  1. SInce here are some people with linux experience as well, I was wondering if somebdoy has some suggestion which hardware and software I can use for a surveillance camera. I would like to put a camera somewhere, but it should transmit the data wireless, so that I don't have to connect stationary via a cable.

Then I would like to install some software that can take a shot i.e. every second or so, ideally with a timestamp on the image as well. Well, this can be done via scripts probably as well, but at least I would need a camera that works with linux.

ZoneMinder will work with any camera that streams images over the network. There is even a LiveCD for Zoneminder (based on Mandriva) so setup on a dedicated machine should be easy, otherwise the packages are all available for Debian and Ubuntu.

  2. Got the 15% off tonight before that expired, but they forcibly dumped a "Free Gift" into my cart which I could not remove. It was a Rosewill rc-6 HDMI cable orignally for $20, but they took $5.00 off and charged me $15.00 for the cable that I (1) dont want/need (2) did not ask for!!! WHAT THE HECK IS THAT ALL ABOUT??! I sent them an email saying to remove it, & will follow up with a phone call tomorrow morn when they open. Their move is pitiful!

Hah! I have seen that before, but don't worry, it really is free! The way they add it to the cart makes it look like it costs extra, but they take the cost off of the other item. Your total should still be $85, so if it is then don't complain! :)

  3. It's gonna be tough to keep the cost under $400 with the latest hardware, but it can be done if you know how to find the best deals. The card I linked above is a great deal, don't hesitate! As for the rest of the components, you can do better.

The CPU + mobo you listed = $219.99 + tax and shipping (plus $10 mail-in-rebate). Here is a combo deal with the same CPU but different mobo (similar features). This combo is $194.99 + tax and shipping (plus $15 mail-in-rebate). That alone saves $25 up front and an additional $5 with rebate. On top of that, Asus is a more respected brand than ECS.

The PSU you listed is fine, and can handle the HD4850 above, but how about this Antec Sonata case with 500W Earthwatts PSU? $79.99 with Free shipping. I have this PSU in a different Antec case, and I feel confident your setup (with a single GPU) would be fine with "only" 500 watts. Here is the PSU alone at Newegg and the case with PSU for reference. This would save you an additional $60 up front (the case and psu you linked is $30 shipping).

I can't find a better RAM deal at the moment, but I'll let you know if I find something.

Good luck with whatever you choose!  B)

  4. The HD4670 is a decent entry-level card, and it will work just fine on medium or low settings for a lot of games. A much better choice would be this HD4850 for $85 when you use the promo code included on the page (and $75 after $10 mail-in-rebate). Free shipping on that card actually makes it cheaper than the 4670 even before the rebate! Hurry, promo only good till 06/21 and while supplies last!

FWIW, I have this 9600GT which performs respectably, so I would recommend it also. The HD4850 outperforms it, though (at least under Windows it does).

EDIT >> One thing I should have done before recommending a card is asking about your current computer specs. You will need a more powerful power supply for the HD4850 or 9600GT vs the HD4670. So, how about listing your computer specs so we can make a better choice?

  5. Wow, what the hell? At first I was thinking it looks great. But within the first 18 seconds, the truth is revealed. It looks like a series of heavily scripted (see end especially) "mini-sequences" you play through one by one. Hit it again! You know, right when it flies to one of three designated spots where you can hit or miss, while you stand at one of two or three permitted 'standing positions'. Nice shooting John. Look out it's going to ram the building....... [right now, see!?]

    Yuck, no thanks.

This is my biggest complaint of modern games - they aren't actually games anymore, they're interactive movies. Dammit, I wanna think when I play games! And don't you dare give me a **Boss to fight! >_<

** I take exception to the "Bosses" in the Thief games because you don't directly fight them.

  6. :)

Now I can play it later but not sure how its going to run on my crappy system.

It's not surprising that greebo posted the wrong command since that is the current command to run darkmod. Once the mod is released every FM will be run from within darkmod.

Glad you got it working. :)

I take it you still can't play?

