  1. I purchased that on steam months ago as I loved DK1/2.

As I type this, I am playing DK2 in parallel. I am astonished how beautiful the game looks even today. I can only wonder why it takes a hundred devs today to accomplish what less than 30 made back in the day. The same goes for I-War (Independence War in the US), a game that was made by a company of what, 10 devs? Shame on you, today's AAA devs! Look at what devs back in the day and Indie devs today can accomplish!

  2. My theory as to using a regular HDD instead of SSD would be at the start they want to reduce costs and get the console in as many hands as possible so they use regular HDDs... But after a period of time they can offer SSD drives say for an extra $100 which they can market as increasing game speed and lowering loading times without having to release a new console. It's obviously backwards compatible with all games as well so from a marketing standpoint its genius!

Well, I think it was the German magazine PC Games Hardware who tested the PS4 with an SSD (Samsung 840, IIRC). They found no noticable performance gains, at least none that would warrant buying such an expensive drive.

WRT Dungeon Keeper, yeah, I saw that too. Fortunately, there is War for the Overworld (https://wftogame.com/) and Dwelvers (http://dwelvers.com/). These alternatives are currently in development and are even playable already (check out the Dwelvers demo on their main page). Dwelvers especially is less of a DK clone than WFTO, as it offers several ground levels as well as production cycles like in The Settlers. And it's cute to watch. ^_^

  3. French... I'm less bad at reading it than understanding spoken French. For me, sentences in this language consist of one overly long word. I'm pretty sure it's just be, because millions of French native speakers can't be all wrong... ^_^

  4. да, ja, och lite svenska är nog! Auch Dänisch, Norwegisch und Französisch, Finnisch natürlich auch. German is my weakest... =P

Okay, I can't compete with that, especially with my French being terribly weak. Although they say that if you managed to learn Finnish with its grammar and all, every other European language is a walk in the park. Anyway, it's a great loss for the translator's community that you haven't become a professional in my industry. A Belgian colleague of mine has the same talent as you, she has an ear for languages and can easily pick up new ones in a very short time. It's always extremely impressive to hear her talking in Russian knowing that she doesn't really speak the language. ^_^

  5. It's mostly backpacking with the few close friends I've kept over the years. It simply means being allowed to go wherever you want in a city without having to get back to a bus or anything like that. That said, we pretty much only went around Germany, France, Scandinavia and Russia. I've never been anywhere else, actually, maybe just because I find them the most interesting in terms of history and culture. That, and they speak languages I learned growing up.

Ты говоришь по русски? Oder nur Deutsch? Jag talar liten Svenska.

  6. I went through Meissen when I was backpacking from Berlin to Dresden and back. It was a wonderful place, but a lot more grandiose in places. It's far more interesting than Whitby, but less quaint I found. German architecture usually is really impressive though =P

Well, you do have been around a lot, I must say. Yes, Meissen is quite a beautiful place.

That being said, here is the photo that I was referring to:

  7. The first step should be having a headset (if you own one) with a microphone that you can switch off or even pull out. I bought mine exactly for this purpose. While this might sound a little paranoid at first, recent events have shown us that it's not.

  8. I rented a place in Whitby for a couple of years and can safely say it's a thoroughly enchanting place. As a whole it looks great at night and has a ton of Celtic and Gothic heritage:

These three view especially look almost exactly like my birth town Meissen (Germany). It's fascinating how alike those old medieval cities were, even after all those modern-day renovations and such.

  9. Hi Markus, you should see no real difference between 60 fps and, say, 100 fps. Also, uncapping the framerate seriously screws up the internal timing, so lots of things might not work correctly. However, if you really want to test your rig, you can d/l the TDM Benchmark Demo and see for yourself how well your system fares. Please note that in this benchmark, lots of stuff like AI is disabled.

  10. @skacky, I had to laugh about "Bitche", which is probably pronounced differently from the English "bitch".

    Anyway, I'm from Dresden, Germany:

However, IIRC we did have a similar thread before. @admins, is it possible to merge them?

  11. My main focus is still on writing my next novel, but it looks like I've got another FM in me . It won't be as ambitious or large as Requiem was, but here are a few screens of what will hopefully be a small two-level campaign. Crits and suggestions for improvement are welcome as always!

If this FM will be accompanied by a novel again, I surely will buy that too. ;)

  12. Howsabout a pair of Really Good earphones?

I once was thinking about what 5.1 audio system I'll get for my computer for playing games, but after a lot of thinking (and being on a student budget) I ended up with relative cheap system, which -in retrospect- was a good choice because nowadays I always use headphones in order not to disturb Those Other People.

