  1. The reason for "Steam bashing" is that it is mandatory to play so many games.

And *that* is the first valid argument in this discussion, IMO. Personally, I like Steam well enough to use it for bargain deals, but it's that forced use for so many games (like Metro: Last Light) that annoys me to no end. If I could have gotten a copy of Metro that doesn't use Steam, I would gladly have bought it.

  2. What so dark about Steam? Its accuallly better than hard copies of games and discounts are decent

Absolutely. Also, @jtr7, it's always about you and your self-control. I only buy games that I really really want and that I know will appeal to me (watch a Let's Play on YT to make sure you actually like what you see), so I can't fall into that trap. Also, as STiFU said, there is the wishlist that automatically reminds you of any deals you might be interested in.

  3. -- when you select a "throwable" a blue arc tells you where it will land before you throw it

Actually, this is a bonus for me. I have always struggled to find out the right arc when throwing stuff. When you can save freely, you can save just before throwing and then try as long as it takes to get it right. But it is a nuisance to me.

  4. Back in the day, STiFU pointed me to The Witcher 1 as one of the must-haves in gaming. I'm still happy that I had followed his advice. A few days ago I started with The Witcher 2. So far, I am impressed with graphics, storyline and controls. Obstler, if you are unsure if this really is your kind of game, I recommend buying it on Steam if it's available for a small price. If you are even remotely into smart, adult and grown-up story and great gameplay mechanics, you should give it a try.

EDIT: Right now, Steam offers a 66% discount for Witcher 2, lowering the price to very affordable 6,79€. And once you got the game on Steam, you can always register it on GOG.com and get a DRM-free version there. That's what I did, anyway.

  5. Guys, don't forget that you can disable all visual markers, just like it was vor Deus Ex: HR. Still, unlike Metro: Last Light, this is not an instabuy for me. I will wait for a Let's Play by a veteran Thief player to make up my mind. Right now I'm of two minds: some of those features have the potential to be interesting, while stuff like downloading the loot is just... I'm really at a loss for words.

With regards to graphics, next-gen console or not, Thief will follow the line of all the other Thief games in that it will look like crap. Remember, T1 / T2 and TDS did NOT look as good as contemporary games. Still, those games have their visual appeal even today (at least if you are half-blind).

  6. To me that's the equivelant of saying that you don't need to hate Phantom Menace; just close your eyes and skip through whenever Jar-Jar Binks is on screen. Or Jake Lloyd. Or the "naked" C3P0. Or...wait, what was my point again?

To be honest, Phantom Menace was the first movie ever that I got to watch as a downloaded version. While the quality wasn't nearly as good as today's screeners, it was sufficient to make me realize that I will not pay to watch this piece of... whatever that was, and best forget that I burned two hours of my life.

I'm sure I'll enjoy T4 the same way I enjoyed TDS and the Star Wars prequels...there were cool new things and things that made me cringe, and I had to spend varying degrees of energy to keep them from spoiling the memory of earlier versions.

Doesn't work for me. I either like a piece because it can stand on its own, or I hate it because it fails. To stay with my example above: I loved the original DX, but I like DX:HR as well, because it works as a whole. T3, however, didn't really work in many regards (City Hubs and the deadly water, for example), so I had a hard time even finishing it.

As for rope arrows, didn't they say he had a "grapping hook" callled "the claw"? Are there two different rope-climbing tools? Or are rope arrows now bow-fired grappling hooks (which would actually be cool).

One of the two German sources I mentioned explicitely spoke of a Rope Arrow. I guess we'll have to wait for the release version to be absolutely sure.

  7. Sorry if I dont share the same pessimism as most of you do. Reading both artcles on German games websites (Golem.de and 4players.de), I feel that the new Thief game will be in line with the recent reboots of DX:HR and Tombraider. Those games were dumbed down, yes, and their gameplay was "streamlined" a lot to make it more accessible for the current ADHS Call of Duty generation, but you must admit that it is possible to ghost in DX:HR, and it is possible to not play TR as a duck'n'cover shooter.

I am quite optimistic that Thief's developers will offer us ways to play the game the old way, to ghost the levels without ever raising an alarm. At the same time, they will offer a wealth of options to make gameplay appeal to the current generation of players - to instakill, to chain-kill, to massacre your way through the map, to flow from shadow to shadow without any effort whatsoever. You don't need to like this, but you also don't need to hate it as long as you have the choice to play Thief the old hardcore way.

    That's my 2 cents.

  8. I read mostly contemporary Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Also, I don't confine my fiction reading to just one language. For English, I have almost everything by Timothy Zahn (with the exclusion of his Star Wars books). The same goes for Glen Cook (with the exclusion of The Black Company series), and you might also have heard of William Gibson (the writer who created the term cyberspace), I have read everything written by him as well. For Russian, there is Metro 2033/3034 by Dmitri Glukhovsky and the Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko. As for German, there is a huge mix of Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Hard to name just one, but Bernhard Hennen and Andreas Brandhorst clearly stand out. Both have a very good style and deep, interesting stories.

