  1. Another way, I'm not sure but I think there is a run spawnarg or alwaysrun or somethingso if you can find that then set it to 0 to begin with then in the conv first set that spawnarg to 1 before you send him off.

    On the other hand, I might be confusing it with a run spawnarg on a path point which make an AI run to it so maybe that's worth investigating to see if you can work it in.

    In Alchemist I recall that when you release the prisoner he tries to run to the abandoned house near the start. Don't recall how I did that but worth looking at that too (that might have been just a path run though)

  2. The lighting and contrast is fine but make sure it's not darker in the final version else the bottom half might be really cursed by shadow and the title lost. It looks like filtered and processed daylight which gives it a moonlit feel. It has a mysterious feel which is good. The tiny gleam of moon/sunlight is just right.

    As said by others, the author name is a problem. Firstly, get the font for that changed if nothing else. It could be montotype or else manually spaced and badly so. Look at the space between i and s then s and h for instance. Also it is rather too cramped horizontally - look how narrow the capital R is for instance. As for position and size, ask your artist friend (or yourself if you have the source art with its layers) to experiment with a better font but 50% to 75% bigger but then offset that dominance with slight translucency and possibly faint outline. He has an eye for layout so if he has a second look you can probably trust his judgement on that. Black is probably right for that; any pronounced colour might clash with the general tone and the translucency will help it blend.

    Good luck with the novella. :)

  3. Yes, it's not easy. Two possible solutions:

    Both graphic and text centred with a contrasting dark colour border on either side, ie, not quite black but very dark red/purple or whatever. That gives the graphic a frame and is relatively easy to set up.

    The other solution is partly an art solution. The top graphic is partly obscured but it looks misty. Extend the graphic 'infinitely' towards the right and centre the text on top of it. To do that, the graphic needs some extra art (approx 1/4th width that is there. Beyond that it should be plain grey to match the main grey on the background at right as it is. Then blur it and/or fade it away over the new part. What you end up with is the current graphic gradually blurring and fading away to the right all the way to the right side of the screen with the text block centred on top (but it's obscuration will vary depending on the zoom I think I'm not sure so it the part of the graphic it obscures will vary). Because the right side of the graphic is all blank it does not waste a lot of file space in a jpg so the image can be made wider than the widest usual current res (eg 2500 or 3000 pixels wide It needs to be done so it doesn't force a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen. I forget how that is done but it can be done. as I recall one way is to make that a background (then as I recall it gets tricky for different browsers.)

    You can see something vaguely like this here:

    http://fidcal.com/Storygazer/index.htm

    If you zoom that in and out you see the effect. The graphic is always locked top left while the text block is always centred.

    although my graphic fades quickly the principle is the same. That graphic could reach all the way across.

    Long time since I did that. For all I know it doesn't work in all browsers.

  4. That's normal. It's not centred and it's a fixed-width table in pixels I guess. The best way is for the website to set the main table to a percentage of the width and centre it then it works on all resolutions. As it is, It only looks normal on a low res screen. You can zoom in using keypad + or Ctrl + or Ctrl mousewheel depending on browser. I get it roughly centred if I zoom into about 150% or 160% (My default res is 1680 x 1050 so it would need more zooming for 1920 x )

  5. I am in shock. Just begun watching Zemeckis' CGI Xmas Carol of 2009 and it is astonishing on every level. Sumptuous visuals, wonderful performances, glorious scenes, actions, facial expressions, views, motions, lighting, etc., and, of course, Dickens' dialogue.

    Immersion? Better believe it. It seized me. Imprisoned me. I could not tear away until after Marley's ghost scene and then only because I have things to do. Every single second was fascinating.

    If I had to fault it on an artistic level then perhaps some of the camera positions and swoops indulge physically impossible shots, weaving through crowds, over roofs, through glass, through a wreath. These moves are great but reminded me that I was looking at CGI. I never give anything a score of 100 but if I give this movie say, 99.9 on what I've seen so far then deduct 0.00001 for these camera positions. Having said that, I'm kind of glad they are there. Does that even make sense? :D

    On a Thief/Dark Mod inspirational level there is so much here that I don't even know where to start. The rooftop scenes. The front of Scrooge's house. His armchair by the fire. The snow in the street. The characters. Imagine a Thief-like game of this quality!

