  1. This report says exactly what I've been saying for some time now, we identify each other by scores of small, anonymous pieces of information which like pieces of a jigsaw, fit together to make a picture of us. But whereas we humanly might spend hours solving a jigsaw, artificial intelligence software is becoming increasngly better at compiling anonymous pieces from many hundreds of sources and join the meaningless dots in a microsecond to form a picture of each one of us right down to your shoelaces and the name of your dog.

I was speaking to my brother about this not long ago. I said, in what ways do I actually know you? I don't remember your phone number or even the street address offhand without looking in my address book. I don't know your credit card number or bank sort code. I don't know your national insurance number. No, I only know you from millions of tiny pieces of information each of which is anonymous but together in my mind I know exactly who you are. Soon, so will Google.

  2. esme: Glad to hear you enjoyed the mission! :)

I can't remember exactly where the arrow is but yes, it's roughly up there somewhere on or near that light tower. All I remember is that it was intended to be a stray arrow from the parapet target practice. So, if you know where that is, then imagine an archer swinging wide and loosing an arrow. So at least you know the arrow ought to be on that side (which I think is the south side.)

If you can't find it then if it were me I'd restart the FM and set cheats and fly straight up there with the gamma boosted up. Once you know exactly where it should be then you can reload your actual save and check if it's still there. I mean, it might have got knocked down or accidentally frobbed. Maybe another developer removed it? (unlikely) I know it was there.

  3. Yes, thanks Buck28. Glad you like the mission, but as Biker indicates, others have done the recent work so I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those who've worked on bringing it up to speed for v2, especially Biker, while I've not had the time recently. Thanks guys!

That's also true about the A-Z Guide - others have added to and improved it over the years, so thanks for that!

  4. Ah, I already do. My 40" Samsung tv IS my pc monitor. I scarcely watch any tv anymore. I watched something about the space station last week - or maybe that was the week before? This week zero so far. Occasionally there's a movie but all the best movies are stolen by Sky and I refuse to pay a sub AND watch adverts AND suffer aggressive intrusive promos. I can get insulted anytime without having to pay for it.

  5. Well, I'd never buy a Samsung smart tv again for sure. I've got one of the early ones - about 4 or 5 years ago I guess. I never plugged it into the net because I had no connection in this room at that time but now I have. If the newer ones won't work unless you connect (which I think is how the Xbox One (stupid name) is, then that gives me another reason never to get Samsung.

No, my contention is with the counter-intuitive sluggish 'smart' dumb menus. Even after years I still often click it wrongly because it works the opposite both to Windows standard menus and common sense. With Windows you select a menu and then you can select an option on the menu. Simple enough. With Samsung, it automatically shows you the menu contents so you instinctively try to scroll down - but then the menu disappears and you're moved to the next menu (which you also cannot yet access!) No, you have to remember a second click to select the menu that you already have!

GTA5 is the same - but don't get me started on that or I'll have to start a new thread.

My nightmare is that one day real life will be like that. You'll go into a restaurant. The waiter shows you a menu. You point to the roast beef. The waiter ignores you and shows you the dessert menu. You point to the chocolate pudding. It disappears and he shows you the dinners again.

"Sir is very silly, pointing to an unselected menu will get you nothing."

"But you are showing me the friggin' menu!"

"Ah yes, but I'm showing you it so you can decide if it's the menu you want. Then you select it. Sir is very silly."

"So how do I select the menu?"

"First you point to the menu itself of course! Sir is very silly."

"Wouldn't it be easier if I could just point to what I want on the menu you are already showing me?"

"Of course sir, but this is a Samsung restaurant."

  6. I expect future voice compression to be much higher because I have a theory that only voice characteristics will be stored and the actual words will be converted to compressed text. Text back to speech will be far better than now and will be used in all games to gives huge amounts and variations of stored speech. Game developers will likely just type the dialogue they want then choose voice types from a console.

What I mean is, that currently if you record say, an hour of President Obama, you are recording his voice over and over again when all you really want to capture is what he is saying.

I dunno though. Maybe current voice compression samples blocks of similar intonations anyway and only saves each one once?

