You guys made an INCREDIBLE work, really really thanks!:laugh::laugh:

That said (it will be never enough!), i have a little problem: as described in subject, when I install a news mission from the main menu, and the Mod exit and restart automatically, after the qwuick restart i have no sound at all. Of course if i quit and re-enter in the TDM, the sound works and the mission is well installed, so i can play without any problem, but i think maybe this a little bug to track :-)

My configuration: Ubuntu 9.04 - 32 bit - no Pulse audio - Athlon X2 @3Ghz, 4 GB DDR2, ATI HD2600 with latest proprietary Catalyst driver, etc etc..

    Any suggestion?

  5. I agree that old games were more interesting, but, as Crispy said, some Indy games today are not so bad. I found Penumbra series made by 2 young sweden guys, very interesting, or the indy Portal (acquired by Valve) a very original game, or, to say some addictive casual game, i like a lot Numpty Physics (or the commercial version named Crayon Phisics deluxe).

However, if we are desperate, there is always the Interactive Fiction (IF) ...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_fiction

As you say, mature gamer, like you and me and i presume all the taffers, normally wants a more complex e deeper level of play. But today blockbuster game, like in other media (music, cinema, literature, etc etc), are alwyas more and more immersive, but less complex and deep. That's the mass market, my friend.:(

  6. IMHO it's little bit too positive for this review, not so balanced. You can have this kind of review from the publisher, not from an "indipendent" game magazine.

Anyway, it looks really cool. Some kind of Oblivion, but more brutal, i like the atmosphere and i like too difficult RPG games.

Pity i really don't like 3th person games, IMHO there is no immersion.

  7. In fact there are many descriptions on the wiki on how to get the demos (thiefs_den, saintlucia) running in Linux. Plus, DarkRadiant has always been cross-platform.

    Good to hear, thanks

I myself am occassionally developing in Linux, Tels and OrbWeaver are Linux-only developers.

So there are about 3 developers in a Linux environment.

Thanks again for your quickly reply :D

  8. Hi! :-)

I know you are all working on the release (good work guy! we are all with you! B)), but i'd like to know, if possibile, if there is any Linux user (and how much) in the DarkMod credited Devs, and if it will be some kind of official support for this platform.

    Thanks to all TDMtaffers!

  9. Ladro, maybe you want to join our beta tester team? I am myself on Ubuntu, but my PC has NVIDAI, and is currently sitting in a box in the new apartment, so I cannot test (my laptop doesn't run TDM :(

Having somebody testing on Linux and ATI sounds usefull, and maybe if there are problems we can figure them out before release?

If not, you could always wait for v1.0 and hopefully it works (but I don't remember any changes relevant to ATI and water :)

    I accept with pleasure!

I have to contact someone with a private message?

  10. No squiffy screen resolution, no freezes, no problems with the water.

I have some problems with the water. In fact with r_skip_postProcess set to "0" the game is not playable (2 fps). If i set the variable to "1" the game is fluid like a charm (but there is no cool water effect :-( ).

I'm in Ubuntu Linux 9.04 and an ATI HD2600 with latest proprietary Catalyst driver. Doom3 is super fluid with all effect active.

Of course i presume this is a problem with the pre-alpha version of TDM that was released with Saint Lucia a lot of month ago (maybe 1 year?)

  11. Yes, onboard video would be far more significant in slowing things down. I'm actually impressed that it's even *playable* on onboard video.

Some recent IGPs (Integrated Graphic Processor) now are not bad to play with Doom3 Engine (not so good to play super DX10/11 recents engines and games). Ie some new AsRock boards (chipset AMD 785G) have an ATI HD4200 onboard with *dedicated* 128 MB DDR3 (so it's not shared with the ram).

Also what else is running. Most Windows users have wasteful stuff running they don't even know. 1GB of RAM doesn't mean much if three quarters is in use before you start.

I agree, but because I use Linux

  12. My new machine loads Chalice of Kings in 90 seconds and surprisingly the same for Saint Lucia, both from first launch of Dark Mod.

It sounds good to me :-)

90 seconds it's great. But maybe i can use a super fast LVM from 4 disk in stripe 0... It can load faster, i presume :-)

    Thanks to all

  13. Thanks to all for reply :-)

I posed this question only because it was strange to me to see loading time so long, compared with Doom3 that's only mesured in seconds rather then minutes.

For me it's not a problem anyway: i'll play with pleasure TDM, also if it take 10 minutes to load the level

But i was curious if there was some serious change on the loading system timing on hte latest version on TDM that we *public* can't see.

The suggestion by New horizon get the point directly: maybe it's needed to tweak some compression settings for textures.

Anyway, on yours testing map, on the latest release, how much time it gets to load a level (i say average, of course it depends on HW and on the level itself) ?

  14. Hello guys :-)

First time posting here, so my hello to all and congratulation to all the super work done until now with TDM!:D

    (I'm named "Mazzortock" on TTLG)

I have a question about loading time: i replayed recently with Saint Lucia (GREAT, I love it!), but i noticed that to load the level the fist time it takes very long time 8about 6/7 min, i'm with Linux Ubuntu 9.04).

I'd like to know, if possibile, if the 1.0 beta relese of the super cool mod will be so slow on loading level.

Thank you so much and good work for the release! B)
