  1. Works of art aren't necessarily big games. But I'll stick to the games that made a big impression on me, and made me spend a lot of time on them.

    1) Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant: my formative CRPG experience. W7 is not just huge and devilishly complex, it is also memorable for Lost Guardia, a low-tech fantasy world under invasion by multiple interstellar factions looking for a magical artifact that could be used to create worlds. From giant moths to musket-wielding rhino-men and cheerleaders on red rocket sleds with lasers (bless 'em!), Wizardry has it.

    2) Master of Magic: the best of the 4X games. Town-building, armies, heroes, spell research and fantastic creatures.

    3) Unreal: in a game about killing things with rocket launchers, razor blades and bioslime, you find... beauty? That has always been the odd, compelling thing about Unreal. The original campaign has an amazing sense of mystery, melancholia and discovery. Unreal also had scale, and creative level design, which you can also see in the various UT maps. PlusnUnreal gave us Unreal Tournament, the multiplayer FPS game for those of us who did not have a network connection.

    4) Blood: the weapons are creative and varied, there are huge levels full of interactive bits, destructible terrain, tons of secrets, and amazing features you could never expect in a modern FPS. I have not even delved into the levels made by the mod community yet.

    5) Deus Ex: it is Deus Ex. Like Thief, when it came out, we thought it would be a stepping stone towards a new generation of immersive games. Instead, it became a sort of high water mark that has not been equalled, or even approached.

  2. They were certainly not bad, only a little bit more rough, and they used less detailed clothing textures. Even the very-very early 2006/2007 screenshots had some frankly amazing guard models. And a few others which have still not made it into the game (like the mage you can see in the main menu animation).

  3. I made a skin for the old woman, but something is definitely not right. Could be the normalmap? I don't have time to try and track down the problem right now.

It looks like an amazing modern painting, though!

And the bearded guard is truly excellent.

  4. It is subjective since people have different skills and approaches - they have different skills including avoiding AI, solving puzzles or just finding things in a switch/keyhunt. But there are a few approaches that could work.

Or could we add a "Novice-friendly" tag on the easy missions so that newbies get to play the easy ones first?

I like this one, sounds like a good idea. Also, a few "if you are new, start here" missions.

    Well they ARE easy :(

Even PD2: All the Way Up? :o ...My life has been in vain!

  5. Springheel: I could use these character heads in Penny Dreadful 3 (probably coming somewhere in early 2016). If you can find time to add them to the next TDM version, that's nice; otherwise, I'll experiment on my own. :)

  6. How many times have we seen comments like "that screen is too dark", "the ambient_world in your map is too bright" (etc).

Without a consistent standard, all these judgements are fairly arbitrary.

There is a light calibration room in the tutorial mission. I would say that should be a reliable yardstick for both players and mission authors.

  7. Having completed the game, I poked around with NOCLIP,

and ran into things that looked like components that were never incorporated into the game. For example there was a crown inside a utility area that I could reach only by NOCLIP. Is the crown unused or did I just somehow miss it.

That's... uh... an unfortunate oversight. I usually start my projects from the premade startpack found on the wiki, which has a few things set up for you to save time. One of those things is a valuable crown you can use as your default loot item. I forgot all about it, and it stayed in by accident.
