  1. I just meant praxis is *also* a term in English too that's a little different than our word "practice", so I thought it worth pointing out IMO that he means (with the German word "praxis") what we mean with the word "practice". He doesn't mean what *we* mean by "praxis" when we use that in English (unfortunately heavily vulgarized from its original meaning), which has all this extra baggage about Heideggerian authenticity and Marxist materiality and blah blah blah...

Language is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Sometimes I genuinely marvel that any of us are able to understand each other at all. (When I say 'us', I mean, not just on this forum. I mean any human beings, anywhere.)

What was this thread about again? Oh yeah. Hitting people on the head. Jolly good. Carry on. As you were. (etc etc)

  2. This is probably a really rubbish analogy, but I'll offer it anyway:

    Blackjacking in T1/T2 = draughts

Blackjacking in T3 = noughts & crosses (I'm a fan of T3, BTW - it introduced me to the Thief universe and I'll be forever grateful - but it really does hand BJing to you on a plate)

    Blackjacking in TDM = chess

TDM was designed to be 'harder' than Thief. That's the way it is. It doesn't make it 'elitist', just more challenging.

Doesn't mean chess is 'better' than draughts, either. Just a different game.

  3. Out of those number 2 is the best candidate.

+1, but after a quick clickaround on the website, I think this one may have some potential too: http://www.jsayles.com/music/4hands.mp3

A lot of his work sounds quite formal/regal, e.g. Elizabethan court music, which is probably where a lot of it comes from, and which could be useful if anyone's planning a TDM version of the

    :P.

He says he's not a professional guitar player, but he's pretty darned talented. I thought it had been MIDI-sequenced on a computer at first  .

  4. My 2¢: -

    - Posting these kind of videos here on the forums is fine, just an extension of the 'Silly Screenshots' thread. They may even sometimes be helpful in giving mappers advice on how to avoid the glitch in the first place.

    - FWIW, I thought that, up until the glitch, the second video made the TDM AI look pretty good - they're quite relentless in their pursuit, and you're not completely safe even if they can't reach you. Be nice to see it in higher resolution with some sound. (Were the videos meant to have no sound or is it my settings?)

    - I assume the 'glitch' in the third video was the second poker player not noticing his team mate had been KO'd? :P If so, I'd say that's a gameplay issue (that TDM shares with the Thief series AFAIK) rather than a glitch, but other opinions are available :) .

  5. Thanks ST - I found the stash pretty easily once I went back into the mission

I had just missed that little side turning

    and I've just finished it.

Voted Good/Average/Good - voted average for gameplay only because of the city area - even though it was pretty huge, it felt like there wasn't much to do except wander around rather aimlessly until I blundered across something. The police station area was much better in terms of gameplay - just think the city area could have done with more 'focus'. However, like Melan, even though the city layout was a bit rectangular, I thought you had put a good level of detail in and made it look good.

So overall a good piece of work and a (mostly) enjoyable 2 hours & 45 minutes of gameplay. Many thanks!

  6. Really enjoyed the police station - straightforward but satisfying, with enough info via the readables to keep me pointed in the right direction. The only actual glitch I came across was when

I blundered into the main entrance hall and got spotted by the guard behind the desk - he came into the corridor on low alert, couldn't find me and then sat back down. In the corridor. In mid air. :)

Momentarily felt like I had come to a dead end in the sewers but once I realised I could

    climb those pipes

    I was away!

I'm now in the city and unfortunately I'm finding it harder to keep motivated - I have no idea where I'm meant to be going and I feel like I've gone around the whole area and all I've found so far is

a balcony I could climb up to

but all there was just a bottle to get, and that was it. (I have a feeling I need to find some rope arrows - if I was meant to pick some up in the station, am I now stuffed? ) I

I'll keep at it - if I still can't find anything I'll read the reply to rustmite's post above :) and see if that helps.

  7. Here are some WIP shots of the work that's been done on the updated version of the Training mission that will be part of the 1.08 update, enjoy.

The original training mission looked great, but these look way better and I can't really work out why. New textures? Different lighting? No biggie, just interested.

The second pic (the aerial view of the archery range) - did you get that view using noclip, or can you actually climb up there? (*spidernoob drool*) Love the moonlight on the spire.

  8. What if we removed swordfighting completely

I'm not a fan of hand-to-hand swordfighting cuz I'm rubbish at it :(, but I don't think there's any point in taking it out of TDM (like RP says, the mapper can do this for a specific mission if he/she wants). There are plenty of other options to allow the player to fight 'dirty', and actually, my favourite way of fighting dirty involves zombies and the sword:

there's nearly always somewhere where you can stand just out of reach of the zombies and then lean forward and whack em

The downside is, it doesn't work with guards cuz they just start chucking rocks at your head.

The upside is, it works with zombies.

    Which is good.

    Hate zombies.

