  1. I actually felt that the arrows moved a good bit faster than t1/2, and had a more satisfying feel to them, but thats just me.

As for the 'drop' ability in DR, it would make life a whole lot better for me!, even if its just a basic entity/brush origin -> first horizontal surface, anything is better than manual! ;) I really would love to work on DR, but I have this srong dislike for gtk ;/

  2. I'd spend a few days polishing it up a bit, theres some nice stuff in the map, but its a bit too raw and needs some shining to show things through nicely (no one digs perfect square holes through rock with a pick! :P) - and eh, why not enter nothing to lose if you think its up to the challenge :)

One ting I did notice was that there are a lot of areas that seem very crowded, the pub for example could use a bit more space to move around in, specially as the guards hear everything around that area. Some areas there was just a lack of scale, but its not the end of the world and easily adjustable for the most part. A great showing for the amount of time!

  3. Ummm, I dont see why it would be black screening, at worst it should revert to vesa without a driver. Looks like you've managed to half install/remove it.

    • I'd go get drivercleaner or whatever its called these days
    • go to device manager, uninstall the display devices there
    • then run drivercleaner and delete whatever remains.
    • since you're on XP, go to system32, delete all the files starting with ati*.* (yes, so long as they are only starting with ati its safe)
    • then nuke the ReinstallBackups folder in system32, it keeps backups of drivers and automatically installs them, which is somewhat really annoying.
    • reboot and try normal mode

Failing that, I have no idea.

  4. Alas, tried a fresh install and download, still no joy in Windows... Managed to get it to run under Debian though, so all is not lost. Was hoping to use Windows for the DarkMod though, DarkRadiant might be a bit of a pain to run under Debian. There look to be quite a list of packages to install to compile it myself, not sure if I can get away with using one of the Ubuntu repositories on a Debian system. Might try it though - what's the worst that could happen?

    Many thanks :)

I've seen this happen with a freshly installed + roe + patched doom3, somehow it was using the wrong gamex86.dll.

If I recall correctly it tries to use the doom3 default one if there is some message it wants to give you or if it wants to tell you to validate your CD key.

    You can try :

    uninstall doom

    manaully delete the doom directory

    install doom (dont install roe)

run doom and put key in etc, make sure it works

    patch doom

    install tdm

    -

make a copy of what has been done so far.

launch tdm and mess around with settings, if you can launch it try recreate the issue.

if you can recreate it - please let us know, if it doesnt do anything... well you wasted 10 min :P

(before doing all of this, you could also try renaming the gamex86.dll in the 'base' directory to something else, I remember fixing a friends install a while back)

  5. I've been playing around, getting into the whole mapping thing and using Thieves as a testbed, however doing things to expand it realistically I thought was the best way to gain a realistic skillset and learn the functions etc, as such I've made pretty good headway into expanding the mission, tho I havent quite worked out a story etc, I've made it a bit more challenging, better looking and things like AI a bit less robotic. Working on pimping out the guild area a bit more at the moment, but we'll see what comes of it :)

  6. I had the same problem in the internal SVN version. I had to extract the gamex86.dll out of tdm_game01.pk4 by hand (by naming the pk4-> .zip temporarily. If that doesn't work, I'd also recommend running tdm_updater, you might have some corrupt texture packs.

Just confirming having seen this happen, using a working installs gamex86.dll fixed the issue. However it might not be your issue.

  7. Someone else posted the same issue around release. I cant remember if it was resolved but I do seem to remember a pretty old card too. I would suggest updating your drivers if they arnt already. Else have a dig around from just after launch, remember a screenshot or two just like that.

Looking around and tripped over this bit of info :

IMPORTANT: I noticed in the "Video" settings, if I set "Interactive Shading" to "High Quality" (which is currently the default setting in the release version), a lot of brushes start getting large white-out video artifacts (You'll see them in the Training Mission sparring area). You can get rid of them by switching Interactive Shading to "Standard". This problem was also reported by someone with a 6800GT (TelMarine, but SneaksieDave, also with a 6800 didn't report it, whatever that tells you.)

So you will want to try that if drivers dont help!

  8. I have the following set up:

A wall with an archer patrolling ontop of it, he faces towards the streetlights a few feet below waiting for you to step into the light pools. Once he spots you he starts to fire, he aims the bow but then throws the arrow as if he was throwing a bottle, the arrow moves at what I would say is 'arrow speed', faster than 'bottle speed', the aim is usually good either hitting upper body or head if you're moving slowly. There is no way for the AI to pathfind to the street level (should he not have a bow etc), which I think might influence this.

He does have a bow, and a quiver (which I only just figured out you could liberate arrows from, awesome ;))

    Now with screenshot goodness

  9. Don't use Devmap. Just map <mapname>, all cheats are enabled.

For your texture issue you can use the Naturaly command in the texture tool. Also if you need better alignment you can use the Surface Inspector.

Ah fair enough, just used to devmap, but map seems to work as expected.

The problem with textures is specific to the render, they look as if everything is environment mapped with their texture, so when you move the camera around they distort and react... somewhat annoying when trying to do texture work, ok for construction tho.

