  1. I just made the entity class atdm:movable_base as the wiki suggests. If anyone can think what that mission with the movable brick is i'll load that up and investigate.
  2. Thanks for the help. Planks now added and looking good. With regard to the boxes (!) they are small dark grey cubes. I didn't do any collision models ? Should I have. I was just following the wiki and I think I did convert them to func_static first. Added the sounds, added weight and density. If like to know what I did wrong in case I need to create one in future. It's all a steep learning curve at the moment but I'm psyched to produce an immersive map.
  3. I'd like a plank of wood to be movable. I've looked through the entities but can't find one. Am i missing it somewhere ? If i create custom movable items, could someone clarify what the wiki says. I create the brush, texture it, add the atdm_movable_base entity and add the spawnargs listed in the 'simple brush movables' http://wiki.thedarkmod.com/index.php?title=Moveables When i map i just get what look like small crates ?? No plank. they move and sound OK though. I've missed something simple i'm sure.
  4. Good to know that's used alot - i thought it made sense as i have a single house and its tricky to see whats going on once some models have been added ! Out of interest - how long would something like ws1_in the north take to produce, start to finish ?
  5. You are right of course. I know that there's no substitute for doing things yourself, especially when learning. I'm a keen puppy at the moment !! Anyway, thanks for the info. It's a pity you can't take the models apart as I'm sure there's more complicated ones that would enable you to achieve your look in less time - time is precious ! I imported WS1 in the north map to have a look - crikey there's alot that makes up a great map. Sooo much to learn. Many thanks to all for quick replies. Lastly, if I produce a new model (in my case a well) how can I package it and save from DR to share with others ? How do I share ? Thanks
  6. Is it possible to import a model and then break it out into component parts for further editing ? I'd like to use a well and be able to go down it but the model won't allow this. If i could break it apart i could either make it bigger or make it look broken in some way. It will save time rather than designing from scratch. thanks,
  7. I'm sure us new folk will appreciate that. It'll kick start our mapping knowledge and enable us to make leaps ahead.
  8. It should look good. I'm interested in learning what it takes to get a good looking map, specifically a house in this case. EDIT - And i'll be sure to check out the maps in DR - thanks!
  9. Yes i've seen those. I was thinking of something a bit more involved. So as i said, take a peasants house for example, something simple. Not all the rooms need to be done for the tut but the outside and say one, a bedroom or study. How soon do you start details and to what level. I'm interested in what others do, so show us how you would construct a simple peasants house with the outside complete and perhaps one complete inner room. What level of trim do you add with brushes. When do you add patches, how many ? I know there are endless possibilities to consider but at my stage its about constructing properties and making them look and feel good. All the AI and complex lighting can come later. Also, there are so many textures. Which ones work well for you ? Thanks for the links so far - i'll be sure to check them out. I'm also pretty interested in Blender so i'll install that and have a play.
  10. I'd be really interested to see any video tutorials where an experienced mapper takes us through say constructing a simple house but with lots of tips and tricks thrown in. If anybody has seen the sort of tutorials on videocopilot.net then you'll know what i'm talking about. Something for us who are new to mapping but are hungry to get doing more - quickly. I'd be really interested to see peoples approach's, what they do first, how they add detail what useful shortcuts and tips they use. I've just started mapping and there's sooo much to know, unless you're happy with square blocks everywhere ! I learn best by watching others so video tuts are the best way to get my knowledge up to speed avoiding all the gotchas others had fallen into. Would anybody like to make one ? ( I know there are a few on youtube and they're good but very slow ). cheers
  11. Thanks folks, now sorted. I may well be picking your brains in the future !
  12. Folks, Firstly i'm a big fan of TDM and have just started committing time to mapping. I've hit my first snag - i've imported a prefab fireplace and i'm getting leak errors on each of the components in turn. If i replace with a like for like model then no problems. All i'm doing is importing the prefab, rotating it and fitting into place. Its definately within a sealed room with no bits protruding. Any help most gratefully received. Letran
