  1. if you could do that it'd certainly be nice. I've no idea if it's possible. the guys from facing hell said they did it, but looks like their dll doesn't work - at least not for me and the other people complaining over at d3world...

  2. here's a last update from myside before going to bed:

the maya md5 importer works - I haven't importet any of oddity's files yet, but I tested it with the swinglight from id and it worked fine - all bones are there and work.

2nd thing is the bad news:

the dll for maya7 doesn't seem to work. I did a search on doom3world and it looks like the error message I get is well known. quite lot people using maya 7 reported about it......looks like we have to get maya6

    goodnight

  3. well as a football fan I'm definitely looking forward to the world cup, eventhough I couldn't get hold of a single ticket. It's really a shame - the worldcup will probably only take place in your country one time in your life, but it's almost impossible to get tickets for a reasonable price :(

    BTW Mac HAPPY BIRTHDAY! :)

  4. em, I don't know how, but somehow the bittorrent thing must have worked, eventhough it complained that it isn't able to connect. I just came across a 211mb rar archive on my HDD called maya6 - unfortunately the archive is corrupted, I probably turned of my machine before the download was finished. so it'd still be nice if you could upload it to the ftp spar :)

  5. Which ports did you open? But it may also be that your provider doesn't forward these ports or does some statefull inspection to prevent P2P. Some do this, I think. I can download it and upload it on FTP for you, if you want.

I opened everything the configuration assistent wanted and even more - TCP and UDP 6881-6889 and TCP + UDP 50000-50100. Would be nice if you could download that for me spar, I'm always have those problems with my router, not only with P2P software, but also with mp-games.

@ spring yes I think that won't be a problem, once I've got the right software and knowledge how to properly rigg a character ;)

@dom yes I'm pretty sure he didn't use lightwave to rig the characters - the rigging tools really suck and there's no plugin or something to export to md5.

  6. The people who made Maya also made Nendo, a smaller program specifically for modelling single objects and rough texturing. Wings 3D is based on Nendo.

oDDity was using Lightwave and had a workflow set up for converting straight into the Doom 3 engine - this is what id software used as well.

I'm used to 3DS primarily, so if you used that I could help you with it, but I don't know about a workflow for exporting to Doom 3 yet. There is one, I just don't know it, never been required to find it.

nope - both oddity and id used maya for exporting the models into doom, since lightwave seems to be quite complicated when it comes to character rigging and animation.

Animated models are quite a bit more complex. The only animation system supported in Doom 3 is skeletal (no vertex animation like in Quake), and the only file format supported is .mb (Maya binary). The files have to be processed using a built in tool to convert the Maya files to .md5mesh and .md5anim files.

thanks dram I'll check this out.

  7. I took a look at oddity's elite guard model with the md5 viewer and it looks like he also assigned a bone at the hip for the sword sheath. I never rigged a character before so this stuff is all pretty new to me, but I have to learn it one day anyway ;) As far as I know maya is the only programm which has a proper md5 exporter - anyone able to share? :)

  8. made some progress on the lowpoly model - it's almost there. only few details for the buckles are still missing

    low_wire1.jpg

ATM it weights at 4570 triangles, but I'll be able to reduce it quite a bit when optimzing the mesh at the end. (for comparison oddity's elite guard has got around 5500 tris)

  9. no I don't have anything against those overlay windows, but they're not as annoying as normal popups imho, since the only open one time per day you enter the website - I think they somehow store your ip.

  10. you don't know the Prater in Vienna? riesenrad.jpg

correct me, if I'm wrong, but I think even Mr. Bond, James Bond was once riding the Prater - or at least it appeared in one of the movies.

I just looked it up - it was The Living Daylights - and now please don't say you don't know the movie -_-

  11. well it's ok. I asked for crits and I appreciate any comments. I think I know what makes the character look a bit strange proportionwise - it's his belt.

Today especially men wear their trousers rather low (no I don't mean hiphoppers) - just take a look at yourself and pull your jeans up to your hip. looks quite funny, right? The belt of the legionary is placed about in the high of his hip and that's probably the reason why it looks uncommon for us.

2nd edit: btw here's one of my references: http://www.xlegio.ru/incoming/legionary_connoly_26_27_s.jpg

just put da vinci's proportions study in front of the wire - I really take your crits seriously as I want to add this to my portfolio later ;)

  12. I think if people don't know he's a Roman Legionary they'll think he fits fine, but for those that do it may be out of place. The problem is that the armour does'nt really fit well into the medieval age, as they mostly use plate or chainmail etc.

that's what I thought as well. for the darkmod version I'll probably remove the middle part of the body armour and give him chainmail + tunic with an insignia.

  13. well I started this one as a portfolio project, but after completing the highpoly model I thought he'd probably also fit into the darkmod world. Of course this wouldn't be a generic guard, but rather some kind of personal bodyguard for aristocrats or something like that - some kind of status symbol for the extra rich, because he's from the southern countries and trained very well.

just tell me what you think. I'll finish him either way though, since he'll be for my portfolio.

  14. Maybe you can look around in an animator or 3D forum? MD5 is IMO rather popular, so there should be some converters to reconstruct it, or some app that can read and play it natively and export to other formats. Don't know wether some forums exist specifically for animators, but I would be surprised it not. :) At least in 3D forums they should know about it.

md5 is only used for the d3 engine, it's not a generic file format. you can see it as an enhancement of the md3 format used in quake3.

  15. Nah, I play it with bloom on but it still looks fairly pretty even without that, so definitely buy it anyway.

When you finally do upgrade it will look even better, but it's comparable to Doom 3 or Thief 3 really.

not really - it looks a lot better than thief3 and I think also better than d3 most times, especially of course the outdoors - at least on my pc. (I'm playing it with HDR and most settings on max)
