  1. Some games I've played or been playing lately:

    -The Dark Mod (duh)

-ArmA 2 with A.C.E. and A.C.R.E. mods (realism mods)

    -Kerbal Space Program

    -X3: Albion Prelude

    -Terraria

    -Drox Operative

-Euro Truck Simulator 2 (don't laugh, this game is much more fun than it sounds!)

    -AI War: Fleet Command

    -Evochron Mercenary

    -Eldritch

    -Bionic Dues

    -Dishonored

-Thief 2: The Metal Age (of course)

    -Deus Ex (yup)

    -Serious Sam HD

-Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition

  2. I might raise a few eyebrows in asking this, but I guess I might as well since it's related to this topic somewhat.

Should unconscious or dead guards be hidden by shadow at all?

I can see a few incentives for not having bodies hidden by shadow:

-It would be somewhat consistent with how player weapons affect stealth. The player gets a shadow stealth penalty for having just a sword or a bow out. The guards are often covered in metal, and even when they are not they are not exactly dressed to be hidden in a dark corner.

-Also, whether a body is "hidden" or not is a bit of an ambiguous question at times, as bodies don't get light gems. If bodies couldn't "shadow stealth" at all and that is made clear from the get go, then it would be harder in some ways but also easier in others as it would be more straightforward and understandable. There wouldn't be as much of this uncertain "is the body hidden by shadow or not" mess and there would be fewer situations where the player may or not feel cheated.

-There's also the fact that some people think the Blackjack is a bit too effective at times, and this would be a nice indirect way to discourage its use that isn't insurmountable. I don't think I've ever run into a situation where I had to Blackjack a guard and at the same time had no way of isolating them from where the other guards patrol.

Of course, there are more than a few things that would make such a change unpopular (see the thread starting post), but I think the idea is interesting enough to be worth thinking about.

  3. I remember listing a some of the ones I liked by difficulty a while back.

Easier missions. These are short and not too difficult:

    -Too Late

    -The Outpost

    -The Caduceus of St. Alban

    Medium, Normal, average difficulty missions:

    -The Knighton Manor

    -Tears of St. Lucia (included)

    -The Builder's Influence

    -Return to the City

    -Flakebridge Monastery (undead)

    Harder missions:

-William Steele: In The North (Warning: Large)

-Old Habits 2 (a remake, should be listed in the downloader as "Old Habits")

    -A Score to Settle

    -The Phrase Book

    -The Lich Queen's Demise (undead)

Some might disagree with said grouping of course.

  4. This is a question for recent new players. How did you end up dealing with "that guard" your first time through in Tears of St. Lucia?

You know which guard I'm talking about. That annoying bastard who stands right around the corner from that wall-mounted lamp in that narrow corridor near the beginning.

Everyone seems to have trouble with this guy, and if you still haven't gotten past him yet maybe you shouldn't be reading this thread (unless you're really having trouble and need spoilers of course).

How did you deal with this guard your first time through?

  5. Spider Pits of the Arachnoid Overmind looks right up your alley I do not recall any spiders from Lords and Legacy, Not an Ordinary Guest, The Crown of Penitence, The Chalice of Kings (although not its sequel, The Heart of Lone Salvation), The Builder's Influence, or The Caduceus of St. Alban (although Bikerdude revises his missions every now and then, and may have snuck a spider or two in there in a more recent version).

The Caduceus of St. Alban does have spiders if I recall right. (I think it's just two though)

  6. Never noticed that. Can you file a tracker entry?

Yeah that's never happened before, will try to reproduce later on.

Ok so I did some more testing with various items and it turns out it's not quite as I thought.

The problem applies to both FlashBombs and Mines. It also doesn't happen with candles or bodies as I initially thought, but instead it seems specific to food.

I'll put a note on the ticket.

  7. What I don't get (yes, I'm playing TDM for years and I still don't get things) is why hitting high on the head is less effective.

If I remember right, the blackjack starts from over your head and swings down in front of you in an arc, and it will "land" on the first physical object it hits.

Maybe aiming high causes it to land short or in the wrong place somehow?

Aiming at the base of the neck seems to work pretty well, but I know you can aim somewhat lower than that if you can space yourself right as I've done that sometimes to avoid hitting overhead obstacles.