I use a simple pair of Sennheiser CX300II for everything: playing, listening to music while working or during commuting.

For exactly the same reason, I treated myself to a beautiful Qpad QH-85 headset: http://www.qpad-germany.de/de/shop/a:46,rc:3,n:kopfhoerer-qpad-qh-black

The sound is perfect for everything, really, it plays music, video and games very well. Although it's just a stereo headset, with my Asus Xonar I have a pretty good surround simulation that is enough for me.

I had a Speed-Link Medusa 5.1 headset before, but its sound could just not compare to a really good stereo setup. Also, the manufacturing quality was god-awful. :-/

  13. Throw a flashbomb at the sucker and run past him or find an alternative route. This game is about guile, but I agree the guard is a bit harsh for newcomers.

I am deeply disturbed by your use of the word "guile", as it is pronounced exactly like the German word "geil", which means "cool" or "great", but also "horny".

  14. I can't fathom how something as involved as TDM could be given a reasonable control scheme on a tablet.

I played Doom 3 on my brother's smartphone, and once you get into the (non-touch optimized) controls it's actually usable. I'm quite sure that with enough passion and understanding of usability, even TDM could be made to work with a tablet/phablet/smartphone.

  15. I don't see any moles on Erin's face when the lightning shows her face fully.

A direct comparison doesn't show the mole for me, either. Strange, I could swear I had seen Erin with a mole on one screenshot. Try as I might, but I can't find that website. I'll either have to go through my browser history again or wait for more evidence to show up. However, there are still the black lips, and if you pay attention to Erin's left eyebrow, its form looks pretty similar to the Old Lady's.

  16. Well, as overly convoluted as that is, I am curious about the game's plot. This is honestly an interesting set up, though the whole side story with Erin's Claw should be left out.

I don't see why the writers couldn't simply say that she had an affinity for violence and tragically fell to her death, an event Garrett tried to prevent to the best of his ability. Do we honestly need to connect this characteristic and event with an obtainable item? And if they wanted the item in the game so bad, simply make it an item purchase, or something for the player to steal in a mission not relating to the story, i.e. in The City Hub.

But as I said, this strange occurrence that causes Garrett to progress a year into the future (or be gone for a year) and also seems to have an effect on the inner workings of The City's society is intriguing to say the least. I'm curious to see the resolve, and I pray that it is good.

See, if you compare the pictures of the Old Lady and Erin you'll see that they have the same black lips and the same beauty mark. Also, the Old Lady is blind, which may very well have happened when Erin fell into the bright light. After all, NuGarrett lost an eye to that light, and he wasn't that near to it. Sorry, but it's as simple as that.

  17. Unfortunately, NMS will be developed as an MMO. If you are into that, you will be in for a real treat, but if you are strongly single-player, you'll be disappointed. Still, there's Limit Theory, which - while being a one-man project - is ramping up to be the next "Frontier: First Encounter" (but with better graphics).

  18. Okay, so the question of who the old lady is, is answered by this trailer: It's Erin. I am assuming that falling into this magical blue light thingy pushed her back in time and made her pretty much immortal. If you aren't sure about wether Erin is or is not The Lady, check her lips (black) and the beauty mark. It's so painfully obvious.

I also hate those flashes when you get into the light. At first, I thought that were just artifacts because of my bad internet connection, but after seeing you guys discussing it here, I realize this is an actual gameplay element. People who are susceptible to bright flashes will have real fun with this game... not.

Apart from that, the trailer was pretty standard - the Hollywood movie blockbuster type, with the exception of the neck-breaking fest. Not even Hollywood would try that, at least not where I live.

  19. Yes it's my first one. :D But I quit because of the rate I was making this, it'd take year or two before I got it as I imagined it, with working on it almost every day.

Aryx, from reading the comments in the "what are you working on" thread, I gather that most mappers need several months to finish their works. So you would be perfectly on time if you took only a year to finish your map in that quality. Really, the attention to details is incredible, and the quality your screenshots show is at least on par with Moonbo's "Requiem", especially since this is your very first map. You really really should finish your work and bless us lowly leechers with another grand work! ^_^

  20. @Goldwell, you might consider having some lights along the way to the house, something like torches. After all, you have to see this from a practical aspect: As the Lord's employee or guard, even in the deepest night you will want to get to the front gate while having some light and not just use the lamp you are holding. Also, I believe that trees and patches of flowers would add very much to the liveliness of the environment.
