  1. Hm it appears to fix textures and lighting as well (so I'm told by a friend who's already downloaded it), buuut... it's a separate game? I'm having to download the whole thing again, and I'm told it exists alongside dxhr and missing link? They couldn't have just fixed the original game? Confusing.

If you buy it on steam under the same account you own the normal HR game, it will be applied to that game as if it were DLC, and it will also get a decent discount i believe.

As far as why they made it seperate, im not entirely sure. Likely it was either due to them wanting money for developing the next DX game or some other different reason.

  2. So the Director's Cut is some graphical improvements and AI improvements? Is there any new content to the game, like additional missions?

It fixes the boss fights in the game, which was everyone's main problem with the game.

Plus, it comes with the missing link DLC, which is essentially an additional mission.

  3. Haven't had issues with Steam for over 5 years. Works great. What's even better is that you can usually replace a game exe with a no-cd crack, and there you go, no more DRM. You don't even need steam running to play the game.

Same thing here pretty much, but i dont use no-cd cracks, instead i just move games that i have on steam that i know could work without steam into another non-drm folder for the game if i feel like it. Like Thief 1 and 2 and Doom.

  4. I doubt it. There was an internal leak of their team / group list of which Source 2 and L4D3 were the largest so basically it looks likely that L4D3 will be the first title to be released in source 2.

Its likely L4D3 will be released along side HL3 but i dont see it being released before HL3, mainly because every single version of source so far (Goldensource, Source) has launched with a Half-Life game. They cant cop out by just doing only L4D3. We will probably know for sure though some time soon.

  5. I think it's safe to say if we consider Steam as another outlet for more exposure, it would be conditioned on our normal release method & the game itself staying basically unchanged.

The possible issue I see that others have mentioned or alluded to is a flow of new players to our forum from a somewhat different gaming culture than what we're used to making demands on the direction the game should go, when I think we've done just fine with the culture we've built around ourselves up to now. But maybe there might be a parallel community, and they might even develop a branch that suits their interests (as long as it still plays all the FMs past and future)... That might be interesting to see.

That's definitely possible, and it might likely happen since ive seen a fair share of talented people in the steam community, especially when it comes to DOTA 2/TF2 cosmetics and weapon modelers.

  6. We had a long debate about it in the past and came to the decision TDM won't have achievements (I mean as a general feature; Individual mappers can do whatever they want if they can script it for their own maps). What we have is what you see on our stats screen -- things like the number of alerts, loot, stealth score, etc.

For the same reasons as we talked about in that debate, I don't think TDM should add achievements or a few other Steam related things even if it goes up on Steam. We shouldn't ever be changing the game except in terms of its own design principles IMO, or else we'd be changing the character of the game or gameplay in a direction that runs against what the game has stood for in its core design from the start -- stuff like minimalism (UI & gameplay), immersion, simulationism, playing-style "neutrality", etc. I personally think sticking to the core principles has been good for us so far, so it'd be good to still stick to them.

But if there were a way to upload the statistics to some online board by FM or whatever that might be cool; e.g., to compete for speed ghost runs or whatever.

Edit: Anyway, like I said at the start, even if we did have achievements, it would be up to individual FM makers to actually implement them. I mean they're already free to do that now; they always have been. If there's a contingent of players that want to see them enough they want to make FMs with them, more power to them. That's the way I think it should be done IMO -- for a lot of features TBH -- leave it to mappers to decide for themselves, and the toolkit itself is agnostic on it.

Makes sense, but still this shouldnt mean that TDM shouldnt be on steam. It would likely do just fine without any steamworks features if we wanted.

  7. I found out about it by just googling around stuff about the original thief series after I first heard about Thief 4 earlier this year. I was initially hyped about it but playing TDM and Thief 1 and 2 all the way through made me realize that Thief 4 will never be a good continuation to the Thief series, and introduced me to some really awesome games.

Gameplay wise, if.....TN1EF....... were to be it's own franchise instead of a Thief game, im going to reserve my judgement on that end until its out, but im expecting slightly less disappointment but still heavy disappointment on that end.

  8. Would Steam code have to be integrated to have functions like the Steam in-game overlay? Or does it work wihout it? It's a very handy feature.

I have gotten the steam game overlay to work on non-steam games without any coding work, i just simply add it to my library of games very easily and then launch it on steam.

So far I have tried it with alot of the games i have that don't use steam and it works just fine usually, unless it also uses another program to launch like Origin or something like that, and even then it likely works just fine anyhow. I really doubt that the in-game overlay would require any coding work.

