  1. Thanks, GameDevGoro, your explanations really hit home what I was hoping for in the game. One thing I have heard is that there is some sort of random side-quest generator that artificially keeps the quest list filled, so there's no real "end-game". But is there a point where the quests it generates start becoming repetitious cookie-cutter copies of one's you've already done, with just the elements changed around?

Yeah, you can farm vegetables and chop wood for money if you want, or you can jump right into battle.

OK, this intrigued me, so I had to search it on youtube. Best I could find was

showing a player "harvesting" cabbage, onions, and potatoes. I'm guessing the game doesn't go into the detail of tilling, planting, fertilizing, etc...
  2. I have a few questions about the main website's Missions page:

    - Is it comprehensive of all the DM missions available for download?

    - Does it get updated pretty instantly with new releases?

Reason I ask is that sometimes there are gaps of several weeks. If it's just circumstances of timing, then I understand. I just don't want to be missing out on some good missions since that's the only spot I check.

  3. Hi all,

Whenever I can tear myself away from research and flume experiments, I regularly enjoy a DarkMod mission. The 'free' aspect sells me, and the dedication of the team to keep up with frequent updates is refreshing. Now that I've been able to delegate my workload more, I am starting to look into this barrage of good games from 2011. I've just played through DXHR, and now all my friends and colleagues talk about is Skyrim.

I generally play games with a more patient, thorough approach, and dislike games that demand a hectic pace. As Thief fans I think you all are better equipped to tell me whether Skyrim can be played with a modus operandi similar to Thief.

  4. Hey Bikerdude,

Fantastic mission! Kept me interested with its complexity and its approach to each piece of the entire mission.

I have a couple questions. I'm at the point..

where I have the remains plus framed the inventor, so I'm on my way out. But before I end the mission, I haven't figured out two things:

    1. There was an apartment on the city streets with a drunkard. I read his note next to him while he slept, and was keeping an eye out for his vault key throughout the mission, but haven't found it. Where might it be?

    2. Looking for a key to open a safe in the lower level cells of the Cathedral as well.

Thanks again for the great mission, and the others you've done as well. Kick ass ^_^

  5. Same here. Spending more time outdoors with the spouse on my time off and less on games. Finding myself being pickier and more critical, and commenting on how much these days on how "this new game X is just a retread of that old game Y with a new skin and a new *ahem* plot". Only games I've acquired this year are Mirror's Edge and the Galactic Civilizations 2 add-ons. Playing old games I already have and waiting for the inevitable price drop just seems more prudent.

  6. ...and that small detail is going to be improved because we all don't like the steps either!

Heck I'd be happy if someone went through the config ini files and commented each variable,

ie. //this is the value for the volume of running footfalls

    seta pm_stepvol_run "8"

  7. NVidia 8800 GT or GTS are quite cheap now, and still very good. You can jump up one notch with the 8800 GTX, though that will be a tad more expensive.

All three should work fine with dark mod. I personally have a 8800 M on my notebook, and an 8800 GTS 768mb on my PC back in Australia (moved to Czech Republic two weeks ago).

I'd recommend avoiding the eVGA manufactured ones. One of my computers is on its third eVGA 8800GTS, after the first two died within a year each, and I never overclocked them at all and both regularily cleaned them and gave them plenty of space inside the CPU. Alternatively, the BFG GTX260 on my primary computer hasn't so much as sneezed.

  8. What do you expect from a movie tie-in game. Shoehorning the movies acts into a game is a recipe for failure. I don't know why most game companies simply take certain characters and the universe and make something of their own, ala Butcher Bay.

Most games made these days always seem to fail in one major aspect of their design, be it gameplay, execution of story (be it a simple or complex one), art direction, technical. Many fail in two or more categories.

That's not to say there are not quality games made these days. I just played through Dead Space, and it nailed the execution of its story, borrowing elements from The Thing/Event Horizon/System Shock 2. It was technically competent, using a holographic projection interface, and the art direction fit the setting using industrial space grunge. Yet I'd be hard pressed to say the gameplay was passable, it was limited and got repetitive as most shooters do.

  9. Looking from the outside in, I've never seen the team devolve into flaming and childish bickering ever to the public. These guys are so dedicated and intelligent that the worst I've ever seen is repetitious arguments for feature inclusion, to which they are always civil.

Speaking along these lines, whatever happened to oDDity?

  10. Every gamer with a grain of worthwhile criticism on this particular topic should be exposed, nay, forced to play Galactic Civilizations 2, as it quite possibly has the widest array of problems & choices for a game developed in the last five years. When creating your galaxy, there is a kind of pseudoscale of problem – choice, based on how many victory options you enable.

  11. Releasing St Lucia was an excellent coup, should shed some time off the release window and foster community growth, and hopefully increase post-release extra functionality.

Neat little video. I like the bit of coughing at the end. It's little touches like that that show you guys care about the project above & beyond expectations.

Any idea when the next mission release comes down the pipe?

  12. In essence, we're totally screwed. Enjoy the peace and security while it lasts, people.

Yep, cuz even if every major nation takes immediate drastic action, there is still a long lag time for the atmosphere to make adjustments.

Anyways, I think I got you another sale, convincing my brother (who happened to have intro'd me to the original MOO) by using the "it's only $10" argument.
