  1. I negligently left my computer uncleaned for a year. So yesterday my monitor started to glitch on me, distorting the screen whilst I was playing Mass Effect. Hoping it wasn’t the monitor, I cracked open the CPU and beheld the dust bowl that caked the CPU and the vidcard. I blasted those clean using compressed air.

After cleaning it of dust thoroughly, I was surprised that not only did the processing run smoother, but the framerate was easily on avg. 5-10 fps greater.

Being less technically knowledgeable than an educated computer geek leads me to ask some general maintenance questions:

    - How often should one clean out their CPU innards?

    - Are liquid cooling systems worth the trouble? Are they dangerous should they leak (beyond the obvious water on circuits)?

    - How about getting an improved CPU fan. Is that worth the price for the performance improvements it would garner?

    - Do any of these options contribute to safely overclocking to higher degrees?

    - Are these newer, meatier CPU’s (duals & quads) and vidcards (hamburger sized PCI-E’s) attracting more dust than older models did in the past?

  2. Hmmm, I guess not. I'd take the money, but having my name on the credits would be best, and a written reference is completely useless for my line of work.

Good luck with the game though. I love the Master of Orion feel you've sunk into it.

  3. This doesn't surprise me, it's becoming tradition. By logical extension of the quick-buck mentality, creative plagiarism will be followed by artistic plagiarism will be followed by technical plagiarism......

Take take stuff from all those sources and to meld it into one seamless project, that's mind boggling genius

Yep. We all know a creation completely done by popular consensus works every time, and that a single, unflinching vision is the root of failure. Heck, in this case you don't even need your own vision, just composite pieces of someone else's.

  4. I loved Mass Effect on 360, looking forward to replaying with the mini-expansion added in, currently re-reading the prequel novel and looking forward to the transition novel coming out next month. I'm also currently playing Tomb Raider Anniversary on 360, great fun that one

I am totally absorbed within PC Mass Effect, to the point that anal retention caused me to spend the first several hours nitpicking the facegen settings for my Shepard.

How is the Relevation novel? I've heard decent things, but only when compared to other videogame novels, which isn't saying much. As science fiction literature, does it stand up as great? Does it at least fill out Captain Anderson's character enough to make you really care about him?

  5. Yep. Ghost your drive on another hd, then update it every so often with new prog's by hot-swapping. Then all you would need to do is copy over files when Windows neccessitates a failure, or you feel performance has declined.

  6. Nah, people been getting sick all the way back since Wolfenstein, heck even some people threw up in the arcades with the old 80's vector Star Wars 3D movement. It's just a vertigo thing, doesn't always work the same with people

And a painful barrier for interesting people in FPP games. Is there a way to relieve equilibrium balance disorders?

  7. That's just a general "use" animation the AI is playing, it doesn't provide any feedback to the AI yet. Of course, we have a lot of plans to improve this first incarnation of "elevator awareness", as this is just the beginning - for now we are following the 80:20 rule. :)

That's what I was expecting. Thanks for the response :)

Has the elevator AI interaction been tested with different alert states? Will a highly-alerted AI keep it's alert state, and not have it broken or sent back to a regular patrol state, after completing the elevator circuit in search for the player character they've spotted?

  8. Man, those are some pretty square hairlines

The elevator AI functionality looks good, but is there no collision detection between their finger & the button? Looks odd pointing in mid-air.

The rats look excellent. I doubt this is important at all, but it makes me wonder: Are you going to include any cat & mouse interaction? Or is that something too low on the list, something that modders will need to include AI scripting for themselves?
