  1. Just coming back in after a long time away to mention, first, it's very good--especially for your first mission!  I've been out of the loop on Dark Mod for 2 years though... do you have any follow-up mission(s) ?

And secondly, also something on the more 'critical' side, if you don't mind?  For background info, I have the newest 2.10 version.  In the shop, to open the secret bookcase, my game will not allow me to frob either the small box, nor the button behind it.  I've tried everything, turned the frob helper on, even tried hitting the button with arrows!  It will not work.  Have reloaded, restarted, etc.

Has anyone else had this bug?  Could it be due to the 2.10 update?

  2. Just wanted to leave a quick note here.  I was out of the Dark Mod loop for a while as 2.06 was said to be very buggy, uneven, and I'm not technically minded so I just gave up until the next update.

I updated to 2.07 a few weeks ago and have been through 4 new missions released in the last year or so.  All were good, but I think this one is probably the best.  I rarely ever leave criticism, praise or anything, so consider this a sign you're doing something right.  I liked the straightforward layout of the map, I hate feeling lost in a maze.  The interiors were designed very neatly.  The objectives were clear, you had good secrets.

I hope your second mission which I haven't played yet, is comparable!  Cheers

  3. No, I'm pretty sure the thanks he got for his countless hours were near universal praise from the membership for his work, and constant helpful attitude.

If you've really "been watching" you'll know the things he's being punished for. "Heavy handed adjustment for bug fixing" = remodeling significant parts of a map that weren't considered buggy? Or even altering a map that permission wasn't given for and inventing entirely in his own head that permission was even given? "Really?"? How heavy this hand must be!

"Wanton use of templates" is the same as copying whole-cloth from other missions and doubling-down when confronted on it? "For real?"? I don't think you've been watching all that closely at all. That or you think everyone else is a liar?

I agree with you, of course, and I don't think folks are lying.

That said, I downplay his controversial actions, because I think it stems from a real-life issue. (I was going to speculate on that, but perhaps that's not proper.) Whatever the issue may be, he's trying to compensate for that by taking control in those places where he is joined, but when it's not enough, it becomes overreach. And look, I could well be wrong. It's just a suspicion. Maybe not even fair to post given he can't speak for himself now, but this is what my intuition tells me about it, so felt I would chime in.

  4. This was an important member who helped keep the lights on, beta-tested countless missions, gave advice and assistance to many, co-authored as well as authored his own missions.

You cannot have a healthy, active mod without industrious members. This guy was a pillar of the community.

I'm hoping it's only temporary. You have a guy who's given countless hours of his time over many years, and the thanks he gets is a ban? So, it's got to be temporary right?

I've been watching, also. Some heavy-handed adjustments to older missions for bugfixing. Some wanton use of templates. Really? That justifies exile of an important content creator? Of an industrious workhorse? For real?

  5. I feel the same about the whole UFO/saucer craze of decades passed (now seemingly something of a spent fad): If you're convinced UFOs are "flying saucers" or other alien spacecraft, visiting Earth (out of boredom ?), they're already IFOs, since you've identified them as something you want them to be. On a sidenote, even Ken Arnold, with whom the whole UFO craze indirectly started in the 1940s, never called them "flying saucers", nor did he claim they looked like that. With the amount of supposed alien sightings that sound like they came out of a UFO popculture manual in terms of their tropes and clichés, I think it's safe to say popculture aliens, UFOs and "alien abductions" are the work of the human mind as much as fairytale monsters were in centuries past. The abduction narrative is also something that's common to fairytales and legends, making things even more suspicious on a psychological level.

I assure you that UFOs are no spent fad, mate. We can't know that they're extraterrestrial, as yet... but there are legitimate unexplained cases. Not "advanced" earthly vehicles... we don't have secret aircraft that defy physics. Not meteors or asteroids, not comets. Real, legitimate phenomena that defies explanation.

Could be extraterrestrial, could be inter-dimensional... as if you can claim to know better?

  6. at night at my parents house you can hear the pet dog walking through the downstairs rooms, the dogs been dead for ages, the sound is the same sound it used to make when it was alive.

For the doubters, I would point you to this. Presuming honesty, this is a solid proof right here. Yes, anecdotal, but anecdotal evidence should not always be waved off...

  7. "All the time the only conclusion one can get to is the power of our minds. Whether you believe in supernatural stuff or not. Because it is impossible with someone who does not have any capacity for imagination. In that regard we can envy the advantages of a plain mind."

Actually, I have a strong capacity for imagination, some degree of belief in the supernatural, highly sensitive, etc... and have never seen a ghost. Explain that.

I grew up as something of an Indigo, have always "wished" to see evidence of the hyper-real... and yet I haven't seen any firsthand.

A paradox, if ever there was one, right?

  8. So, what do you folks think?

    Seen any ghosts?

I know someone who claims they see a ghost, in real life, most days of the *week.* The irony is this person is a normal, high functioning person, no obvious mental health issues.

While I myself, have never seen a ghost... and I'm an abnormal, low-functioning person, with quite a few issues!

Now, let's hear your experiences with ghosts and/or the paranormal!

  9. Well, because of Steam (sales, bundles, and so on) and the like, I can hardly be bothered configuring stuff on my own, no more. I suppose it doesn't help that I was never a sharp cookie, either :P

In terms of Hexen 2, how would I go about setting that up? Should I get the Steam version? Is there a patch that improves the base game, smooths the rough edges?

I never played it, and regretted that. Was hoping to rectify that now. But I'm looking at current and old reviews and the game sounds like a chore. Obscure puzzles, excessive backtracking, hard-to-find doors... Doesn't sound like something I'd enjoy. Oy Vey.

  10. I have fond memories of Raven Software's old FPS shooters, Heretic and Hexen... especially the latter.

Something about that "dark gothic" element, really worked for me. The atmosphere of Hexen was amazing.

