  1. I recommend using hard disks as backup medium. They are more cost efficient and a lot faster than DVDs.

Just rember to always have at least two backups and copy the backups once per year from one medium to another to keep the data from fading away (both are good advice for backups on any medium, not only hard disks).

  2. FYI Biker has viewing access to the forums, he asked me about one thing I posted, after he was banned (via Discord).

Everyone has read access to all public forums except Betatesting (that may have historic reasons) as they are visible and readable when not logged in.

  3. They prohibit using any in game assets, and remaking in-game maps in new engine. Well it doesn't matter. What if a separate mod is made for each installment containing only the game i.e. Dark Mod: Thief 1; Dark Mod: Thief 2, where the key to playing these mods (which will only be downloadable through steam) will be owning the original games respectively.

The pseudo mod way of doing it looks okay to me - if you get them to understand what exactly you are trying to do.

If you fail at that it will not make any difference whether you are right or not as they have the resources to sue you into oblivion no matter what.

The team is definitely right on not daring to risk TDM's existance over some Thief remake while they already got over hundred missions out and have lots of ideas for improving the engine further.

So if you really want to do it, ask Square Enix for permission to do a fan remake based on a heavily modified fork of the id Tech 4 (Doom 3) engine wich will require Thief 1/2 to be installed.

And never use The Dark Mod's name for it and never mention it in your communication about your project.

  4. Flash still exists in 2019?!

And why do they promote Flash instead of their equally bad but selfinvented Silverlight?

Why I don't feel comfortable using proprietary software to browse the Internet.

On Gentoo Linux there is a somehwat stripped down and easy to compile Chromium available.

But on Windows you will probably have to use a binary blob containing features that someone else wants you to use (i like my new tinfoil hat - it's so shiny)...

Can't have both: Easy to use and the ability to cherry-pick the features you want.

  5. I'm just going to make the lute player an undead immortal skeleton called Ralph who is eternally bound to play his lute in the tavern, the residents are used to him now so they just happily co-exist as long as the ale flows and the music plays.

That has to get you the best use of undead in a mission award!

  6. You know, no disrespect towards Bikerdude, but, i can only explain to pray for someone to ban me that it involves a lot of drama queen attitude. Otherwise you could just stop posting, or stop attending to the community. Really, try to imagine the psychology behind it... that's either maximum OCD, or compulsive self-display.

Beeing a drama queen, narcistic, or having OCD are not the worst traits to have. They are bad traits, but: In real life character traits choose you - not the other way around. And i never met a human without any bad traits. Some even have to use a wheel chair or can't see. Others have to constantly throw insults to everyone. And there are uncounted traits that are even far worse than that.

Drama queen is one of the traits i would explicitly choose for getting some extra character points to put in feats like darkvision or memory (having a low level in the last one really sucks)...

Whatever bad trait he got - it looks like some of that extra character point are in his great mapping skills...

Oh well, that's why you don't do shit that gets you banned.

Surely, forcing him to keep his experience to himself will hurt him the most (instead of the people who lack that experience).

  7. Maybe, the route via elevator is not shorter than using the stairs (could be the case if the elevator is far away from the stairs).

Don't know, whether there is a way to add a travel cost to some area to make them prefer another route while still being able to chase you everywhere.

Try to block off the stais first to confirm that they can use the elevator at all. For this test you have to use aas32_flood on the floors that are then only reachable by elevator.

  8. Unemployment or feeling like a wage slave are bad - but knowing, that your doing a bullshit job or one that actually makes world less enjoying is much worse. A lot of people nowadays are trapped in such jobs.

UBI might be the chance to free people from having to be "big data expert in a company leading the field of targetted advertising".

  9. By the way, how come he is not around and working with us here in TDM?

That is really odd. Why would one animate a player model for a game like TDM and for the same engine, TDM runs on - but not put it into TDM?

He seems to be interested in stealth, the "medieval" look, even got zombies and magic stuff in his test map...

    - You need a fully animated player character for this to work. We dont have that.

What i have seen in the linked video would be good enough for an optional true first person mode.

    - You reintroduce the problem of another unwanted change in gameplay: projected shadows coming from the player that the AI should be able to notice (you cant have body awereness without it) - this has been discussed to death before and the consensus is that its not a good gameplay feature;

    - Its basicly just an aesthetic change - it adds to the immersion, but doesnt really contribute much to the gameplay experience (apart fom the aforementioned problem of player shadow). So its a lot of work for little to no pay.

Projected shadows would be nice. With or without AI detecting them from whatever distance.

Soft shadows also did not add to the gameplay - but they improved my TDM experience a lot.

  10. True, but the impact will alert nearby guards. I was thinking of something that can do that and knock out guards quietly I guess.

    Do moss arrows trigger switches?

I rarely use this overpriced arrows. But the few times i used them, they did not alert nearby guards.

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know a nice mission for training crate knockouts?

  11. And this is why IMO is a bad idea is a very complicated set up only to make the game more difficult and perhaps more frustrating.

More and more missions have to resort to knockout restrictions to make missions not too easy on higher settings. As i like knocking out AI and also like some challenge in missions i would like the game having more adjustable difficulty mechanics (silhouette checking could be adjustable like the regular lightgem - and switchable).

The only downside for the silhoutte mechanic is that someone would have to code it (and that probably is the real reason why we will not have it).

It also would definitely break some missions but i would probably still have it enabled for most old and new missions regardless.

  12. I don't understand this. AI that find knocked out or dead bodies already go into full alert and warn everyone they meet about an intruder. Isn't that incentive enough to properly hide bodies?

Waking up lnocked-out AI would enlarge the force that searches for the player and should make avoiding it more diffiult. But as i said, i don't let other victims see victims i already dealt with. So it could very well be, that nobody would ever stumble upon a wakeup-by-AI mechanic...

  13. I normally don't kill - but when i do it, i first knock them out and carry them to a safe place before beheading them with my trusty short sword. That way there are no screams and other unexpecting victims don't see any gore lying around.

I like how current knockout / killing mechanics work. Making AI able to wake other AI would not change anything for me as i never let bodies lie around, where others woud see them. But for less stealth-oriented players, it could make the world a litte bit more believable (does not matter, whether unconscious people could really be waken up or not - other games already created the expectation that it works) and incentivise properly hiding knocked-out AI.

  14. I get an ingame dialog "Game Error" "Event overflow. Possible infinite loop in script" ending the mission to the main menu when i destroy the generator below the stairs in "Inn Business" on "Day 2".

    Latest TDM 2.07 x64 on Windows 7 x64.

  15. - I don't know if this is a new bug connected to the combi downloader of if this happens with single downloads as well. Moving to the main menu and back does not fix it, but exiting and restarting the mod does!

That is an old one. I experienced it on 2.06 (but don't remember whether it was in 2.05 too).

  16. I guess it's a matter of a few years that someone will port this technology to idtech4, even if just for fun?

Yearly probability of implementation for that would be way higher if it wouldn't be a top-end-nvidia-only thing.
