  1. Hey, well I returned my card and I am now looking for a new one.

Now my question is: How much of a difference in performance will I see between a ~$250 card and a ~$180 card? I ask because I was contemplating on the following:

    - SAPPHIRE 100154L Radeon X1800XT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 VIVO PCI Express x16 Video Card - $259 w/ rebate

Or, I could go for a less powerful card for around $180, but I'm not sure how much performance I would lose.

Well, after doing some more research, based on some comparisons, it is irrational (in my opinion) to buy the X1800XT when you can get a virtually equally peforming card for $100 less--the Geforce 7600GT. See the comparisons here:

    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view....1866&cid=3&pg=8

I'm not paying an extra $100 for roughly 5-10 more FPS (and only at high resolutions/with AA/AF enabled for that matter. Otherwise both cards are pretty much on par)...

Here is the card I'm disputing on getting now:

Tell me what you guys think...

EDIT: I just realized they were referring to the X1800XL. Though, the X1800XL is even more expensive than the X1800XT, so I believe the Geforce 7600GT is still a better choice by far.

  3. If you use Firefox, Spar, I'd recommend getting "AdBlock". It allows you to explicitly block certain websites, and you can even use wild cards in your blockings. For instance, if you hate intellitxt like I (you know, that feature where certain keywords are automatically set to hyperlinks), then just type in your block list " *intellitxt* " (without quotes, but with the astericks), and Walla! No more intellitxt!

I can send you my list of blocked elements if you want. My pages load SOOOOO much faster. No longer do I have to wait for "http://ads.etcetc" to load before I can pull up a web page. You can also block flash elements, pictures, pop-ups, and those in-page pop-ups too.

  4. Argh! This is really pissing me off...

Whenever I fill out an RMA Return form on Newegg and click the Submit RMA button, I am taken to a white page with the following text in red: "Sorry! The RMA record does not exist!" WHAT RMA Record?! Happens both in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

Just submitted an email to rma@Newegg.com to process my RMA manually. I'm quite positive my request will go unfulfilled as it is through E-Mail, but I guess it is worth a try...

  5. I just ran ATI Tool and I started getting extreme artifacting within 3 seconds--default clock speeds. ATI Tool recorded my temperatures as a mere 42C...

I'm returning it tomorrow. Not for a replacement, but for a refund. I wanted a more powerful GFX card anyways.

I'm going to be buying a new graphics card, but I don't know which one to get. My budget is ~$250 USD. Anyone have any recommendations?

  6. It seems that I am getting significant artifacting and occasional freezes in Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 (the only games I have ATM). The odd thing is, my CPU and GPU temps are perfectly fine (according to the Nvidia temp monitor). Why would I be getting artifacting if my GPU is not overheating? It has yet to even breach 70 degrees. Maybe the temp monitor on my card is inaccurate? (but could it really be inaccurate by 40-60 degrees?!).

Anyways, it is a fanless GPU, but that still does not explain my artifacting problems given that the temperatures are quite low and normal...

  7. True ;) . I'd never buy high-end stuff. I use to, but it's so rediculously expensive.

I don't really expect this PC to last that long considering new technologies are imminent, though (the new AM2 standard is two months away, but AM2 won't really be useful until sometime in 2007), but I guess you could end up waiting forever. In the mean time, I'll probably just buy a new GFX card. Then, when AM2 comes around, I'll just upgrade my motherboard, processor, and ram. Hopefully the PSU will still be good and going then.

  8. I am building a low-end/mid-range PC with a target price of $550. My goal is to build something that will be satisfactory for the time being, but substantially upgradable in the future. So far, I think I've done pretty well (much more credit to those on the steam forums and hardware IRC channels that have assisted me), but I'm trying to get as much input as possible. Therefore, if my fellow DarkModders would be so kind as to analyze the configuration I have below, your criticisms would be very welcome :D.

In addition, what are your opinions on cheap vs. expensive Power Supply Units? Do I really need to spend >70 to get a quality PSU? I'm seeing the same stats of $90 units on $50 units, but I'm warned that the $50 units are prone to die and kill your whole system. And then there are others that say the $50 units are perfectly fine--even for a person who plans on making a substantial upgrade in the future. One part of me wants to go for a $50 unit--in place of a $90, and spend the difference on a higher quality video card, and the other part of me wants to ensure stability and upgradability for the future. I'm torn to say the least..

Also, how much of a difference is there between CAS2 and CAS2.5 DDR ram?

