  1. Some friends of mine commented that this looks similar to skyrim, and I guess they have a point. You're swinging a sword and casting spells in first person inside a dungeon. But this got me thinking about it.

I enjoyed skyrim and all but I always felt the combat was not a lot of fun. In fact, the fun in skyrim, at least to me, comes from the whole package but not from its individual moving parts (sneaking for the sake of stealth isn't fun, the same goes for combat etc). And I guess what made me excited about this video is that my brain is reading it like "look, it's skyrim but with a combat that looks fun like in dark souls". Now, as anyone reading that dark souls thread can tell, I'm not a huge fan of Dark souls, but I am a huge fan of its combat system! and it's very clear what makes it so appealing to me, it's much more dependent on skill and focus than character sheet. In Skyrim (and any other TES) I could very well create a bot to play the game for me and just adjust the character sheet and gear. It would be like a management game with fantasy rpg... this is actually sounding like an interesting idea, but I digress.

Anyway, what do you guys think? is this a poor man's skyrim, a first person dark souls kind of combat game or something entirely different?

  2. I would totally buy this now but I discovered it doesn't run on my pc so I'll pass for now. I'm sure you'll enjoy, just forget it's a sequel to our favorite game :D

  3. I used to prefer physical. The usual arguments about safety of having an actual disc that is yours etc, against the cloud based copy that is in god knows what pc, and this company could die at any moment and you would lose your games!

When I realized that pretty much every game I ever purchased in physical copy was damaged or lost those arguments fell off. The chances of losing or damaging a physical copy, at least for me, is much higher than whatever risk bundled with digital copies.

  4. And I just quit playing this game again. For the same reason I quit the first time: requires too much dedication. Play, play, play, die, repeat. Last run I figured the pattern of the boss, next time I'll surely beat him but I'm not compelled to go through all that again.

I guess it doesn't appeal to everyone. Some people will get a higher rush the harder it is to beat something, but I get the exact same feeling with or without all the trouble. When I beat the boss all I get is a feeling of "all right, finally. Can we get on with this now?".

But for everyone who enjoys this game I have a recommendation:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN9mKr_O2og

It has a very similar nature. Each time you play you learn something new about the current world, a new pattern etc, and you get practice. It feels very much like dark souls and it's also a damn good game. And I also quit playing it for the exact same reason.

  5. How weird. I started playing Dark Souls today and was totally thinking "I think I played this game before!". Now I found a topic here and decided to know what people are talking about it. What a terrible memory, I even started this thread myself.

Anyway, I'm giving this game another shot (I didn't know it was another shot until now! I thought I was trying the thing for the first time).

  6. My physics are very rusty but if I had to prove that equation I'd definitely use Gauss's law (which is basically one of the Maxwell's equations -- only not in a vacuum) which states that div E = density of charge / epsilon. But if you use its integral form flux = charge / permittivity you can deduce the continuity of the tangential component of E at an interface. I remember being asked to prove it once, if I had to do it again I'd integrate on an infinitesimally small surface at the interface using the E wave in its exponential form: the k_x components get thrown away, the density of charge eliminated on both sides of the equation and the wave numbers come out of the exponential upon integration. Something like that.

That's it. Get Maxwell's equations on integral form and choose the volume and contour that simplifies the integrals.

  7. I played a couple of times the advanced edition but I couldn't get into it again, like I did the first time. I think I played the original too much :P

edit: I don't mean that it's worse now! I'm just burnt out of playing FTL

  8. I have no idea about how to be a better entertainer, so I can't help you with that. But let's play videos can be entertaining for several different reasons, some are because of a funny narrator saying funny things, others are groups of people discussing (yelling usually) random subjects while playing. I tend to enjoy comments from game developers or simply someone interested in game dev with insightful comments. So if I were trying to create an audience for my videos I guess I'd try and find in what way I can be entertaining. If you look at my videos you'll see that being completely silent is my best move (or I'm not trying to create an audience).

Anyway, great to see more TDM let's play! :)
