  1. I really enjoyed this one, especially the very tense part stalking the watchman, I literally started sweating 😅
Absolutely loved sneaking around and exploring the bandit HQ as well 👍

But have to agree with some posters here that the very long start section was confusing and slightly frustrating, as there was no map and no indication where the target was located. I always found myself thinking I must have missed the pub - even if it was basically a very linear path to the objective it was in no way clear where the pub was located before getting there. It would've helped a lot with a map or some more specific directions, otherwise a player would start looking for the pub at the start like I did.

As for the final objective, I figured this was the only way to deal with these nasty scum:

    It's a grisly job, but someone's got to do it I guess ... 😆

  2. @Frost_Salamander Thanks for checking :)

    Spoiler

Yeah, I kind of suspected it was intended, as getting the body out of there would be really hard, and involve silly immersion-breaking stuff like throwing him off the church tower (he'd survive...)

It's not a huge deal for me, I can still finish the mission from my last save with some noclip to save time. Far as I'm concerned, mission's done.

But wondering as a workaround if there's a console command to "resurrect" and just get the objective checked off maybe? Or just set it completed for the OCD completist in me? :)

    EDIT: Fixed it 😆

    Spoiler

    remove ai_coates
    spawn fsx:ai_vinton_coates

One thing I did notice that might be a clue - his head is a *separate* entity from the body. Maybe the game detects the head under water as drowned/dead but for the objective to trigger the body needs to be under water? Very fiddly to test...

  3. Loved this mission as well, it's a small area but a *lot* to discover and great atmosphere.
Some really tricky vertical bits too - I admit I had to cheat a couple times to figure out to even get up there

In the end I figured this was a more fitting punishment to these darned republicans treasonous scum:

    Spoiler

    4y90L0O.jpg

Probably better than ending up in the King's torture chambers? 😅
Interestingly, I got to this point *before* I found out the surprise with "Geoffrey". Turns out spooking the party with a noise arrow makes them panic, forget about the plan, raising the bars without activating the ghoul and escaping, making them easy to clobber and put in there instead 😁

  4. Hi, I've been getting back into Dark Mod after some time, and have really been enjoying this mission and the first part, really well done - great stories and ambiance!  🥷👍

Just one thing though, I think I made a boo-boo, and just at the end... 🥴

    Spoiler

Coates was at the last place I looked (of course!) - the church.

Really hard to get the body out of there, so I figure the briefing says "accident near a body of water" - well there's a font in the church, that's (holy) water. So I dump him in there, head first. Not exactly *subtle*, but gets the message across I guess. Never liked those Builders and their stupid religion anyway 😅

    tqxgumc.jpg

So he drowns after a while (love how just his head in water makes the game detect this). Body says "(dead)". But objective is still not completed. I try picking the body up and shooting it with a fire arrow - nope. Pick it up, noclip and dump it in the river and the well - nope...

    Various methods:
    Mine: ✔️
    Fire arrow: ✔️
    Bludgeon: ✔️
    Drowning in well: ✔️
    Drowning in river: ✔️
    Drowning in baptismal font: ❌
Falling (repeatedly) from great height onto cobblestone: ❌

Problem is, I don't have any recent saves or quicksaves... 😓

  5. Thanks for the replies guys, appreciated 👍

Renaming the CFG was a good idea for doing a quick test - and it's back to working! 😄 🎆

Since it's apparently some setting, I'm curious which one it might have been, or maybe a combination of settings (I hope not). I'll have a look and test the most obvious looking ones.

    Thanks!

EDIT: Apparently it was this line in the CFG:

    seta tdm_frob_distance_default "0"

Default is 63. I have no idea how that setting could have been changed, maybe it happened on update?

  6. Hi,
I finally had some time to get back into TDM, but encountered a bizarre issue in that I'm no longer able to pick up (frob) items. I can still open doors, toggle switches, but the items just never light up for me to pick up 🤨

Specifically, the first mission I tried was "Shadows of Northdale ACT I", and after entering the shop I couldn't actually pick up anything to buy. Then went back to the home, behind the painting are several item that also cannot be picked up. See the attached screenshot from the save game.

It might be a real noob issue, it's been a while since I last tried TDM, but played it a lot some years ago.

Maybe it's a FM-specific issue, so I tried also "Dragon's Claw" but not sure if I've encountered any items I should be able to pick up yet. I'm trying to think of an old FM where there's some items at the very start I could test with.

I use a custom controller config through XPadder, so my first idea was that it was broken, but the same happens using just RMB for frob.
I run Windows 10 at 150% scaling, and some older games have problems with this, so I disabled scaling for the TDM exe, but no help.
I also have a triple-monitor setup (TV, two regular screens), but that's never caused an issue in TDM before. I'm running TDM at 1920x1080 on the TV.

I run "TheDarkModx64.exe" but I also tried the regular "TheDarkMod.exe".

One thing I've not tried is a complete reinstall of TDM, I might try that later as well.