  9. Maybe it would be useful to have Forum sections for the different languages, where folks from different regions, who aren't as fluent in EN as we are, can post in their native language and ask their questions. Here, they could request translation of Wiki articles, should the need ever arise. But I do see the complication here, because to create a section for every language is unpractical at best. And to create it solely for the main languages (French, German, Spanish, Russian, Portugese) would exclude many players.

    Hm, what do you think?

  10. Well, if you want to spend time translating wiki articles, you should translate it to the languages of countries that don't have such a good english education as germany has. I mean seriously, nowadays the kids start learning english in 3rd grade.

Actually, in some areas they already begin in Kindergarden. -_-

  11. Tes, I'm happy to see you report this problem. I already suspected someone having hacked my router, or a virus on my computer, or whatever internal problem, because no-one else seemed to have this computer. Now that I think about it, it might have something to do with the ISP. Mine is T-Online. I don't know anything about ping'ing websites (I'm on Windows 7 64).

  12. Thats not a bad price as 4x256GB would cost about that, that said those 4 in raid 0 may potentially smoke the single 1TB SSD.

I'm not so sure about that. SSDs these days are severely limited by their interface, in this case SATA 3. I know it sounds ridiculous, but for decades, there was this huge gap between potential interface bandwidth and the actual data the drive could deliver. Now, the first time in PC history (to my knowledge), it's the other way around. Just look at these shiny PCIe 2.0 8x SSD cards with more than 2 GB bandwidth...

    Super Talent RAIDDrive II 480GB, PCIe 2.0 x8 (R2S04801) - Read: 2400MB/s • Write: 2800MB/

  13. Man, that voice actress must have some really crappy recording equipment. I know for a fact that many voice actors have their own home studio (if you can call it that), so she must be either a real cheapskate or someone without proper training on how to set up your audio equipment. However, the audio technician at Bethesda doesn't seem to have a clue as well. This very much resembles my experience with the German version of Oblivion. <_<

  14. Well, Crucial announced that they are going to release a TB SSD drive for a mere 550 USD. It's still a lt of cash, but considering that the price for the smaller SSDs will go down as well, this could be the breakthrough we all have been waiting for (at least I have).

From what I read, hybrid drives are a good compromise between speed and space - they hugely accelerate frequently accessed programs/files, but stil offer lots of space, especially compared with pure SSDs. Still, I don't know anyone personally who owns one.

On another note, my gf's OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB drive died recently. It just didn't react when she started her computer. The day before, everything worked like a charm, but the next day there was zero reaction. A red LED in the drive itself showed that the drive is not operational, so there is no way to access the data and even do a firmware upgrade. In such cases, OCZ readily replaced the drive, as the data in the drive is encrypted with a AES key - and there is no way to get access to this key. The bottom line is, any data on that drive is lost. Which again shows the value of frequent backups...

  15. Apparently it's not true. You can download them but it is not legal unless you already have a licence.

    http://www.forbes.co...tions-for-free/

Well, in that case Adobe did everything to hide that fact. I was able to register for free and had access to all the products in the above list. There is a serial number next to each product, and it seems to be valid. So unless Adobe stated that clearly on the D/L page, I can safely assume I am using these products legally. I can speak only for Germany, though, because the US has all kinds of disclaimers that would be totally illegal here.

  16. Register here: https://www.adobe.co...e=cs2_downloads

    Then download the following products:

    Creative Suite 2 Mac/Win

    Acrobat Standard 7.0 Mac/Win

    Acrobat Pro 7.0 Mac/Win

    Acrobat 3D 1.0 for Windows

    Acrobat Pro 8.0 Mac/Win

    Audition 3.0 Win

    GoLive CS2 Mac/Win

    Illustrator CS2 Mac/Win

    InCopy CS2 Mac/Win

    InDesign CS2 Mac/Win

    Photoshop CS2 Mac/Win

    Photoshop Elements 4.0/5.0 Mac/Win

    Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 Win

You get a unique serial number and can use the products legally. Enjoy! ^_^

  17. It might be worth mentioning that Limit Theory, a project that already secured its financing on Kickstarter, is massively using procedural generation to generate... well, everything, really, except music and SFX. Though the wallpapers don't really reflect this atm, the planets will look quite nicely (for the first steps, please have a look at the first link). Please keep in mind that the latest entry on this is quite old, and when the full game will be released sometime in 2014, planetary surfaces will look much better.

Also, LT's creator draws much inspiration from Giliam de Carpentier's Scape. Sure,

, but this is nice enough, I think. Also, Outerra (
    ) and
    haven't been mentioned here.
  18. While I'm one of the few here in the forum who actually fully enjoyed DX:HR (well, minus the horrid facial animations and the missing lip sync and the botched ending(s)), I think that this is just too much. I mean, a DX:HR-set with just the gun, the vest and the shades would have been okay and actually a nice touch, but the mechanical arms... nah, that's just too much.
