  1. Okay, I left it till this morning. Switched on. Didn't change anything. Did exactly as before and this time it connected and updated! So it could only really be server error yesterday I think. So why don't M$oft put up a message try again later?

Oh well, at least I'm playing GTA now and I can take it out on the other characters.

  2. I hardly ever use XBox Live. Months ago since last time but I can't remember how. Now I need to update GTA5 or it says it won't play. Forty quid worth of plastic crap unless I can fix it.

There seems to be two ways: direct to modem or via PC

Connecting to PC seems to require two network connections. I only have one. If there is any way to do via usb then I don't have a cable. All my usb cables have the normal plug at one end that goes in the PC (eg from a drive) plus a different plug at the other end. The XBox USB is the same as the PC. It makes sense that that is the 'controlling' end and the other plugs are 'controllable devices' like a printer or drive.

So, that leave direct to modem. I pulled out my network connection from my PC and plug it in the back of the XBox. Update fails.

    Run Network test.

    It connects to network: OK

    It connects to internet: OK

It then says there's an Xbox update so I say yeah and it says there is an error - run the Network test!!

So repeat but this time I refuse the update and it continues the test and reports an error:

    Status code:

    4099 - 0000 - 3080 - 0504 - 8007 - 2AF9

Google returns one instance of the above which doesn't help.

XBox on line support gone through troubleshooter but doesn't solve it.

Yet I know I've done updates before. Not many. I've used XBox Live about 4 times in 6 years I reckon.

    What else can I try?

Looked at network settings. Reset to factory defaults. Doesn't help.

Go through settings. Mostly I don't know what it means but there is something like this (I can't check because I'm sick of changing plugs back and forth lying on the floor trying to reach around the back of the bloody pc and xbox!:

    User Name:

    Service Name:

    Password:

Does that mean my ISP? But as I recall it said don't use this if you are using a router or modem or something which makes no sense. Anyway, I have a user name and password but what's a service name? Anyway, the telephone line is already connected to them via my pc. Anyway, I'm fairly certain I've never entered those before yet I have used Xbox Live a few times.

    Any ideas?

  3. In a word... money. The startup shop seems to work okay that way. Trade loot for weapons. That will also add a new dynamic to loot gathering especially if there is a non-optional loot objective. The player will have balance his hopes of gathering enough loot against the immediate gain of some water and rope to get into a mansion.

  4. I know all this. But I don't want a world where a friggin' computer algorithm designed by a commercial enterprise whose sole purpose is to make as much money as possible decides what is no longer useful for me. I don't accept it. I will not accept it. I want the choice. Suppose I am a social scientist not interested in the life of the tiger, its habitat, it biology, but I am interested in how people talk about it. How often does it come up conversation? Or a dictionary creator and interested in common useage of words? Or a researcher in English investigating how many people speak about the Siberian Tiger but don't understand what the term means? Or I know an acquaintance put up an article about Siberian Tigers and I can't find it amongst the first 400? Or suppose some other circumstance that neither I nor Google have thought of?.

As I have said, how do you know the rest is not relevant? How does the software know what is in my mind? What is relevant for me? I want the option to see EVERY occurrence of "siberian tiger" that is anywhere on the internet. And I, myself, will decide what is relevant.

Not so long ago we did have the choice. It was never a problem to stop reading at the point I chose nor do I remember anyone else complaining about being forced at gunpoint to keep reading irrelevant material.

I ask everyone here: would you object to or be offended if Google provided an option to see all the results? If so, why? And if no one, then where is the harm in including that option like it always used to be?...

  5. Yeah, DuckDuckGo is good. I use them now and again but miss the non-symbol advanced input and other easily-applied filters. I mean, it's like returning to Dos from Windows. Enter args instead of clicking an option.....

It returns about 900 results. It doesn't number them nor claim there are any more. Likely it's getting the same 900 from google.........

Trying to think of another example. Suppose you collect limericks? Google claims about 2 million but returns about 500. Only then can you continue in which case it starts right at the beginning again with the ones you've already seen. Then it returns 900. Sound familiar? There may be another 50,000 or 500,000 or even 2 million of interest but you will never be allowed to discover if they are relevant because papa Google knows what's best for us little children........

  6. Thanks, Lux. The main thing there I didn't know is the scholar version of google which is worth checking out now and again.

I note that scholars are allowed to up the results to 20 on a page. Gee, thanks google, that's feinted out for the other two billion users unless (I think) they sign in so google can track them. Their excuse is that it slows things down - yeah, by milliseconds. But Mr Google, don't you know we spend well over a full second jumping from page to page instead? More if I have to reach for my mouse to click the link and my siberian tiger has knocked it on the floor.

The related searches I always assumed were included in the general search - logically they should be but then again, this is google so I'll check them out. I have, of course, previously clicked on one if it catches my eye as absolutely nailing what I'm looking for.

Your particle physics -string -theory will also exclude anything with string in it and anything with theory in it. You should use particle physics -"string -theory"

I wonder what the 'related' tilde does? I mean, what could be related to siberian tiger that doesn't include the 'siberian tiger' anyway? Again, it might be something that logically ought to be in the general search so might be worth exploring.

Put it another way, if there were another independent search engine identical to google but they provide all results for the user to decide what's relevant and what isn't, then I would use that service instead. :)

  7. I think you're all missing the point. Let's try a couple of examples.

Say I want to news about Syria or the spelling of platypus. I get lots of results and quickly find what I want on the first page.

