Epifire: that looks mighty fine! It has been discussed that static mesh-based building methods would deliver the highest graphical fidelity, but you are the first to try it on a larger scale. Good luck!
When you are creating your textures, don't forget that you will have to break them down into pieces depending on material type. (Alternatively, do an extra editing pass with nodrawsolid textures.

@Bikerdude: Got and installed the 2.04pre2 version. Will see if the behaviour persists.
At least I am back at work. Hopefully this will be a reasonably straight line to the finish.

I am running v2.01. What does that mean?
Unfortunately, can't upload/download things until the 16th. As I wrote elsewhere, Win10 downloaded itself on my laptop, and blew through my monthly DL limit. Thanks, Microsoft!

12000 brushes? blimey.
The mission is getting fairly big. Spent around two hours walking around it looking for bugs and seeing if the gameplay was up to par. Still, it is not an impossibly large project. It has taken about six months total so far (over a one and a half year period).
Melan is such a noob, posting problems in the newbie questions - where is the veteran questions thread?
I may know a thing or two, but there are still elementary tasks which elude me. This thread is just fine for the purpose! .)

I am only working on one map, although I save my results under different, incrementally numbered filenames. (i.e. erasing01.map, erasing02.map, etc.)

I am having some kind of trouble with randomly disappearing textures. I could not determine when they disappear from my map, but they seem to do so randomly after behaving normally for a long time.
All of them are textures which were originally used for objects (e.g. a sack, or coals, or something like that).
If it matters, my map is getting rather large and complex (12400 brushes, 5200 patches, 4300 entities).

Wow, thanks! I installed the GWX control panel and switched off the upgrade options. Turn out the sneaky updater has downloaded 7 GB worth of data without my knowledge or consent. Not only did it clog my laptop (I was wondering where that HD space went), it drained my monthly DL quota, so I have been sitting with a 128kbps bandwidth cap until the 16th.
I am not one of the Microsoft haters, and I have been satisfied with their products, but this was a shitty thing to do. How can I trust them in the future if they try to pull this kind of crap?

So Scumbag Win10 is trying to get on my system after repeatedly being told not to. The trouble is, it is no longer an offer, it is a countdown that starts when my computer is idle.
How do I circumvent these fuckers? I do not want to have Win10 on my PC now or in the foreseeable future, as I am happy with Win7 (and was happy with XP before they completely discontinued it). After their pressure sale tactics, they have also burned whatever goodwill I might have had for them (and I had a lot). This must stop.
(Please don't tell me to switch to Linux. I don't want to do that either.)

Some inspired lighting there.

Spooks: That's impressive! How did you achieve it?
-
Yes, they are generally good for performance, although it doesn't matter so much for simpler maps.

Interesting visuals. Adding a few less cubical elements would make it less rectangular. Perhaps a pile of dust on the floor? (prefabs/nature) Some debris? (objects/junk)

Can't wait to see a new mapper's first project!

I have listened to a selection. The style isn't bad, but what the mod needs most aren't really musical pieces but looped "effects", cues, drones, that kind of stuff.

Flinders mean shattered bits and pieces.

Too good.

You can use CSG Subtract to your heart's content as long as it is for simple shapes. It can get messy when complex shapes intersect in weird ways, but for simple cube-from-cube operations, it is okay.
-
O-ho! I have wanted a control pedestal like that for a while. I even have a few brush-based prefabs. This will come handy!
Thanks.

There are already multiple fireplaces and stoves among the assets, which are the common methods of heating in the implied setting.

So much for my long-awaited dodgem-themed level.

The A-Z tutorial doesn't impact building style, since it covers just the basics and gives you a technical skillset. The final product of my A-Z project was Return to the City (and a few discarded bits and pieces), quite different from Fidcal's Thief's Den. You are free to apply the tutorial's steps to your own ideas. In fact, you should!

I think once I've got some of the current stuff out of the way that shouldn't be too bad. I assume it'll be a static usage for it, so a separate mount and light (with appropriate DR friendly pivot points)?
That would be the idea.
The static is completely good. For the pylons, you could just use one of the existing glare particles, or scale down one of them to fit.

If im going to learn how to remove stuff i might as well learn to be a mapper.

One possibility the crashes may happen is if you have too little memory, particularly as your maps get large. However, they will still work all right (at least they have always worked for me). Just wait for the crash, or a few minutes, and reload.
