1. Woohoo, I got 9! I thought the first car w/city was real - I still can't believe it's CG.

3/4 on bonus (I thought the colorful salamander thing was CG, mainly because of how oddly the tail twisted without any creases)

The part 1 version - 8/10 (I thought the real nails were CG and the CG nails were real, woops!)

One of the main things I looked for were tiny random imperfections, hinting it was a real photo

  2. Okay, I downloaded and unzipped it to a folder on my desktop "DarkRadiant". Inside the zip are a few subfolders, a bunch of dll's, something called "RADIANT_MAJOR" (and MINOR), a couple other things, and "darkradiant.exe".

So, I click to start "darkradiant.exe", and after accepting the default "Global Preferences" the program starts. It looks a lot like Doom 3 Edit.

But I can't do much! I managed to make a cube room, load doom's Hell textures and paint the walls, add a player start and a light, but what now? There doesn't seem to be any build bsp or play game mode or anything like that. Am I just being blind?

I guess I'm not much of a pioneer, since I feel really lost! I like to have some basic tutorials, rough "trail" laid out so to speak, then I can flesh it out, expand little things, make it nice and palatable for the average guy, etc.

Maybe I just need to read more tutorials already out there - Radiant tutorials?

PS - I can't seem to find any Dark Mod stuff either - textures, models, weapons, ai, anything. Have I failed to install it correctly?

  3. I got it at FilePlanet here:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/165412/160000/fi...hic-3-Teaser-#1

To me it appears quite toned down as far as advanced graphics go, compared to earlier movies from a year ago or so. But it still looks great, and if it's really coming out this fall then I'm VERY excited about that!

I really like the second scene shown in the trailer, with the castle on the mountain hill, with the keep way off in the distant background to the left. I just can't wait to explore this new land!

In the mean time, I have Gothic 2 Gold to play yet. I played Gothic 1 four times and Gothic 2 twice, but never 2 Gold, so I look forward to exploring the new areas and story/characters.

  4. I played it for about 30 min, and while it has it's plusses, I was turned off and decided to just uninstall it.

First of all, this is not an FPS; rather, it's an adventure game. You gather clues and inventory, and solve puzzles using your inventory items and just figuring things out.

I wasn't scared, mainly because since there aren't any weapons of any kind at all I knew that nothing could really be thrown at me, and I was right. There was one point where I found a sort of "trap" and I figured "oh, okay, I'll probably have to use this to kill a monster", and then, sure enough, a monster came from the other room at me and I used the "trap" to get it just in time.

I will say the atmosphere is GREAT! It's dark and musty and just feels right. Pushing and pulling large crates and grabbing other stuff works pretty well, although I prefer the Oblivion aspect that things will dangle straight downward from the point you grabbed them at (in this game, they stay in the exact same position).

I really didn't like the controls at all! I like the idea of manipulating the environment, but it was very awkward and clunky to do some of the simplest things. It's just a tech demo, yes, and a lot of smoothing out the interface needs to happen.

I thought the performance wasn't very good, and VERY inefficient. Each teensy tiny area has to load separately when you go through a door/portal (think 1/5 size of DWIW areas).

The architecture is only square rooms and rectange halls, and the draw distance is very small in the dark, so the game ought to run at something more than an unplayable slideshow with all options turned down to absolute minimum on my GeForce 5650 128mb 1gig ram Pentium M 1.4ghz. When I played on my desktop at home (Athlon XP 2500+, 1gig ram, GeForce 6800GT 256mb) it ran smoothly. So perhaps the game makes heavy use of newer shaders.

My bottom line - worth trying out, good atmosphere, innovative yet clunky gameplay, demanding on your system for not much to show.

  5. Heh, yeah, it will probably just blow over sometime soon :P

I actually like TTLG because most of the folk there (in the Thief forums) are great and have been around doing good Thiefy stuff for years. So, we'll see.

  6. Okay, so apparantly they really REALLY hate anyone mentioning they have Thief and other games for sale, because that thread got deleted, and it pissed me off so I wrote a "that sucks that my thread was deleted, you buttheads" type thread (bad idea, I know), and now I'm freakin' banned!

I know about their "no business promoting" rule to avoid schemers and advertisers from spamming their forums, but a one time mention of some games I'm selling hardly counts. So I guess it was not just that but the combination of that and then my thread complaining about it.

I also know David and GBM personally despise me (due to disagreements over political/economic issues in Comm Chat over there which I abandoned after that), call me awful names and have joined in the "I hate Komag and he sucks" threads, but this seems over the top.

Oh it's not like I've been an integral part of that community for over 5 years, no. It's not like I've spent hundreds/thousands of hours personally working to help keep the Thief community in general alive and strong.

    oh well, screw 'em

  7. Hey I'm selling these used games on eBay, the auctions all close tomorrow:

    Thief The Dark Project

    Gothic 2

Heart of Darkness (similar to Out of This World or Flashback)

If anyone from The Dark Mod wins one or more of them I'll give an extra $2 off the final total (including shipping) per game. :thumb:

EDIT - removed other stuff :)
  8. That's what's so great about it. The fade time is so quick that it barely registers on your conscious mind, but it still generates the impression of a smooth transition.

But that's just it - it was wasted on me becausee I never had the impression of a smooth transition. On the contrary, I always thought it was instant, and so I accepted the instant variety in TDS just fine.

Though I do like the door acceleration and other good Dark Engine features that they did well.

  9. Yeah, the feel in the industry right now seems to be an evolutionary shift to more breadth rather than more direct power/speed.

I think the driving factor is smaller portable devices, such as cell phones, iPods, new mini-laptops, smart-toys, etc. So that a lot of the research of low power consumption/low heat/small size stuff can be applied across a larger market.
