  1. I´m actually playing the Christmas Contest Missions and as I read the threats no one seems to have issues with too loud music but me! Only demagogue confirmed on his mission.

But I haven´t had the footsteps problem. Likely because I´m now always ghosting and is there a guard that could be in the way I take him out. (and because I´m so good it never ends in them searching for me, so no sound-bugs can be triggered like the ones I mentioned in the posts before)

What about my method in the Crown of Penitence? Did someone tried it? It´s really only about 5 minutes!

  2. Hey, dammit. No complains about the music? The music itself is great, really. But it was far too loud, again!!

So it is just me. FUCK IT!

But I solved it by saving and reloading that save instantly. Then the music was very calm, but not adjustable by the ambient slider. (Finally a bug that serves me)

Because the music changed a lot I had to do this quite often but because I´m playing with gamepad and headphones it took a while to reach out for the keyboard (quickload-key, in my complete darkened room) while my ears got mutilated!

This pissed me off a lot and so I couldn´t enjoy this mission like the others. Maybe because of this I rated the story with 'poorly'. Did I miss a readable?

I only found the book of the guy in the hut and the accident report.

But I was able to ghost this mission. Only one time the guy on the water nearly saw me as I looked before the tavern or what that was (there was nothing, but because of this I had zero stealth score! I ghosted complete! I know, it´s over-sensitive).

I didn´t had to 'really' reload and I played on hard. But I missed 340 loot or sth like that. I for sure missed the

    rafters

. But it was fun to get the

torch-guards pocket. I studied his route from above the crates. I felt like a Predator somehow.

If I haven´t had this music-bug I would´ve had more fun. This really pisses me off (I said it again!) because no one else seems to have this but me! Only me!

  3. Yes, like so many said before myself: nice little mission. And will someone please explain the metal-chest-key-issue? Cause I´m missing 200 loot and I thought this key could be the 'key' for the missing loot. :)

It was fun sneaking around but as I got into the toilet I was shocked because nowhere to go, the guard came in and saw me so I had to kill him and lost half of my health. This was meant to be a trap for the player, right? Cause for me there wasn´t much time to get in and out again. (If you don´t know what´s inside-> nothing!)

Why didn´t anyone mentioned that the music was far too loud? (seems that almost every contest mission has that problem) But it was solvable by tipping the ambient slider in the menu, back to game, and than back to the position you want the slider. So it works how it was meant to be. (worked in other missions too, but not all of them)

And what about the metal-chest-key? Oh I already asked that.

I liked the rats eating on the cheese. Will there be any cats in the future? (maybe chasing rats, that would be nice)

  4. Nice trailer!

Just a question: When you say "Thief", you mean the trade itself and not the 'inferior' franchise that seems to exist out there? (Just don´t even think I would offend THIEF!!! just joking)

What I mean with this: Does the story take place in Bridgeport or in the City?

  5. I had a lot of fun translating those phrases. But I couldn´t find the origin for 'piss up a rope'. I know what it means (like piss off, right?) but I want to know the origin!

Of all things you named 'letting the cat out of the bag' we have exactly word for word in german, so I could have known, but it didn´t really looked like a bag IMO...

  6. I don´t understand this. If released this could boost the franchise and Activision could make a game on their own and profit from the growing community. This way I would guess that no one of this community will ever pay for an Activision product.

I hope the DarkMod is save but I can´t see anything offending (this is maybe not the right word) in it right now.

  7. Hell, 8 pages in here! Maybe I read them later after I played this mission on Expert. Just finished on Hard and I was amused! :) So if I have questions that are already answered, forgive me! I just want to leave my comment for this great mission.

But first: I couldn´t resist and read the last posts and there I saw that you can

rescue Harlan? I assume this is an optional objective or appears only on Expert?

I guess, cause demagogue talked about differences in the difficulties in his readme.