    Thanks ;)

  9. I came across this information from a friend not too long ago, and I figured it was worth sharing. I'm not sure if anyone here has ever heard of him, but there is this really idiotic comedian who calls himself "Carlos Mencia," and he has a show, "Mind of Mencia," on the TV Station, Comedy Central. I'm oblivious as to whether or not this show is broadcast in countries outside of the United States, so I'm not sure if this thread will apply or interest much of anyone here (I recall a lot of the posters here being from countries other than the US).

But anyways, I've always had a sort of natural hate for this person. I don't think I've ever laughed at any of his acts--I actually just get really frustrated and angry when I listen to his comedy. I'm not sure if it is his material, or just his attitude, but--in either case--I simply hate him. Unfortunately, "Carlos Mencia" is extremely popular amongst the youth in America, which (even though my knowledge of modern youth in America makes his popularity unsurprising) compels me to hate him even more.

With this in mind, it just feels really good to know this idiot is an act/joke thief.

Details, including sound and video recordings, follow - http://www.joerogan.net/main.php?archives=1&article=44170

I haven't watched either of them myself, as I am short on time and Satellite is terrible, but perhaps someone here might enjoy them.

  10. Decent game. It can be quite scary at times (especially if you have a nice surround sound system, and you play at the recommended brightness level in the options), and the puzzles require much more thought than the usual. I'm quite certain your average player would give up long before completing some of the puzzles in the game.

There are some obvious flaws, though. The narration is entirely unbelievable (and rather poor in general). This was one of the biggest mood destroyers for me. Likewise, the AI is quite horrible, lip-syncing is inexistent (another big mood destroyer; I can deal with semi-good graphics, but this just looks rediculous), and there are some areas in the game that are overbearingly difficult, in such a way that you often need to depend on pure luck to get through them. For instance, one time I found myself obligated to run past an armed enemy, in broad daylight and unarmed, down a 5ft wide corridor (it was on about the 10th time that I was lucky enough not to get shot twice and die). This is outright horrible game design--no idea what they were thinking there.

Other than those things, it's an awesome game. I don't think I've ever played a scarier game to be honest (I guess you could say it's a scary one if Doom 3 never scared me even one bit). For a large part of the game, you're entirely unarmed, without weapons, making it quite thrilling to hear the horrid, ever more audible growls of some sort of snarling monster gain on you as you run through a sewer, admidst experiencing visual and audio hallucinations. Sometimes you don't even know what is behind you, but you just start running, knowing that turning around will only mean death as Jack will go into a mental break down if he sets sight on whatever lay behind. Often, and if possible, it is a much better choice to avoid confrontation. There are many parts of the game that just tease your fear (for instance, in one part of the game, you're required to enter some sort of sewage pool, in which you cannot see into, and about 20 feet before entering the pool, you experience a vision of something looking up from below). In addition, cut scenes are integrated right into the first-person gameplay, and the storyline is top notch. The beginning is very unique and intriguing, too.

I haven't completed the game yet, not nearly, but I'd definitely recommend it if you're willing to devote some patience to the beginning of the game (starts off slow), and don't mind the few bugs/problems noted above.

  11. Thanks for the recommendations guys. I'll be sure to look into them when I can find enough time.

In school, I sort of feel like I'm only getting a quarter of the picture, and it is so unbelievably frustrating when my teachers tell me not to worry about how provided methods work--just to blindly use them. We've gone over many things in Java (data structures, inheritance, etc etc), but I am still completely oblivious as to what the "big picture" is. If I was given an assignment to write a large-scale program, I wouldn't have the slightest idea of where to start; I really don't know how to apply much of what I've learned. All of the projects that I have written for the class in actuality take no more than 10 - 20 minutes to complete, and only cover the basics of the language.

It seems that there is so much other shit I should have learned way before even getting into programming. The problem is I don't know where to start. I dont know, maybe I'm just rambling from being extremely tired and drugged up on prednisone. For some reason, I'm unable to comprehend simple sentences at the moment. I can "read" them, but nothing makes sense. I'm going to bed.

  12. Oh man, I loved camping--especially in Counter-Strike. It was a really fun "style" of play until admins became more forceful and votekicks were implemented. It was especially fun in as_oilrig :)

It seems that whenever online gameplay became more restrained, and you were forced to play "the right way," there would be another fun aspect of the game that would lose its amusement. Nowadays, players have it hardwired into their brains that anything other than, in Counter-Strike, for example, rushing is sinful. The only reason being is that they're too damn impatient to wait a few minutes. They're all too damn serious and have lost sight of what the essentials of a game are.