  7. Yeah, it's a fight everyday against those who try to control us. Some news sites refresh their front page every 5 minutes. It is my habit to scan down the page and open interesting stories in a new tab. Unfortunately, when I'm 3/4 way down, the page refreshes and I'm dumped back at the top thus losing my place. Sometime the subheading I was reading is no longer even there! Fortunately, Opera provides source edit so every day to read the news I remove the refresh line so I can read in peace. It's a sad joke but has to be done........

  8. Now, private UK health records are to be handed over to third parties.

"The data will be stored anonymously, but a patient’s NHS number, postcode, family history, referrals, alcohol consumption and so on will be included." which means it's not anonymous.

    http://www.telegraph...ig-Brother.html

Of course, there will be an 'opt-out' but likely it will be made vague and difficult. The infamous 'opt-out' instead of 'opt-in' gives abusers great power over us. Google and Adobe, for instance, provide an opt-out but it's kept quiet, is awkward to find and manage even if you know about it, and demands in effect that you opt in to a cookie which declares you have opted-out!..

Personally, I log off the internet every morning and log in again to get a new IP address. I've disable cookies and javascript on Google but I also use Duck Duck and other safer search engines. I avoid Flash.

  9. What worries me is that I don't think you're crazy, Jinix.

A gadget has been developed that can be plugged into a car, it overrides the encryption and takes control of brakes, airbag, anything that is under the direction of the onboard computer.

There has been discussion that future legislation will force all new cars to include a police override 'to bring joyriders to a safe halt' but we can expect it to be abused.

Driverless cars are being trialled but the first few generations can be overridden by a human. Once the software can be shown to be safer than a human then that human link into the loop will probably be removed (to reduce traffic accidents which cost the economy money.) From there it's a simple step to take over any car anytime and drive it anywhere.

Mobile phones: I don't even want to talk about how everyone is tracked by them.

Net tracking by Google etc will become more sophisticated. Data sharing will occur. If you know 20 or 30 anonymous things about someone you pretty well know exactly who they are: Accesses from UK; accesses male-oriented sites such as clicking on garments and footwear for middle-aged men so most likely that's what he is; entered post code into a broadband inquiry; bought a dog collar with the name Bozo on it; bought some green paint from Amazon, oh, there's a house with that Ipswitch postcode that's painted the same shade of green. Guess it's Mr Johnson then, I think he wears grey shoes and has a dog called Bozo. It takes a bit of detective work comparing data but that's what AI software does well and does very fast and it will have far more than 20 or 30 'anonymous' bits of data to compare. It's a matter of time until everyone's details will be available on DVD.

You can let the cat out of the bag but it's not so easy to put it back in. It'll be too late then.

  10. I wouldn't mind waiting... a bit. It's just not knowing that is irritating. But presumably the mission must be in all issues. I guess someone will hack it. Once it's out there and customers are buying normally then I don't suppose the producers care. I've forgotten their names already. Do I care? Not really.

  11. Sorry, I'm just posting because my subscription to this thread disappeared months ago and the 'follow this topic' button above doesn't work for me at all anymore! Clicking the button does nothing. So, what can I say...

Clinton? Untrustworthy by definition. Untrustworthy president = bad.

LG? Mental note not to buy any of their smart tvs. In fact, I've long since made a note to avoid anything with the word 'smart' attached because it really means 'will control you because we know best' My Samsung smart tv is an example of dreadful non-standard menu navigation which is still counter-intutive even after four years use.

Webcam: Not got one but if I did I would make sure it's a separate unpluggable.

I had this idea for a spring-loaded widget which holds your read-only (by pc) security data. When buying something on-line, or logging in somewhere, or voting, a standard form pops up saying website is requesting following info: (form) Push in your widget to agree. You push in widget, it uploads to form only the items requested that you see and agreed to, then the spring pops the widget out again (or you can always pull it.) To edit your own secure data you push the widget into a stand-alone, unconnected black box. That's the only way to write to it. Nothing's 100% secure of course so maybe a false website url and false form might retrieve more than you want to give but perhaps web browsers could be made to prevent that? Then of course, a virus could hack the browser...

  12. This extra bank heist mission exclusive to pre-orders, anyone know if it's likely to be available later? Sounds like they are desperate for cash but I'd like to think that someone might later post a code or a way to unlock it. I don't want to pre-order.