I've also noticed archers throw arrows at you, is this intended? Im sure I've been shot by one before who wasnt just throwing the arrows at insane velocity :P

  10. This is just a littel mission, but I´m kind of stuk at the moment as when I make the objectivs I can´t test the mission? it dmap´s ok but when I wan´t to play it DarkMod giv´s a error about not finding the map file???

you can try using 'devmap <mapname like you gave dmap>' from console, just for super simple testing, it wont help with the objective issue etc.

I would try unpacking one of the released FM's and looking at how things are done there if you cant get things working from the info on the wiki :)

  11. So, I decided to start messing around in DR, just using Thieves as a testbed for what it can do etc (since I have never really mapped like this)...

Anyhoo - node link lines pic

The 3/4 lines that link to the cursor all come from ai path corners, I am not too sure why they want to hug the crosshair, but wherever I am on the map they will surely follow. I made sure everything is linked correctly, as the problem exists even after reloading the map. The lines also show us going towards an asymptote on the orth view.

Another minor issue is that the textures often become... distrorted

I always get an error about a chest lid being outside of a valid AAS node, however it seems to be quite happy where it is. This does not stop the map loading.

After making a number of new changes, I have to dmap the map, if I devmap a first time the map wont start, it will just return to main menu, a 2nd or 3rd try will almost instantly start the map. Not 100% sure on what its doing, not too much of a problem as it works first time if I had to start it normally.

Other than that - excellent work on DR, greebo and co :3

  12. Hey, do you have a creative card?

I've had the strangest issues with sound in doom3 and darkmod on my x-fi, similar to what you describe. Disabling EAX4 seemed to help, but disabling all the 3d cmss(in the x-fi panel) or whatever they call it seemed to fix everything right up. I havent enabled EAX4 again, but I expect it might work correctly now.

I think creative and id spent some time doing 'special' thingss with the sound, but in the end drivers and patches might have broken them (as I said, similar issues in vanilla d3, but less consistently)

  13. Actually detail textures aren't a bad idea. I know it's possible in IDtech4; etc etc

Im sure I can sort the defs out and such, I have a bunch of old detail textures from UT2k4 and HL1 work, should be good enough to test.

Just need to come up with a decent test map for different areas etc as I am not so sure how lighting etc works with them, hopefully they dont react at all and leave it up to the bump/specular etc :) If anyone has such a map, let me know.

Now, to learn about DR as I seem to be all feet with it!

  14. If I have any crits, it's that the ground texture is a bit blurry up close; but that's a hard problem to solve without creating ugly patterning at a distance.

Im not 100% sure, but wouldnt applying a detail texture to the ground material for 'up close' but allow the distance to not get aliased by overly high res textures?

I really havent worked much with any iD engine, so not 100% on how they do things.

Besides that, shots are looking great :)

What area is TDM most lacking in textures atm? I've noticed theres a need for some roofing tiles! ;) - wondering if any of the new mappers had noticed stuff lacking that I could get to work on now that I'm free for a few months.

  15. I had the issue on an X1900 in Theifs Den, Saint Luci and TDM 1.0 are perfect however.

Which is the first version of the ATI drivers you installed? You can try uninstall the driver, restarting into safe mode, removing the driver with drivercleaner or such then try installing the 9.10's or whatever the latest is - I do remember someone having this on 9.9... I think!

If only they would hurry up and release Rage so that they can get to the claimed source release, such a weak excuse :/

  16. I would upgrade the video card but make sure you got a beefy power supply with at least 4 +12v rails. Otherwise you will run into trouble and some of your components might be fried.

Do not get anything less than a 9800GT or GTX or you can opt for an ATI 4870. I recommend the Sapphire one which is only available on Ebay and less than 100$. I got one and it's good. The only downside is that it's big and really loud.

The ampage on the 12V rail/s is what matters most, its not the number of rails - in fact most powersupplies that offer multiple rails are quite bad, ideally you would always want a single rail with insane ampage, eliminating virtual rails etc. Just some food for thought... or something.

As for branding, ATi encourage people to use the reference design, though some will change the reference cooler, the boards 95% of the time are exactly the same as other brands (they do change bios stuff however, dropping voltage sometimes if they think its excessive, changing fanspeeds for different coolers, but nothing hectic), if you want a quieter card I would suggest looking for one with a large radial cooler rather than the long blower fan which Sapphire etc come with as they use reference boards + coolers on their non-speciality cards.

  17. Server '08 is linux I take it. I don't know what drivers I found, there were no officially supported linux drivers (or they were official but not supported), but it required command line stuff that confused the hell out of me.

Nah, was talking about Windows Server, however, the card is supported under ALSA and OSS (OSS support is a bit iffy, but for many it works perfectly).

Its quite strange that they 'opened' the driver, but the driver is all confidential and propriatary, uses a lot of magic numbers etc, if only people would rather release documentation and datasheets.

  18. I'd just hit a newer gfx card, ATI wins hands down on bang for buck, you should be able to get quite a decent card with that.

As for OS, might as well head to W7 x64.

I didnt really read about the soundcard issues, im running Server 08 with the same card, it had a few issues but I grabbed the PAX drivers, didnt expect them to actually help, but they installed and the card is 100% perfect now, no idea why, but there were millions of issues on the official driver.

If your ram is decent, you can get some hefty overclocks out of that CPU without much heat/effort, well worth an afternoon tinkering about.