I never got around to playing "Hexen 2", though. Is it still worth playing? Are there any mods or "fan fixes" etc?

Chime in, folks.. I'll even take suggestions for similar games, or games on the horizon...

  11. No particular order:

    • Tomb Raider I-III
    • The Longest Journey
    • Grim Fandango
    • Thief Gold & 2
    • Dishonored
    • American Mcgee's Alice

I'm sure there are tons more, but those stick out. Didn't play Thief games and Dishonored until years (a decade or more?) later. Glad I finally did, but I do remember the Thief ads back in 1998 when I was a big Tomb Raider fan. Played a lot of games on the consoles too.

    Some great choices, there, man!

    Especially Grim Fandango.

  12. OH MY GOD!

This mission it's so complete, polished, and AMAZING!

    You made my day!

Thank you so much for your effort, what you did is really incredible!!!

    :D

    Hello Ladro,

I haven't gotten to this mission yet, but next time I fire up TDM, I'll probably run this one first!

Can you give more specificity, as to what you liked about the mission? What made it stand out, in your opinion?

  13. Lemme get this straight..

An argument over a simple misunderstanding, is leading you to (basically) scrap all the hard work you've been doing on several missions, including the Shadowhide mission?

A petty argument is leading you to stop contributing altogether?

At least, reconsider. You help keep the lights on in this place. C'mon man.

  14. Unfortunately due to the amount of work and effort that went into the briefing video there wasnt much love given to the rest of the FM.

Heres a screenshot of the actual mission

I assume the player character is the blue one? And it's still a Thief-like game? What about stealth. Where can the thief hide? (the 2 others are guards)

Even though you only had time to make a 2d level here, it's different in a refreshing way. Looking forward to it.

  15. Reading some more on this: You can gift games from bundles as long as you don't plan to use that game. It creates a URL that you can send to a friend to activate. (I was wrong about being able to store these games as Extra Copies for trades, though.)

This is from the official site:

    https://support.humblebundle.com/hc/en-us/articles/202712460-Purchasing-and-Sending-Gifts#partial

Also, I'm quite certain I've given the Steam key from games I had no interest in, to others, and it worked. After all each key can only be activated once; doesn't matter who does the activation. However more recently Humble Bundle changed and does not provide literal keys it links *directly* to your Steam account. That said, I have many bundles from BEFORE the change with unclaimed games (or, unused keys) and these could be sent to anyone interested.

Anyone looking for a trade should post here, or contact via PM.

  16. I don't know exactly how it works either. For Steam, official trading only works with one "gift" for another. It all sounds like a nuisance though.

And you are correct.. once added to your official library (even if unplayed) no one else can get your game. This only works for games in your gift inventory.

If you have any unclaimed keys: The other way to do this is more crude but works if both parties are honest. Just find the unclaimed Steam key for the game you're not going to play (from a Bundle, for instance) and send it via PM, in exchange for another. I've also given some away that I'm never going to use for nothing in exchange, might as well give it to someone who's interested.

Any of these options would work, lemme know what you think.

    Titles I'm looking for:

    Observer

    STASIS

    Assassin's Creed 2

    Singularity

    Bulletstorm

    Skyrim

    Max Payne 3

    Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments

Let me know which older titles (or indie games) you're seeking and I'll see if I have any.

  17. I have never traded a game on Steam before.

Reading up on it I found you can only trade gifted games. I haven't literally received any games as a gift, but I have a crapload of Steam keys (from bundle purchases) that could be added to gift inventory. Mostly indie titles but also some AAA games I've no interest in.

There's a short-list of titles I'm seeking, which I could put here, but not sure if that's within proper decorum..?

  18. For remake fast travel I'm skeptical, the slow walking and feeling helpless because time go and no progress so far its part of the charm. We are weak beings struggling with dealing with great unknown which is sand plague.

    Quoting mariden on tumblr:

just imagine how many lives could be saved if only the player characters in pathologic rode bicycles

My idea is you could implement quick-travel while still running time off the clock. Same time spent in the game world, less time spent playing the game doing nothing. I suspect this is how it will work out in the remake.

  19. wycha, that's a good overview, should be helpful for first-time players.

Oh boy, great as Pathologic was... there's no chance I would play it again... it took way too much time to get anywhere, and basically most of the gameplay is walking from one side of the map to the other... no shortcuts, no fast travel. Having to spend hours straight to accomplish 1-2 things, because of slow walking speed and wonky game mechanics.. having to reload constantly, sometimes go back to earlier saves.. no thanks, not again.

But is one of a few games you could say is "truly unique" and the writing, while dense, is fantastic.

I'm interested to try the remake whenever that's released... apparently they fix the slowness with some kind of fast travel, along with many other improvements.

  20.

Despite its flaws, it was a fairly inventive survival horror. I like what they did with it (the heat = health idea in particular). Are the games' developers still around ? Did they ever work on anything else ? All that I could find on Wikipedia were games from some hunting series of their's, Carnivores. And it all cuts off after 2011. The article also claims they "were". Hm.

Also... I see your Cryostasis and raise you Penumbra: Overture.

I know Frictional have since gone on to bigger things, but I still think Penumbra was very cool for a debut effort. It started strong and got creepier and more focused with the sequel. I have a fondness for the series because of my love of Arctic horror, and because I followed the series' gradual development a decade ago. Even bought the installments as they were released (sans Requiem). Hard to believe it's already been ten years !

I played one of the Penumbra games a while back--Penumbra Black Plague I think it was. Cool, but disjointed. That thing with the "hive mind" and the tasks given to you, felt out of place, somehow. But again the atmosphere was great, I'm also partial to Arctic suspense.

Is the Overture worth a try?
