  1. Personally, all I'm going to say is that I'm glad the Dark Mod has content managers who do their job. Too many mods often die out or end up being subpar because they don't have any proper management of time, content or such.

Regarding custom models, people are free to make any models they want. However, it makes sense not to place them in the core if they don't fit in with Dark Mod's other assets. I would suggest that for such models, they could be placed under a miscellaneous category and be picked from there. Something like the Thief Object Repository for Dark Mod objects would be good too, if someone could maintain it well enough.

  2. Considering GMDX is such a game changer I'm a bit confused why the devs can release it without steam but the Revision devs seem to have had no choice but steam because of Square Enix influence, or have I missed something?

The reason seems to be this post:

Well John in the team had some previous connections with Square Enix and Eidos Montréal as he was community manager for one of their forums a while back. We started discussing a possible Steam release with some of his contacts and off it went icon_smile.gif We actually timed the release with the sale to somewhat lessen the blow for people that doesn't own the game on Steam.

  3. I guess I'm going to be the major detractor of this mission than, or more specifically its writing. :P It's true indeed that the mission's premise is somewhat unique, and it does set an oppressive atmosphere in some scenes, particularly the one in the foundry. However, I found the writing to be very hammy about its message. I get that you want to point out that the character is doing something wrong by stealing, but you don't need to hammer it in by repeating it in three readables. Furthermore, the scenes themselves end up being a bit silly or dull for the sake of some gameplay/story decisions, like the pointless long corridor in the foundry, or the absurd amount of wealth lying around in an inventor's house. I think with some restraint and subtlety in the writing, this would have been a much better mission. The gameplay could be polished up a bit more too, but this mission wasn't gameplay centric anyway so it isn't that important.

  4. GMDX is a mod I've been following for a while, and they announced their release date recently. They will upload a bunch of videos in the follow up to the release. So far, they've uploaded 3 videos, and it's shaping up to be great. Let's hope it lives upto the expectations set.

  5. Testmap and map commands are mentioned in Fidcal's tutorial: http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=A_-_Z_Beginner_Full_Guide_Start_Here%21

    • Type and Enter map Tut/T001. Tip: Press the up arrow key toggles back through the history of what you have typed before so your dmap should re-appear. Just press the Home key and delete the 'd'. An alternative is to use 'testmap' instead of dmap which does both dmap and map but I prefer to see dmap's results.

Anyway, what possible reason could be for the testmap and map commands not to be recognized?

  6. A Revision Project is not like changing a Picasso Piece, more like adding color to a black and white picture so is more digestible and more contemporary with what we see today.

But from what I'm seeing, Revision is like redrawing a Picasso piece according to someone else's style and standards, hence some places have changed layouts and there's a lot of liberties taken with the artstyle. If they really only wanted to make the original smoother and technically better looking they should have made something like SCP: https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=7116.0 .

As for changing the blocky arches to actual ones, it would be welcome but I'm sure it would require redoing the geometry allowed by the engine. There are ways to get complex looking architecture in the Dark engine but from what I've seen no fan mission so far has had perfectly curved arches, only approximations of those.

  7. So a lot of people want the old games just with modern graphics. And I belive, many people who want to improve a game's graphics will also find other small things that they could (in their opinion) improve. And then it will become difficult to draw the line...

I'm pretty sure you'll never get exactly modern graphics on an old engine, and as such there are quite a few people who won't appreciate these games not just because of their graphics, but also because it doesn't offer the gameplay that modern titles have. You can try to make it look cleaner with high resolution textures and removing some geometrical issues, but even then there are going to be issues like old shaders, limited object properties, clunky physics etc. In any case, it's obvious that Revision isn't just an attempt to make the original game look good but rather a bunch of people taking huge liberties with the artstyle and some levels because they think they can make it better. This is definitely crossing a line between "graphical upgrade" and "redoing things to make them better".