But suppose I'm a university student researching say, the siberian tiger? It says there's about a million results but I only get 300 odd results. It adds there are more but they are similar and I can repeat the search with them included. It doesn't say you can continue the search or that it will highlight the ones I've not just been studying all morning. No, it does the entire search again.

Now, it shows 900-odd. Okay, I work forward. (Note that they have long since removed the option that is available on every other 'previous-next' options you will see by the billion everywhere, namely, to jump forward in large leaps or go to the end. No, you have to manually go forward ten at a time (yes, you can change that but then you need to enable cookies, probably javascript, etc.)

Right, I work to the end. These look very relevant to me and I'll really like to continue sifting through the results... But I can't; the other 999,000 are denied me.

How do they know there are a million results if they've not searched? They might have an index of their index listing occurrences but they can't do that for every occurrence of every combination of words and filters.

Why don't they store the position they reached in the search then offer a 'continue search' option? Why does dumb software decide for me what is relevant. Maybe I just want to see how people refer to the siberian tiger no matter how irrelevantly?

And how does anyone know they are irrelevant? Do you trust Google? Do you trust monoploy-controlled commercial software to make decisions for you with no override? Is the entire English-speaking half of planet Earch reliant on these idiots? (erm... yes.)

What harm is there in them showing what they think is irrelevant anyway? The more I continue searching the more adverts they can present to me and the more money they can make.

It can't be storage space. We're not talking about masses of images nor even text, nor even compressed text. We're talking about index links to the position they reached in their search.

Shall we give them the benefit of the doubt? Do we trust commerce in general to be open and honest with us?

Search engines are our only real window onto the internet. There is no other way of looking at what is there. This window is only open a tiny crack.

Listen, if I don't find the antidote for my siberian tiger then it's google's fault the species died out...

  8. Okay guys, let me rephrase my question:

Why do search engines not show all results? For instance, Google might say it has 1000 results but only shows about 400.

When doing serious research, browsing over a list of 400 to see what may be relevant might only take a few minutes. I want to see the other 600.

Why do they brag about how many they have found but refuse to show them? For what purpose?

If have moderate filtering set I think (hard to say because Google are so obscure about this) but how can this have any affect when searching for normal search terms?

Presumably it means some web sites will never show, never be seen by anyone because they are not in the top 400. The Information Highway has been reduced to Sample Street - whatever Google choose for you to see.

  9. It's possible to do a seamless swap with an identical AI from a blueroom who is blind, deaf, lacking in touch, etc. using a script that copies origin and orientation. Need to consider any carried items, energy left, etc. Might work depending on setup. I don't think you can change visual acuity etc dynamically but its worth checking eg, S & R.

  10. I'm trying to fix the tdm water in Heart because it lost its water properties: splash etc. This is in Dark Mod 2.0. Tried lots of things and dmpapping on every try without success. Changed depth, removed all worldspawn that was intruding into the water. Split water entity into 4 separate entities. No luck. Finally changed sides and bottom from nodraw to caulk. Voila - it works. But why? Anybody else using working water with nodraw?

  11. Sakonosolo: Sorry, missed this. There's a big thread for Heart here...

so if you have any further problems I recommend you post there.

[EDIT SORRY- this IS the thread! It's me that's in the wrong thread. I thought this was a dev thread link.]

Meanwhile, as to your specific problem:

As I recall there is info in a book or scroll in one or both of the footlockers in the women's quarters (ground floor, south west area.) From memory you grab a chair from the middle of the library and stand it near the bookshelf to the north of that nearby. Stand on it and search the books for a trigger. Click it and it opens a bookshelf nearby to the east. I can't remember but I think after a few seconds it closes again so if you don't find it fairly quickly then throw the switch again.

  12. Is this widely known? I mean, if it solves the rotation problem it is kind of mega! So... it would work on a roomful of furniture, torches, etc? Or turn one of those big cupboard prefabs I made 45 degrees? I spent ages making 4 separately-rotated prefabs of each of those.

Perhaps DR could simply create a temporary invisible worldspawn brush around selections during rotations then remove it after.

  13. Most common cause is probably clicking the Preview button then thinking it's posted - I've done that quite a few times. I've been trying to develop the habit of ctrl A then ctrl C to copy the text to the clipboard before posting just in case but it's not infallible.

I frequently type into a plain text editor and save it locally then paste it into a forum editor if the text is substantial.

  14. I think I've worked out what the fault was. I previously had javascript set in Site Preferences but not globally. Natually, I checked previously that javascript was enabled for Youtube and, of course, it was - but in Site Preferences only. So clearly, these extensions in Opera, and likely in Firefox too, are not testing Site Prefs, they are just testing the javascript global setting (unless it's the browser make the mistake for all extensions?)

So... I have javascript enabled for Youtube in Site Prefs but it doesn't work. I set it it the global prefs and the download button appears. Unset it and the button disappears.

  15. Thanks. I finally bit the bullet, uninstalled then totally wiped Opera (after saving what settings I could find) then reinstalled. So, for the first time I can see a button on a web page and downloaded a video! I used that download as MP4 one but later I might try some of the others again too.

Still have to sort out Opera though... :( I put the profile folder back and I'm hopeful about importing my bookmarks but the config is messed up. I'll check what ini files I backed up. I don't want to copy back anything that might mess up extensions again.

    Thanks again for all support.