Though, I guess a lot of the stuff I liked to do back then was contrary to the likes of many others, but I sincerely know that those times of play were the most fun and hilarious. Team killing is probably my favorite way of playing *gasp* . The early and good versions of Day of Defeat were perfect for this, and likewise with early versions of Desert Combat. It wasn't so much as the fact that they didn't always enforce team-kill penalties, but just in accordance to how the game mechanics worked.

When I get a chance, today, I take on a more discrete form of team killing, like following a newbie sniper on a 5 minute treck to get to an opportune sniping point, and then stabbing him in the back as soon as he lays down :) . Well, maybe that's not discrete, but you get what I mean; it's a big contrast from taking the Scud Launcher in Desert Combat and launching it on your own base :D . For some reason, I have a big fetish for pissing really serious people off B) .

  13. I've been using Java for a few, but I'm looking to get into C++ Programming. Rather than just arbitrarily selecting a C++ Programming book or other resource, I'd like to seek the assistance of those here who are well experienced with the language. I'd first like to learn the basics of the language, and then get into some game programming. I understand that searching google would, of course, manifest many resources, but there is so much available it is quite overwhelming.

  14. Ive been away from TFC for about a month now playing Day of Defeat, the HL WW II mod. Its a hoot too. Im sure ill drift back eventually.

    I can't stand the present DOD :(

It's too overbearing and saddening to see the what they've done to a once amazing (as in even more amazing) game. 1.3b Forever :D

  15. Ive been playing TEam Fortress for years, what servers are u on?

Haha, well, let's just say that I play when I can. I have satellite internet, and therefore gaming in general is something I cannot do very often. When I go over to a friend's who has cable or something, I try to get a little in, though.

I love the game more than anything. I must admit I liked it even better when people weren't so darn good at it, though :D. I think this is the reason a lot of people shy away from it nowadays; it's much easier to adjust to a game like Counter-Strike. Steam's popularity has pumped some life into it recently; at least it's good for something. Now only if we had a lot more newbies, and a lot less bots ;).

I love turning the volume way up. It sounds like the house is exploding :)

  16. Been following along with this game for a while. I have yet to see graphics as good as this in any game to date, though, some next-gen console stuff that hasn't been released yet comes pretty close.

I'm guessing Playstation 3, maybe Xbox360, will be able to run at this detail, but I think PC's have a ways to go. In 2007/2008 a game like this might be reasonable. But, now, I think all of those that went along a bought a 300/400+ Nvidia 6800 or 7800 will be reluctant to upgrade for a long while now.

Unless it comes out for the PS3, I highly doubt I'll ever play the game. Half-Life based games are more than enough for me, though. TFC continues to top any game that I've played to date.

  17. Will this mod use the same form of sword-play dynamics present in Thief 1 and 2? For instance, when swinging a sword within the game, the sword would accurately impact and come to halt when colliding with another hard object, be that object a metal torch holster or a contending guard's sword. Of course many games have done this, but in Thief it was very accurate and it gave the game extra depth; you didn't have to "guess" where the sword would strike by utilizing previous knowledge of unrealistic game mechanics (like most games), but rather you could apply realistic gaugings to estimate where the strike would hit.

  18. I think, deep down, everybody wouldn't mind having something like this in the game if it were to be implemented correctly. There are many mundane things that could have been implemented in present games, and yet nobody would fret about them as they would have no negative impact on the gameplay (and they might even be neat for a while). For instance, (And I understand these are drastically rediculous examples when compared to your idea) I don't think anyone would mind having the ingame capacity to do such things as rip grass out of the ground and flick it in the air, or perhaps pull coins and jems out of their loot-bag and spin them on some surface. Surely, no person would deplore such things..

But, as overburdened modification developers, I think the team is just reasonably trying to eliminate all instances and outlets of extravagant work, and it's easier to criticize the negative mechanics of some idea than to state this. Modifications have extremely limited resources as their developers are 99% of the time encumbered with other works of everyday life (and I expect you already know this). Of all of the games and modifications I have followed, none have EVER lived up to even their core, initial outlines delegated; the finished product always turns out to be about half (and sometimes, but rarely, three-fourths) of the original blueprints. To be honest, and I don't want to sound as if I'm not confident in this modification's ambitions, I would be pleasantly surprised if The Dark Mod resolved a product on par with the complexity of the past Thief games.