  9. Cool.

I need to work on giving the player a character type.

Then a mapper can have the player pretending to be a Lord, or a City Watch guard, or a Builder, and the player will receive the appropriate greetings from the AI.

Atm, the greeting is selected from the generic set.

That would be very nice, I would like to see missions where you play as a guard or a lord trying to stop a thief from breaking and entering or something like that.

Or maybe, what if when this is done we had a role-reversal level for Knighton Manor??

  10. What I mean is expectations, it sure as hell would give rise to things like that. Not to mention 'BUT MY STEAMBOX CONTROLLER!'.

    Edit:

And today the guys over fron Xonotic covered this topic. The steamworks bit is a pretty big point.

It would give rise to those questions, but perhaps we could just tell them to wait or to try and contribute something to work towards that. That or we could wait until we have enough coding manpower to cover the useful/"important" steamworks features. Really this shouldnt mean that we shouldnt or cant move to steam at all.

    EDIT:

Really, I think we should stop trying to find ways to say that a steam version with steamworks for this game is impossible and instead find ways that we could make a steam version of the game possible, start working towards them by fixing glitches/bugs and adding more features, and then eventually when we have the people, time, and resources to get it done, we get it done.

  11. I have read 0 posts in this thread... ok like half of the last one above this.

I just think there are some major quality bits to be fixed, and portability issues to be fixed before something like this is even through of. It would be great for abusing their bandwidth tho. But how long until 'we need achievements', 'why cant I save onto steams savegames storage?' etc etc.

Your right, if there are some major issues to be fixed it might be a pretty good idea to fix those before doing a steam release.

As for stuff like achievements and cloud savegame storage, those arent required for steam games so i dont think we would have to worry about them until we wanted to add them and had the manpower to do so, its not really much to worry about.

  12. If the community is serious about growing TDM (this isn't a foregone conclusion by any means - I think the goals need to be clearly established first if they haven't been already) then Steam should be the be all and end all of distribution. Rightly or wrongly, if it isn't on Steam, most PC gamers won't know that it even exists or will think that it isn't good enough to pass Greenlight.

Steam has just grown to such a scale where it's basically a necessity to reach the masses.

    11520350-digital-marketshares-2011.jpg

This is great news for TDM because all the hard work has already been done - the game is good and a couple of years ago it wasn't possible to get decent distribution without going through a large publisher which was next to impossible unless you had some serious weight behind you.

I don't know much about it but to get on Steam there's two paths as far as I know: Greenlight or by submitting directly where they make their own internal assessment.

This post pretty much shows how important getting this game on steam would be. If it's released on steam then we would get a humongous PR/Playerbase boost, guys.

  13. Sounds to me like any additional information isn't relevant until the game has actually been Greenlit by the Steam community.

Not true, they have a contact page on greenlight where you can ask about things related to greenlight, which seems to not matter whether your a developer or not.

My guess is that we will be able to put The Dark Mod on steam, but it wouldnt work through the updater since steam itself provides a (good, this is just an opinion though.) way to update games, and when installing new games it makes a folder in the steamapps folder called "common" for whatever game you are installing. I think this just basically means that we would have to just update the files for the game in a different way than through the updater with steam, and it shouldn't be too complicated to manage if you ask me.

Putting Steamworks into the game however would require a coder, judging from the FAQ, which that makes sense. However I know that just because a game is on steam that doesnt mean it HAS to have steamworks features. Also-however steamworks is considered a user enhancing experience (or something like that, i know its certainly nice to have achievements personally) so it would probably be nice to have someone who is able to code that stuff in, eventually.

  14. Perhaps the game can be released on Steam and regularly, DRM-free.

It totally can, there are a few games at least that have been or will be released on steam that have DRM free downloads/purchases hosted elsewhere.

I dont get why people are paranoid about that, TDM will be able to have a DRM free download if you dont like DRM and it should work just fine, just because it's on steam it wouldn't mean EVERYONE would HAVE to use steam to play TDM.

  15. Seeing as the main site is down, presumably because of the press coverage, another benefit to Steam occurred to me: Hosting. It can't be cheap to begin with, much less to improve it to the point where TDM can support this newfound popularity. But if Steam was involved, they would host the game.

Yeah, they would host an easily accessible and easily downloadable version of the game for those who either like or dont mind using the steam software, however greenlighting it doesnt mean the game would have to switch to steam completely. For example, the other FOSS game I was talking about, Warsow, has a non-steam download on their site, and they said once the steam version of their game is up that they will still have that download up.
