While we wait for ATI to fix these things, I thought it would be useful for the actual author of the change to offer alternative ways to modify Doom 3's shaders and interactions. (and maybe offer ATI optimized OpenGL advice in general...).
But, yeah, the above speculation about "other shaders" is merely my own paranoia...

(actually a more troubling idea would be that ATI took the "spirit" of this change as inspiration and replaced as many of Id's shaders as possible with a variety of "optimized shaders...") :(

I believe one or two things happen when ATI's driver uses Humus's fix:
1) Any shader that inherits data from the replaced texture lookup will obviously be missing that data
2) Any new shader will be "shaded" by Humus's shader inside the ATI driver (thus the math will be screwy)
The most troubling idea is that ATI may be dynamically applying this shader depending on the scene...

At the very least JC Denton et al. will have to "code around" what has been done... Humus may have better ideas (in general) about how to achieve what you guys want from ATI hardware

(AFAIK this "fix" is still in the drivers, unless you disable Catalyst AI)

I'm not proposing this as a Fix... I'm saying that his work may be causing problems because of how it interacts with the engine

Shortly after Doom 3 was released, one of the best Demo coders out there, Humus, found evidence that part of Doom 3's lighting interaction was originally planned to be done via shader math instead of via texture lookup. Humus re-enabled this method and modified the way it worked so that ATI hardware gained significant performance.
This change has been incorporated into ATI's driver since then and I suspect that this inclusion is the reason why Catalyst AI causes so much havok for things the the Parallax Mapping mod and JC Denton's HDR work...
I have occasionally corresponded with Humus over the years but would not really consider myself "connected"... nevertheless I have sent an appeal to him to look into this ongoing work and provide is ATI specific OpenGL expertise... (here's hoping... )

I'll test again but I'm pretty sure "Enter" is mapped to "Use" in that demo... I think I've even gone crazy and hit random keys in frustration (excluding weapon keys)... (I know I did that for the doors that wouldn't open).

Yes, I know Enter or U will invoke the Key...
...but neither key opens the foot-locker, treasure chest, or any door that I could locate

Yeah those errors look like something you'd get if one character or command is out of place in the code such that the parser was not looking code from the correct context... If I recall correctly there were a number of people with problems downloading this map at release...
I re-downloaded it recently but I think I used the same browser (Firefox)...
I will try a different browser and a different zip extractor (currently winrar) in case something in the map syntax is getting bunged by either the transmission or extraction process??? (yeah I know, unlikely... especially given how functional it is otherwise...)

Hate to say things like this but (may be superstition)... Doom 3's fog has always been rough on GPU's ( I think there is alot of CPU dependency in the drivers...)

Some AI's in the game follow light patterns and disabling fog changes that lighting... ?

None of the above changes seemed to have any performance impact one way or the other... 7 to 8fps on the path then, once over the hill where the castle is in view... drops to 3 to 4fps
(thats with the help of killMonsters )
But if I turn away from the path, we end of with 15 to 30fps...
(disabling particles does smooth out the foggy areas near the water and cemetery (gained FPS)... but that seem to disable the zombie AI?)
I'll have to wait for Catalyst 10.6 to see if things improve...
Mortem... are you saying all those "Unknown token" errors are benign? (I presume so from your earlier reply).

I was kinda thinking that there may be a bug in ATI's driver with regard to culling interactions (the driver sending some OpenGL equivalent of an ACK)? So I will also try disabling those interaction cvars (on the flip-side).
My more pessimistic conjecture is "RAM isn't fast enough to feed the CPU so it can cull the interactions in time... then the table keeps growing till overflow"...

I got past my "open doors" problem ...

Figure out what to do with the Iron Key and Silver Key... unless they aren't working?

I like missions like Trapped! where you have to acquire your weapons as you go... That sorta reminds me of "forced ghosting". (well... the Blackjack and Sword were in the next room )...

It appears that the "r_useInfiniteFarZ" cvar is associated with r_useInteractionTable... My apologies if this is all due to my own cvar tweaks but I believe that my performance problems were before making a custom autoexec.cfg ...
(I usually don't tweak unless necessary)
(unless that cvar is also enable by default in the mod...???)

I kinda like the "weird" look of this older version of TDM. Yes, I prefer the new lighting, textures, and prefabs for new missions but I kinda like looking back to see what it was like at the beginning. If you do remake this, I hope you include a "retro mode" ...