I first report the bugs I experienced, though it was only one:

The ambient sounds (wind and music that was really great stuff, btw, the music I mean) were very loud! But unlike in other FM´s this time the ambient slider in the menu worked, so it wasn´t annoying at all. As I reloaded the ambient sound was almost unhearable, but it was solvable by adjusting the ambient slider in the menu, this way the set volume was instantly back and I had to lower the slider again because it was so damn loud! And if I reloaded inside (the places there normally was calm) the last played ambient was hearable (in a volume how it should be IMO and I have to add that I hate calmness because of hearing my PC working).

Oh, and in Sorens kitchen and the tree before Bensons house I got stuck. I came out of the kitchen edge, but while 'in' the tree I had to reload an older save.

And now I remember that the street guards wanted to go through Sorens front door that I picked before, but they couldn´t open it. I had to help them. After they walked their round, the same occured again. (funny, as I locked the backdoor and the guard tried to open it, he just turned around! Not like the stupid guards in Thief, they just stand there and praying to the builder that he please open the door, hehe) After I locked the front door they still tried to get in.

Oh, I remember another bug: This äh, what was his name, Duddledamn or something, the one with this illegal business, floated over his bed while sleeping! (This reminded my of the second Ghostbusters movie :D )

At the beginning of the mission I was kind of lost because there seemed no way to get to my objective and so many doors not lockpick-able.

Now I know that I should have just turned to the left after getting through Sorens back door, but insted I walked through the whole town and tried every door before I got there.

But I was glad that I didn´t gave up. At first I didn´t understand the route I had to go but at the end it all fitted together.

I really loved the atmosphere that evolved with the great story (no wonder it had first place in the story category during the contest).

At the end in the second floor in the warehouse I sometimes thought I am in Silent Hill. Ah, and i found a, ähem, secret. Ähem, between the legs of the slaughtered girl. rolleyes.gif

BTW, I was really glad to finally see some females. A pitty that they were all dead. (Does this tell us something about the mission author? ;) ) Or doesn´t they have voice-overs, yet?

So all together, this was a really great mission. Here I had the most fun of the missions I played yet. (Maybe because I hadn´t really an annoying sound bug this time, like in the others, though I had a sound-bug, but nothing serious)

  8. @demagogue, Fidcal

Maybe I have it wrong, but did you just say it is possible to get

first to the warehouse without being in the lab before?

My impression was that the way is pretty linear.

I just finished the mission (well, last night) and it was really great. The coolest I played so far. But I think I leave my full comment in the main thread...

  9. @Tels: PM me where I should send the save. You are aware that the save is about 86MB, are you? I think my googlemail can handle it, but never tried a large attachment like this.

But please try my method, it´s about only 5 minutes cause I wanna know if it´s only me or not! And if you have the same results like me I won´t need to send a savegame. :)

'Sounded' pretty interesting what you told there. (though I had to google VirtualBox  )

@7upMan: My Realtek Audioconsole (Realtek HD Audiokonfiguration in der Systemsteuerung) was pretty easy to handle because it detected every of my three Headphone cables and I could choose what each stands for. (Front speaker, rear and center) I choose 6 Chanel system and tried this test where a bee was flying around my virtual head. All was fine and right!

But the sound was pretty calm (not clean and much noise while system start), though I turned everything up. (wave, master volume and each speaker) Also I could hear a noise when moving my mouse. This wasn´t hearable while I used my gamepad which emulates my mouse.

As I first started DarkMod (I didn´t made a reboot of my OS) I saw the gamescreen, but wasn´t able for any input. No mouse, Keyboard or Gamepad! Somehow I made my OS making a reboot. After that DarkMod seemed normal and as I enabled Surround in the Audio-Menu DarkMod wasn´t complaining. But as I started the mission I had this console-crash I mentioned before. And then I had enough.

But thanks for trying to help, anyway. :)

  10. I have to add a note:

I just replayed this mission and this bug occured, too. But this time I just took the mechanist-like loot the guard stood before. When he realized it was gone he alerted the two other guards that came by and as they relaxed, all three of them lost footsteps! I played the mission to the end and the one that patrols everywhere downstairs never got his footsteps back. So it is for sure no area-problem.

  11. My work PC has 16 Gbyte memory and 8 cores, btw :P

 My goodness! Might I ask what do you need such a monster for?