  13. Goldwell: You need to look at the material file. A keyword like alpha or alphatest affect the transparency.

SteveL: Don't know but if nobody thinks up a better way, what I would do if I were you is as follows:

If you are triggering the hide/show from a script then set/reset a global variable you can test.

If you are triggering from an entity then put an extra target in and trigger that as well - something that you can detect. Can't think of anything offhand but that might give you a direction in which to look. If not, then ask again about setting up a script if you don't know how - that would likely be much easier.

  14. Aah... Things changed recently with Darkmod Version 2 so that article probably needs adjusting. I'm rather rusty about this but I think if you create a folder called startmap in the darkmod/fms folder then unzip into there. Or it may be the startmap folder is already in the pk4 in which case just extract it into fms. Likely then you can select it in the missions list in Darkmod. Sorry to be so vague but I think once you've done that then you map and dmap it in the console.

There is a possibility that startmap might not work in 2.0 anyway or there might be errors. Hopefully not. It works just like a mission and most of the existing missions were carefully checked to be compatible with Darkmod 2.0 but it is unlikely that startmap was.

There may also be a way to set another folder but without researching it myself I'd best leave it to others.

If you get really stuck though, I'll make an effort to install it myself and take a look.

  15. There's nothing wrong with the xdata stuff. Sotha is right. Just space out using the Enter key in the editor. There should be something on the wiki somewhere. When I created these standard readables guis I made it so you could have two font sizes for anything rather than just a title and body (though they are still named title and body.) So you can put subheadings in further down the page too in large font. Or have everything in large font. Whatever you want. Both fonts fill* the entire page whereas originally readable guis defined the title in a small space only at the top. So, yeah, just linefeed down to avoid overlaps.

Doing it manually in the xdata as I recall there are two ways. The way I use is to put each paragraph in its own quotes so to insert a blank line you literally put in a blank "" on a line on its own. I think that's how the editor generates it too. On the wiki you might find some earlier articles where an end symbol (probably same as C) is used to mark end of line but I'm rusty now so I can't recall exactly. I always thought that was less intuitive to use.

[edit] * By 'fill' I mean the space allotted to both fonts is the entire page so you can type anywhere on any page by spacing along or spacing down.

  16. The clip brushes inside footlockers and cupboards is probably not monster clip but plain clip. It is a special func to set make the contents frobable/not frobable depending on whether the door/lid is open or closed (so you can't frob right through the wall of the locker.) It's not a solid brush in this state. There are several types of clip material - monster only stops AI but there are clips to stop moveables and clips to stop the player, etc. So, if you see 'red', check what's on the surface to see what sort of clip it is and also check if it is worldspawn because there are special funcs that use clip for other purposes (eg, testing end of mission space.

  17. 'web' page - good one! haha! :D

Seriously, consider another possibility. I've not tried this but often the colour and texture help. I recall an old tv thing called snow spider or something that wasn't shuddery at all because it was white. If so, try the following.

    Close darkmod first if open.

Create in your darkmod folder the following folder and subfolders within it:

    models\md5\chars\monsters

Create or find a tiny totally white picture in tga format and put it in that folder and rename it spider.tga

Make copies in the same folder and name them spider_black.tga, spider_child.tga, spider_pale.tga, spider_yellow.tga

Now they should show in game as textureless white and might not be so horrible which means you can play all games and get full gameplay (they can still kill!)

  18. Yes, there are lots of complaints over at fanfiction.net which I frequent. They have just implemented it on story text. The annoying thing is that it doesn't protect anything. Ctrl A still highlights all plus one can save the web page as html or text so what's the point? All it does is annoy legitimate users who want to highlight part of the text.

User complaints are that they need to copy a line from a story to mark how far they have read (bookmarks only mark a web page not a position on the page,) or people with visual impairment use them to convert to speech, others use select to translate into other languages or to look up a word in a dictionary. Another use is to quote when replying to reviews etc. It's immensely irritating and serves no bloody purpose whatsoever.

So far, it's not affected my Opera browser but someone else said it did. There's an add on for Firefox called something like rightToClick or somesuch. Then I think someone mentioned GreaseMonkey or some other Monkey for Chrome.