Final performance quip:
My performance issue seems to be isolated to this error:
idRenderWorldLocal::ResizeInteractionTable: overflowed interactionTableWidth, dumping
Which I suspect may be RAM related? (I saw that my PerfMon graph was all the way to 99% RAM paging)... Does this map require more than 2GB of RAM??? Or more than 512k CPU Cache?
If not, then maybe I am experiencing this problem that was seen by the author of the Fragging Free mod (same error)?
You are lucky! I know something about it.I had this problem in my mod time ago... so I searched everywhere (intenet and souce code) but nothing useful found. Then i did a lot of tests to understand the problem... and the result is that there is sort of table allocated (for interactions) when a map is loaded.
The lenght of this table is about the number of entities that have collisions + about 100.
The "100" is an extra probably used for entities dinamically spawned during the game like gibs and the ones spawned by scripts.
If you exceed the limits of this table that warning will be shown and the game will go much slower. Expecially in big areas with lots of objects.
If you reload the map this time the table will be larger (don't know why) so it was initially hard to reproduce the error.
Conclusions:
- it may happen because you script is spawing too many entities ( like i said before )
- yes, emitters seems having something to do with collisions.
- other than always make sure your scripts are removing what you don't need anymore, you could "trick" the game: create an empty box in the space and fill it with about 100 exploding_barrels. At the beginning of the map remove them all --> now you have some more free space in that damn table.
I know you are thinking "I'll put there 500 barrels instead of 100 so I'll have more space". The bad news is that it seems like it doesn't work in this way and after that about 100 entities removed you always gain the same amount of space in the table.

So to sum up what I've done to look at performance issues for this map:
1) Performance Wiki
2) used Doom 3 cvars to disable fog, etc.
3) Disabled as many other effects as possible (skybox, light-pattern, moon beams)
4) used killMonsters to eliminate AI
After all this, I Windowed the application and and reviewed the performance in Taskmgr...
About 60 to 70% CPU utilization... 1GB of RAM usage...
So I went looking for errors and saw an overflow error right after turning my view to a slow region...
So I did a conDump and found what appear to be indications of broken syntax:

Final performance quip:
My performance issue seems to be isolated to this error:
idRenderWorldLocal::ResizeInteractionTable: overflowed interactionTableWidth, dumping
Which I suspect may be RAM related? (I saw that my PerfMon graph was all the way to 99% RAM paging)... Does this map require more than 2GB of RAM??? Or more than 512k CPU Cache?
If not, then maybe I am experiencing this problem that was seen by the author of the Fragging Free mod (same error)?
You are lucky! I know something about it.I had this problem in my mod time ago... so I searched everywhere (intenet and souce code) but nothing useful found. Then i did a lot of tests to understand the problem... and the result is that there is sort of table allocated (for interactions) when a map is loaded.
The lenght of this table is about the number of entities that have collisions + about 100.
The "100" is an extra probably used for entities dinamically spawned during the game like gibs and the ones spawned by scripts.
If you exceed the limits of this table that warning will be shown and the game will go much slower. Expecially in big areas with lots of objects.
If you reload the map this time the table will be larger (don't know why) so it was initially hard to reproduce the error.
Conclusions:
- it may happen because you script is spawing too many entities ( like i said before )
- yes, emitters seems having something to do with collisions.
- other than always make sure your scripts are removing what you don't need anymore, you could "trick" the game: create an empty box in the space and fill it with about 100 exploding_barrels. At the beginning of the map remove them all --> now you have some more free space in that damn table.
I know you are thinking "I'll put there 500 barrels instead of 100 so I'll have more space". The bad news is that it seems like it doesn't work in this way and after that about 100 entities removed you always gain the same amount of space in the table.

Unknown Token errors in NHAT 3/3

1) Zombies are fine without particles
2) Unknown Token errors are due to 3DSMAX syntax that was not sanitized for Doom 3 before or during the conversion

3) Why are glprogs/arbVP_glasswarp.txt and glprogs/arbFP_glasswarp.txt missing from the base pk4?
(I found some copies in a revised HDR shader pack in JC Denton's HDR Thread at Doom3World and put them back in... now there are no errors about missing them...).
I agree, none of these factors will help performance.
So we are back to the question of why the number of interactions is exceeding the interactionTable width.
Is this table set by an internal ratio (as was previously hinted)?
Can we do something to make Doom 3 allocate a larger table?
(not that it's likely to help too much for me...)