From the last log you posted:

dlopen '/home/jay/.doom3/saintlucia/gamex86.so' failed: libIL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Do you have the correct (32bit) libIl.so.1 file? What is the output of locate libIl.so ?

  7. Current search path:

    /home/rich/.doom3/darkmod

    /usr/local/games/doom3/darkmod

    Can anyone help ?

The game doesn't appear to be finding the saintlucia directory. Are you sure you extracted everything to the correct location? For Saint Lucia you should have the directory ./doom3/saintlucia, not ./doom3/darkmod.

  8. I actually mean the actual font the text is written, like the note in the bar right at start. I could hardly read it because I couldn't understand the letters because of the poor handwriting (font). Also the holy scripture book in the church main hall I just gave up on trying because the font was too dracula-like.

This will be fixed once TDM is released, but for now you can fix this yourself. Open the console and type:

    gui_smallFontLimit 0.15

    and

    gui_mediumFontLimit 0.30

    After:

  9. What are the benefits of a dual-boot like that? I'm somewhat sketchy on what a dual-boot actually is, but if you literally choose on boot-up which system to load, what's the advantage of keeping Vista (since I can't imagine every using it)? Wouldn't I need to download drivers to work under XP regardless?

Dual-booting allows you to use older software/hardware that isn't optimized or have drivers for Vista, otherwise there really isn't much benefit other than OS familiarity.

I know a lot of people still love XP, but really, XP was originally released in 2001 and it simply can't make full use of your modern hardware. If your Vista is 64-bit then this is doubly so. Also, if your laptop was never sold with XP then it is possible there are no XP drivers for it, period.

I recommend just sticking with Vista. Win7 should be released later this year, so if you must use Windows then go with that later (almost everyone who has tried Win7 likes it more than Vista).

  10. Is Vista updated to SP2? As much as I dislike Vista myself, I would recommend keeping it and setting up a dual-boot with XP or even Win7 Beta (google for instructions). Just defragment the drive and resize the Vista partition to maybe 20GB, then use the rest for XP or Win7.

As for drivers, it is possible that you may need to hunt down the drivers for XP (or even Win7). Many laptops do have specialized hardware that require specific drivers, and it isn't always easy finding those drivers.

Also, concerning warranty issues you may have, the manufacturer may require the default OS installed.

  11. Wow, well damn. I'd buy this, but I don't have or want Steam. Is there any other solution? Can I buy it legit on a virtual image and then 'disconnect' it from steam and play on a regular system? Ironically steam is both enabling and shutting down this legit purchase.

Edit: trilogy? I'm only seeing two episodes... I think.

Unfortunately there is no way around Steam at this price, though I guess you could purchase the game on Steam and pirate the games so you don't feel like you stole the game.

Yes it's the whole trilogy. It contains Penumbra Overture and Penumbra Black Plague Gold Edition.

Penumbra: Black Plague Gold Edition contains both Penumbra: Black Plague and the expansion Penumbra: Requiem
  12. I also missed being able to eat the pretty food. Redneck Rampage had an hilarious system for food consumption. Goo-Goo Clusters/Moon Pies/chips were food & made you fat, and the beer/whiskey/moonshine gave health and got you drunk. I'm not looking for the flatulence factor nor do I want to pee in game, but is it possible to make the player get drunk if they chugged a bottle of wine? For instance, have it affect the light gem so you can't hide as well if you're drunk or make it easily for the AI to hear you.

    Hmm...just a thought.

Deus Ex was similar. Eating various snacks obviously improved health a little (didn't make you fat), but smoking cigs made you cough and (IIRC) lose health. Wine also improved health and made you tipsy, but drinking too much wine made you drunk. It wore off quickly, though. There was some drug at one point that I think would kill you.

  13. And worse, you have to make yourself visible to AI (by being near light) at the very time when your attention is elsewhere.

We decided it was too much of a double-whammy. :)

Well I was thinking that would add a level of difficulty (and possibly suspense) to the game. At any rate, I can see it being extremely irritating depending on the number of readables some FMs would have.

Ah well, 'tis better to have been considered and shot down, than never to have been considered at all. Or something... :)