    And thanks for the infos.

The newest game I´m playing is Doom3/TDM. For anything else I have my PS3. Since most PC-games come out with so lots of bugs I´m not interested in them anymore. Only for Thief4 I´ll make an exception, maybe.

So for just 750 MB RAM more that my games won´t use anyway and an troubling OS, I think I leave it as it is.

Now let´s get to this fu**ing sound bug:

I tried Realtek but this is not an option. The sound through my (5.1) headphones is horrible and DarkMod seems not capable of activating even Surround on this. Loaded the mission and got a console crash telling me about failure for OpenAL or something. (not OpenGL)

But I´m pretty sure that this is a DarkMod problem.

Please try this yourself: (I did this 5 times and it was every time the same result)

Load the FM 'The Crown of Penitence' and head for the stairwell behind the locked door. (It´s no matter if you blackjack one or ghost, I tried both) When you open the door let yourself be seen and then run under the stairwell and hide behind the barrel. At least the two nearest guards should follow you. (steal the mechanist-like loot, so the guard is more aware and reacts faster when he sees you) When they relax and getting back to shift they should lose their footsteps. You can check by watering the torch and look in the hallway: The Captain (the one who had the key and walking up and down) and the one going the short route from the cellars shouldn´t be having footsteps.

When I ghosted I had 4 or 5 guys searching for me, but only the mentioned two guards lost footsteps. It seemed they lost them when relaxing, but before getting back to their area of patrol.

While I was trying this several times I used different settings for my soundcard/headphones. I tried disabling 5.1 output (Doom3/TDM doesn´t support this anyway, does it? Only 4 speakers, right?), disabling EAX, disabling CMSS 3D Surround and the EAX & Surround settings in TDM itself but always I got the same results in loosing footsteps.

Please tell me what you´re experiencing by this method!

  12. Very little, but nice looking mission and nice patrol routes! Sadly I had again the missing footsteps bug, so I was really annoyed and almost quit before finishing. But I didn´t.

I even found all loot but one!! Where is the last coin? Talk now!;) Very likely I just oversaw it. Or is there a place with only one well hidden coin? I doubt it.

I was long searching for the crown until

I found the burned note and then I just knew the safe is for sure behind the painting and those vases looked suspicious, too. B)

I was happy to see almost everything frobable. I don´t know why some other missions don´t support this, because the frobsystem is so great for luring guards and mess around.

But the mission briefing: very beautiful to watch, but I wasn´t able to read all in time! The text was far too short displayed, really! I had to restart the briefing four or five times to read everything.

Please, FM authors, think about the people that don´t have English as their mother language! I would suggest a scrollable briefing-text-only-screen just after the briefing as an option! Could you do that, please? Because this wasn´t the first mission where I had this problem.

And for the readables in the game: the scrolltexts were so little! I don´t think most of the people in Bridgeport have such good eyes to read this, especially the dumb guards!

  13. Don't know where you were standing but it is possible to ghost it even in the main hall obective. That guard shouldn't really see you get it because you don't move at that moment and he can't see the thing itself. Usually only the patrolling guard notices it is gone because he walks around the front.

I was just behind the crown pedestal. The guard I mean stood right next to me (1 or 2 meters). As I remember now I´m sure that I stood up to get the crown. And then he saw me. On a later attempt I realized that I don´t need to stand up to get it.

I have to add that I liked the armory very much and all the arrows and weapons. But I wondered why the axes weren´t frobable. They were looking good!

And I found the Healing Potion in the armor! Aren´t I just the greatest? tongue.gif

  14. Hmm, I just finished 'The Crown of Penitence' and the music there was everywhere hearable and always in same loudness and I was able to change it´s volume with the Ambient-setting in the menu.

In the old Thief´s I experienced the same. Some tracks were sticked to certain areas and when you got away from that area the music lost its volume (like in your mission).

But there were missions where the music just got turned off when exiting the area.

There must be a special music setting. Maybe you just put your music as sound-effects? I´m just guessing, you´re the expert! ;)

I hope it´s not a problem in DarkMod if someone wants to use more than one track, though.