  9. Decals are just textures that have transparent sections. There's nothing special about making that actual image; the shader needs a few special keywords, but you can look at other decals and copy them.

Cool. I'll try to have a play around with them when I have the time (and energy) (darn these warm muggy nights  ).
  10. @simleN00b: Just to make sure you don't miss out on some computer gaming history... :)
That does bring back some fleeting memories - unfortunately I couldn't play it for long as I'd get blinding headaches if I played for than 10 minutes :(. Ditto with this one:

    post-9265-0-20536800-1344175644_thumb.png

(To go massively OT for a mo: The lower the resolution in FPS games, the harder my brain finds it to cope - like I say, the above two made me feel physically sick after ten minutes play; Half Life, Dark Project & Metal Age gave me slight but persistent headaches when I played them (but Seven Sisters and the Rocksborough series barely bothered me), while Deadly Shadows and TDM give me no problems at all (except maybe for the occasional crawl through a air-ventaltion shaft). It seems to be very repetitive textures that kick it off.)

Thanks for the memories anyway, STiFU. And I'd like to say you've done some seriously good airbrush work on your avatar :).

  11. I have literally just 'finished off' GladOS. Loved her final song. :P

Shame the stuff wasn't as great on P2 as it was in P1...
I started Portal 2 while I was still working my way through Portal, and - yeah...the P2 AI is OK. But it's a letdown after GladOS.

EDIT: I see from Wikipedia that GLaDOS does turn up in P2. B)

  12. Loving all the little (and not-so-little) insights into people's choices here.

    My avatar should be self-explanatory

Heh. Not to me it ain't. (See my reply to STiFU above.) Fortunately there's always Tineye to fall back on. :P

    Heretic!

Ooh, believe me, not knowing SS is one of the least of my gaming heresies...

@Sotha: Yeah, I like those would-be reassuring but actually sinister (in a funny kind of way) 'all powerful' AI's too. My current fave is the one in Portal. Utterly deranged, in a 'please like me and you'll get some cake even though I intend to destroy you' kind of way.

  13. I must affiliate STiFU, I thought it was a photo taken by yourself

Well, in a way, it is me - I had messed about with a couple of other avatars, but wasn't really happy with them. Melan's (previous B&W) avatar inspired me to look for some old film pix, and as soon as I saw that Vampyr photo, I thought "That's me! Playing TDM!" But no - in RL, I'm older...jowlier...more grizzled.... :P

Well I guess, both questions regarding my avatar are unnecessary to answer...

      I don't know what your avatar is.

Sorry STiFU - I'm not a hardened gamer so a lot of the avatars here are completely foreign to me. I genuinely only discovered what Sotha's avatar is last week while watching one of FenPhoenix's System Shock 2 videos .

Some really great little stories so far (but "I just liked it" is a perfectly valid answer too). And RPG's avatar always gives me a little smile. :)

  14. This may be a non-starter but I'm quite nosey interested in what quite a few of the avatars on display actually are, and why you've chosen them for this forum. I'll start:

My avatar is: a still from the film Vampyr (1932 German vampire film, IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023649/. I may get round to adding it to Melan's 'Thiefy movies' thread at some point, cos parts of it are quite, er, thiefy).

I chose it because: it totally captures the wide-eyed, peering-over-my-shoulder, "What the heck was that?" feeling I can get from playing TDM.

    Anyone else?

  15. I would like to learn so I can make the odd texture now and then.. there has got to be an idiots guide somewhere... :-D

I managed to work out the basics of creating the various image files from the basic textures tutorial and parts of Renzatic's tutorials (the bits that I understood anyway). The hardest part I found was getting the material file to work - I've got a breakdown of what worked for me in a PDF on my minus account if it's any help.

Tempted to say that if I can work it out, anyone can, but if that was true, everyone on this forum would be able to do EVERYTHING. :P

  16. Those blackjack gameplay vids...I have no idea what I'm supposed to get from them.

I think I'd have found the video much more helpful than reading the gameplay wiki when I was starting. Seeing what "Don't get too close" means (rather than just reading it) would have saved me huge amounts of blackjacking frustration in my early TDM days .

I see the player blackjacking people, but it doesn't translate the feel, and maybe it's framerate or the speed of the animation, but I can't see the impact sites or sense the zones, so it just looks like action/movement/action.

Aren't all videos just 'action/movement/action'? Sorry if I'm being dense, but I don't think watching any game video will 'translate the feel' of what it's like to actually play it.

  17. All of them look really good.

Many thanks - v. encouraging. If anyone does find a use for them in an FM, I'm not particularly bothered about a credit but I'd be dead chuffed to see some WIP screenshots.

You are no longer noob on texturing. Pick a new nick

Again, many thanks; it's just that when I look at something like Renzatic's tutorials on tiling, I know I've still got a lot to learn. (Plus, you haven't seen me trying to build something in DR. :P)

But thanks (again) - really appreciate the encouragement!