    Other possibly relevant information:
OS Name    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro (version 20H2)
    Version    10.0.19042 Build 19042
    Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz, 4001 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    16,0 GB
Adapter Type    GeForce GTX 970, NVIDIA compatible

    TDM is installed at "f:\Games\Darkmod"

    Any ideas?
I just hope I'm not being a total noob here... 😅

TDM can make screenshots itself. The default key is F12 (or at least it is for me; not sure if I changed it at some point, but cannot remember). If you want to change it, you can find it in the Setings -> Controls -> General. So there is no need for the Steam overlay just for that.

Oh yeah, that's true. I guess I got so used to using the Steam overlay for it instead. It was useful for directly uploading but I can live without it.

And if the above is true and it seems like fixed in 2.09 then it will sort itself out with a bit of patience anyway :)

  8. After a long time not playing TDM I wanted to try out 2.08 but was stumped on this issue.

    I found this solution though:
    https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/1489992080524679196/

    Quote

-Exit the game and Steam completely
-Right-Click Steam and Run as Admin
    -Open Steam Big Picture Mode
-Navigate to Manage Shortcut -> Controller Options
-REMOVE the checkbox under 'Enable Steam Overlay for this Game'
-Back out to the main Steam Big Picture Menu and then 'Exit Steam Big Picture' and it should save your settings properly.

The "Exiting Steam" and "Run as Admin" bit is not really necessary...

There is no way to disable the overlay from the regular Steam interface for a non-Steam game, but doing it from Big Picture Mode works. The cursor is normal again, even when launched from regular Steam UI.

Drawback of course is no overlay, not such a big deal for me - but also no easy screenshots. Then again, screenshots in non-Steam games was never really supported anyway, they worked but you'd lose them all if changing the shortcut in any way... 😕

  9. To bring my (totally unneeded) 2€ into this - I think maybe you guys are reading too much into the Steam terms. Looking at the massive pile of dung that gets released on Steam every single day (yes, anime novels I'm looking at you), surely TDM would pass muster easily. Sure you need some kind of organization to handle contact with Steam and to make necessary changes to the client for Steam integration and so on, but I assume there's already some people who run this site, do releases and post updates who would fit that role.

Granted, the Steam forums truly are a cesspit of humanity, and after a release you are sure to be swamped with all manner of badly reported errors, trolling, and general stupidity. This is probably the biggest problem. Best to be clear from the start that the forums on this site will be the primary support channel.

Another strategy to get more visibility would be to get more focus on the Moddb pages - it's a huge community there, much nicer than Steam, and TDM deserves more attention than it's currently getting.

  10. Cool stuff!

I made one a couple of years back too B)

    http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/15367-xbox360-controller-xpadder-profile/

I've also made one for Controller Companion on Steam:

    http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=865246483

But not a lot of people use CC I think, especially with the new Steam Big Picture controller setup.

Steam BP mode has a really nice feature allowing you to make your own profiles for games, even non-Steam games launched through Steam. So I've made a profile for that as well, but I don't think it's that easy to share since non-Steam games have unique ids so you can't browse content others have created.

If TDM ever makes it to Steam proper, it will be easy to share controller profiles with others ^_^

  11. For those having problems here's a workaround.

The updater downloads the new version as "_tdm_update.exe" (on Windows), and then apparently fails to copy this over the old file, then deletes the temporary file.

So what I did was copy the new file out of the folder while installer was running, let the update fail, and then overwrite the "tmd_update.exe" with the (renamed) "_tmd_update.exe".

    Not pretty but works...

  12. Even though there has been no official level editor, etc. released (yet) for the new Thief game, because it uses the Unreal 3 engine, with it's technical aspects being very familiar to many; I wonder if a partial mod of sorts might be possible to correct the game's interface/graphics and so on more towards a proper Thief look and feel (like the custom mod settings that were made for Thief III to make it more accurate to Thief, before the TDM got started)? Hmm...

If they'd release an editor and open up for modding there would be a lot of possibilities for custom maps and changes to the UI, adding in new models and so on.

Like, look how Tripwire has done with Red Orchestra, completely opening up for modding. Modders can create vehicles, weapons, uniforms and maps.

They even had a total mod turn into a game of its own, and the devs of that mod (Rising Storm) gets income from sales and created their own studio.

Now, if Eidos has any interest in doing this is another question, but it would surely extend the life of the game if people could mod it.

Imagine someone starting to create FMs for Thief in this engine, it would be great, even if a modder would not be able to create the same level of insane detail which is in the full game.

  13. There's a servant/master dialogue sequence in one of the side quests (Carnal Connoisseur, iirc) which is well-written, well-voiced and funny.

" I could use the spare key, master..."

    "No! No! That's ok!"

  14. Haha, looks like they actually managed to create a DST bug... or something. For me the trouble started today but I played fine yesterday so not sure if it's DST, but it sure seems related.

A lot of people are reporting it so I assume it will be fixed pretty soon. I'm not going to change the system clock just to play a silly game, I can wait a couple days

Trouble is, while messing around I deleted the last save so now I have to play The Hidden City from the start...

