  1. Thanks for clarifying. I'm not personally opposed to it, just thinking about players of the mod who might object based on their own cultural background. But now that I think about it, some of the vocals the guards shout at you are hardly tame so I imagine it would be a whole lot of effort to cater for such an audience.

  2. I have a VPS that I share with a friend and they're pretty good regarding uptime and performance, it's a basic root / ubuntu server but I've got experience with managing this type of system.

The hosting is provided by www.memset.com if anyone is interested, here are some of their options:

    1 x 0.20 GHz Xeon core, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB RAID(1) disk (£9.95/mo)

    1 x 0.40 GHz Xeon core, 1 GB RAM, 60 GB RAID(1) disk (£14.95/mo)

    2 x 0.40 GHz Xeon cores, 2 GB RAM, 90 GB RAID(1) disk (£19.95/mo)

For the requirements Springheel mentioned we would need more than the basic server offering, which means at least £20 per month, I could pay up to half of this if anyone else is interested in chipping in.

Alternatively, if the storage can be reduced (maybe by keeping the backups on Amazon S3 for example), then I would be happy to pay the full cost for the first option above. Bandwidth is also a consideration, is there any indication how much bandwidth usage to expect?

  3. I think there is a setting in windows which, if enabled, causes keys to be ignored if several of them are pressed at the same time. I had such issues while gaming under Windows XP. As this problem doesn't occoured under Vista and W7, I cannot remember the setting, though. You may search under settings/keyboard or so.

I think you might be talking about Sticky Keys, it's an accessibility feature. It probably would make running and jumping impossible.

  4. I don'r remember exactly, it was either mentioned on ttlg or I saw it on thief-thecircle before TDM was released. Been following it ever since. I assumed it would somehow be a beautiful yet clunky mod, was thrilled when I finally got to play it and the controls/movement were even better than the originals.

  5. I'm guessing the site is running Apache in pre-fork mode, might be worth increasing the default max connections. As a quick fix, I think it would be worth signing up for CloudFlare CDN (it's free), as this will serve any static content. That would prevent the site going down (and taking the downloader with it). See https://www.cloudflare.com (obviously Apache will need a restart first to allow CloudFlare to pick up the content).

  6. I'm glad to see this go, but there are still major doubts in my mind whether this reboot is worth my money or time. I can put up with a lot, but what worries me the most is their contextual action button decision. I know they've since given the jump action a dedicated button, but the fact that it used to be contextual means that the entire game had been designed to be very linear, very restrictive and therefore is not designed to cater to players who enjoy the freedom to explore. This is unlikely to have changed.

It will probably be an enjoyable game, but I just wish they wouldn't use the name 'Thief' by itself, it suggests they're redefining what a thief game is, which pisses on the memory of the originals. Even TDS didn't go that far.

  7. Playing requiem last night, I heard the watch guard captain say "Stay out of my way" as he passed another AI, who replied with something like "As you say Sir". It came across as a very realistic encounter.

I haven't looked through all the AI improvements but the level of realism in the AI is noticeably better all round, so well done. I also for the first time heard a guard commenting on how nice my boots were after he killed me, nice touch. :-)

  8. Excuse my ignorance, but if there was a different branch would this mean that changes made to the main TDM code base (like graphics / physics improvements) wouldn't be included in the new branch unless added separately?

I've also always wanted to see a co-operative TDM where 2 or more thieves could complete existing maps by sharing the loot / items objectives. It would also be cool to have a different multiplayer game type so you could for example have 2 thieves compete to reach an objective first (which would probably mean specially designed maps). Still just a pipe-dream but hopefully the recent boost in player numbers will bring someone with the skill and motivation to try it.

  9. This is an excellent idea, it could help make searching for examples of architecture much easier.

A lintel can be a load-bearing building component, a decorative architectural element, or a combined ornamented structural item. It is often found over portals, doors, windows, and fireplaces.

A dormer is a structural element of a building that protrudes from the plane of a sloping roof surface.

  10. ...requires nothing less than a complete redesign of these weapons and tools. Also I guess the lack of tactile feedback actually breaks immersion, more than the abstract method using a mouse and keyboard.

It's a little bit like when you play a real guitar and compare that to a Guitar Hero controller. While the controller sucks big time, it is still better than playing a virtual guitar by tracking finger movement in nothing but thin air.

Sure, the weapons would need to be tracked using the leap motion api instead of playing an animation, but the weapons themselves wouldn't need to be changed.

I'm not convinced the lack of tactile feedback would necessarily break immersion, Wii sports (e.g. Tennis) manages to provide an experience that's no worse than traditional control systems. It's definitely not the holy grail, but without some kind of tracking sensor like this, VR headsets would at best give you all the immersiveness of a disembodied eyeball :-/

  11. The best fit for the Rift would definitely be flight sims, driving and mech type games where you're in a fixed seated position, but I would absolutely love to play an already immersive game like TDM with this.

There's been no mention from the devs about a custom control system, but something that would work quite well would be the leap motion controller (https://www.leapmotion.com). Imagine swinging the blackjack, bringing the spyglass up to your eye or drawing a bowstring by imitating those exact actions, this would work very well with the Rift to avoid breaking immersion. One obvious downside is that you would probably need to have gestures for player movement (or use one hand for WASD and another with the leap).

  12. I played this when it first came out and it was a lot of fun. SeriousToni is right about the visibility, the Thief player character gets progressively more transparent in shadow until you're completely invisible in the darkest shadow, and this was balanced by the Guards being able to shoot you with a crossbow flare bolt to keep you lit up for a limited time.

They didn't use any of the original Thief assets, this was a total conversion although some textures were clearly based on the originals.

I still remember my favourite maps, Flats, Bourgeouis, Folly and Grange. Although it was a lot of fun, the drawback to the Thieves vs Guards game type was that from the beginning of each game the human guards of course knew there were thieves around, so guards would often immediately start running around attacking any shadow they could find etc, and the pace of the game was a lot faster than a traditional thief game (whether this is an actual drawback is a matter of opinion). Co-operative Thief always seemed like a more authentic Thief experience, so it's a shame there aren't more players of the Thief2 multiplayer patch, at least when I tried this out.

Still, would be fun to go back and try out Thievery again, maybe we could get enough taffers from these forums to set up a couple games for a virtual TDM meet :)