  8. I have my use set to "tab", which is nice and handy.

Dang, I should start doing that!

I left it on "U" because at some point it was bound to "U" so I got used to it and just kept using that key!

Maybe we could add a default to put it onto mouse 3, personally it's what I use, pretty sure the engine doesn't mind 3 binds :)

The problem with Mouse 3 (scroll wheel I think?) is that it's "block" by default and, while not used often, does need to be used pretty quickly and with good timing when you do use it.

On the other hand, I don't recall "Tab" having an existing default binding (could be wrong though).

On a related note, it seems there's still that odd issue where if you have a flashbomb selected while holding a body, candle, carrot, or any item with a "use" action available then you'll drop a flashbomb upon hitting "use".

This results in dropping an F-bomb when you don't want to drop an F-bomb, and possibly causing you to drop an F-bomb. :P

  9. I think lockpicks and keys already work that way, though maybe I'm completely misunderstanding this.

I think it would be a better solution to move the default "Use" key to somewhere easier to get to than enter. Maybe somewhere closer to the left hand (WASD) area.

Combining frob and use would be a problem because TDM has objects and items where frob and use actions are available simultaneously (candles come to mind).

  10. May I be rude and ask what everyone does with these phenomenal speeds I can only dream at?

Honestly, usually not much. From what I've experienced most everyday ordinary downloads don't seem to benefit that much past the first 2 or 3 Mbp/s, unless you're doing several downloads at once. That's not to say there's no benefit, some downloads go faster if you have a good connection to them and if you're doing a lot stuff at once then you're more likely to see the benefits, but for your ordinary everyday use you're more likely to be limited by something not on your end.

I've had some very fast and some very slow connections, and from what I've experienced most consistently working connections over 2 or 3 Mbp/s tend to "feel more or less the same" as far as ordinary everyday use and gaming goes.

On the other hand, uploading stuff and hosting servers is different. In those cases you're much more likely to see the difference. Uploads do go a lot faster, and many more people will be able to connect to your game server without slowing things down.

Up higher than down. Is this real life?

That was taken at "peak traffic time".

It sometimes gets weird depending on usage as this is from an apartment building in an urban area.

This is what early afternoon ("not peak usage") looks like:

  11. So I went ahead and did a little "raw gameplay" teaser using a few minutes of Old Habits II.

It's definitely on the slow and not flashy side, but I figured it would be nice to have something raw and straight to go along with the trailer. It has some minor spoilers, but hopefully nothing too much (I purposefully avoided the more important areas).

  12. Just a side-note, I recently did a complete re-install and I don't see this mission on the in-game downloader (unless it's named something different and I'm just totally missing it), so someone might want to check on that.

Wait nevermind, it is on there but there's a different issue. When it's in the "Download Missions" list it shows up as the old "Old Habits" and has the old mission details (Old Habits 1 release date and that sort of thing).

After it downloads it shows up in the mission list correctly as "Old Habits 2".

  13. The running sway maybe.

When you run in Dishonored it's more of a side-to-side sway with shorter and more frequent steps, in The Dark Mod it's more of an up-and-down with longer and less frequent steps.

The side-to-side motion and shorter steps in Dishonored feels like it implies more of a "ready" or "tactical" running posture where you're slightly hunched over and your knees are slightly more bent. The up-and-down motion and longer steps in The Dark Mod feels like it implies a more upright running posture, the sort that you would do if you're running a marathon or jogging.

  14. How might you feel about adding more missions by default in addition to St. Lucia or maybe offering them together in some kind of "starting mission pack".

I'm not entirely sure what would be appropriate for such a thing.

Perhaps a sampler each mission "type" though I guess that's very vague. Maybe one more open-ended "heist" FM, a more linear and story-heavy FM, a good puzzle or unusual FM, and so on.

Either that or stick with adding a couple "core" missions that represent what would be "normal" TDM play to get the player better started.

  15. One of my Thief 2 installations is the Steam version and I do have the unofficial patch installed on it right now.

I haven't had to move that one to a different location so far. I just disabled automatic updates and it has behaved just fine thus far (and I'm not sure if that's needed either). Even starting it from Steam works fine with the unofficial patch.

I don't currently have a Steam version of Thief Gold installed (the one I'm using right now is from a physical disk), but I'm guessing it should work fine as well.