  15. Thanks a bunch for the guide Bikerdude, very useful for my "oldish" PC. Should have known that the best guide for Thief would be on this forum

I love how Unreal is such a tweakable game, but how developers always fail to do the most basic tweaks...

By the way, been playing a couple of hours and apart from some FPS drop in large areas it's basically smooth. This on an almost six years quad 2 core, 2.83 Ghz, with a slightly newer GTX580. So it's definitely playable on older boxes. But don't even try on an old laptop :P

  16. Thought you guys would be happy to know The Dark Mod has been given the honor Mod Of The Year for 2013 in the latest PC Gamer :)

    http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/12/26/mod-of-the-year-the-dark-mod/

(maybe a bit late, didn't find any other references to this on the forums)

While it didn't win at the Moddb awards, the fact that PC Gamer acknowledges the greatness of TDM means a lot I think. Hopefully this can get some more players to try it out, and also make missions and contribute.

  17. Thanks for the feedback Aswand, it's nice to hear it's being used :)

Would you mind telling what modifications you use, and I could consider changing the profile I post here?

Also I've been looking into using the LS for combined creep, walk, run, but I find it a bit hard to configure in Xpadder, and also I am worried it might lead to situations where you want to creep and pull the stick too far leading to a Run, which gets you discovered... So not sure if it's a good solution.

  18. Ok I just figured it out. And let me just say:

That was a NASTY surprise - no fair man!

Hehe I do enjoy a challenge and I figured something bad was about to happen down there, it was too obvious. Then again, I did not expect what happened! Good thing I save a lot lol.

Spent a good long while whacking the crown with the sword to get it into the tunnel where I would be safe (is that the only option here??) then needed a couple saves to get the door open on time.

Thanks for a fun mission, really well made!

  19. Thanks for the help Obsttorte - I understand now that door is referred to on the map and is the same as the top door of the south stairwell. It was obvious really.

Some further help is needed I'm afraid (or maybe it's a bug)

The torches in the crypt - no matter which order I light them I can't get anything to happen.

I've tried lighting the second from left with Fire first, since the picture shows it being lit, then Water on left and the rest.

But should not the order be Water, Fire, Moss, Gas? At least that's how I understand the message - but maybe there's some other hint I need to understand.

    And some bugs:

The priest does not leave his room, he seems to be stuck between the chair and his desk and does not move even when i noclip in and reveal myself.

I was able to read spoilers to figure out where the secret passage is - but without these there would be no way in the world I would find it, even listening in the stairwell, so I could not get in there.

Also, the "mysterious letter" inside the alcove after using holy water on the statues was invisible, is this intentional? I only found it by pure chance by frobbing at the flor since I though there might be a secret somewhere there.

I will try to recreate these errors - I might have made too much noise and "scared" the priest to get stuck where he was.

  20. It seems that the in-game downloader is still pointing to the wrong mission. So if you want to play the rebuild, please download it from the link in the first post.

I downloaded Old Habits 2 from in-game and it's certainly a different mission from Old Habits 1? Is there another updated version?

While I'm at it, gotta say I love it - love the look and the toughness - while the first one was not so impressive with the design of the house and felt a bit bare, this one feels really good, it looks like a real place someone lives in. Work of a master B)

And I could need a little hint for tonights continued play if you kindly?

I can't seem to figure where to find the key for the upstairs locked door - the one near the hallway and the guard with a torch, near the window you can climb to. I've been inside the throne room and the private quarters of the lord but not been able to figure where I've missed looking. Something obvious, I'm sure

  21. So "Oldhabits1" is the old version? I've been playing through it, I thought it was only the first part ... newbie mistake

Anyway, I've been enjoying it regardless - even if I might be missing out on some goodies in the new version.

Just a couple things I need help with

    - The chest in the lords bedroom, I can't seem to find any way to open it. I've disable the generator in the basement but this only opens the glass in the museum.

    - The jewels behind the shield in the hallway with statues and animal heads on the wall? I know it's there, I want to get it all so I resorted to the console (I know....) But there doesn't seem to be any buttons to open it - maybe I've not looked in the right place...

    Any hints?

EDIT: Meh, nevermind, sometimes all you need is to post on the forums and ten minutes later you find it

Thanks for an excellent mission Obsttorte, I do love me a good manor heist

  22. Thanks, I got them now :) I don't know why I thought it was so hard at the start...

I guess just had one rope arrow and if I fired above the balconies I would lose it, and I didn't figure out I can just fire on the balcony railing itself and it will stick, and still get it back.

Thanks for a great map Sire Taffster, the lack of complete darkness inside and the watchmen with lanterns make it a real heart-stopper at times, loved all the tense lockpicking moments :)

Only drawback was maybe the streets felt a bit empty, could do with some more people (even if night).

The Garden was confusing, does it have a point or just for dressing? I spent a long time trying to figure if there was something to be done there - although this might be your intention, to throw a 'red herring' in the water? :P

Also, the Pagan worship apartment with spawning zombie was AWESOME

    Thanks guy!