    I've always liked the story but this blows away every version I've ever seen. It is powerful. Do not miss it.

  6. I like it. It does take boolean operators (though you have to search for it) but no special fields for them. I'm on the fence here. operators can be faster once you're used to them but I've got used to separate fields. The advantage of a single input is less clutter I suppose. I'll try both these - DuckDuckGo and Start Page. They both look more secure than Google that's for sure.

    I wonder if DuckDuckGo is a meta search or does it have its own search engine? I'll take a look on Wikipedia.

  7. If the model is .ase then you might copy the file and edit it in a plain text editor to change the texture then save it in a new name. Can't really do that with .lwo files though.

    Another way might be to copy the original texture shader and change that. Of course, if you also use the original in your map then that will change too.

  8. It's not the local cookies I'm concerned about - I can control those. By default, all my local cookies are deleted when I close my browser - except the ones I want. No, it's the multiple secret distant cookies holding information about you - the ones they make it difficult to control (you actually need a local cookie to opt out of the distant cookies and their name is legion, an unclean spirit.)

  9. Okay, thanks. First I have to say I did, of course, first use google to search for the operators. That was how I reminded myself of date: which now seems to be obsolete because it merely returned results that included date: within them! I only looked at a few search results, including Google's own help, but without success. I didn't see that website you first posted (which incidentally had nothing about date or time that I could see.)

    The Julian thing I'll keep note of - though it's tortuously inconvenient. I'll see if it can default to today for the latest term. I'll also take another look for a metasearch engine that links to google and does what google ought to do.

    Now and again I search for other search engines but they're limited and dreadful compared to google.

  10. Think there used to be a google date operator - date:N where N is within last N months. Now google advanced search has a date option but I notice it does not insert an operator like, for instance, site: does.

    Okay, why don't I use advanced search? Well I do but I no longer trust google so I've disabled javascript for them. So, that means some options work and some don't. The only way I'll use javascript with google is to afterwards disconnect and log in again to get a new IP address.

    So, my question is, does anyone know if there is a new date operator to limit search results?

  11. I had some bad experiences with ISPs including PlusNet and others. Eventually I searched around for what appeared to be a reliable ISP: Madasafish only to find out after a year or so that PlusNet had (I thought at that time) take it over covertly. I now think in fact that Madasafish was always a rebadged subsidiary toy of PlusNet. Now, reading this thread, I did a little more searching and find they are both (along with many others) all owned by BT.

    Resistance is futile. There is no escape. None of them can be trusted. It's all an effect of the nature of commerce which, being profit-driven, and given humankind's basically selfish nature, must be evil. There is no way out. The so-called free market system is inherently a bad process. It's probably the best system we can have right now but it maintains its balance like the law of the jungle - survival of the fittest. Billions of creatures suffer and are discarded daily for the benefit of the overall process. It works - but at a terrible price.

  12. One possibility is the video player has somehow turned up the desktop brightness to max out or to a resolution that your monitor cannot handle. But then again, I'd have thought safe mode would deal with that.

    You might try fiddling with the monitor settings (the physical controls on the monitor) while the white shows. If nothing shows in the white then leave it but if you get the monitor's menu then see what video options there are, eg, turning down bright or change the resolution to its native res. Dunno, just guessing here.

  13. Others can advise you better than I but a few things to consider:

    At what point in the boot up does it freeze? Do you see the desktop or a black screen?

    What changes did you make during or after your last working session?

    If you've disconnected and reconnected anything, check your monitor cable is in the right socket. Maybe you have on-board graphics and have added a card or even have twin cards. If the cable is connected to the basic one then the boot up sequence shows okay but Windows is trying to use the other socket so you get a black screen - strictly speaking not a freeze because Windows is running normally but can't display.

    Have you changed any drive settings? Maybe it's trying to boot from a non-active partition? Same applies if you changed partition settings.

    Any error messages show? (I presume not or you would have said.)

    If it comes to having to start again then consider taking that drive out and putting in a clean one so you can hopefully then access your old drive via a usb caddy and recover anything important from the last week.

    If Windows shows but freezes, check keyboard and mouse connections.

    Lots of things it could be.

  14. One way might be create a global float at the top of your script file, eg,

    float SoundPlaying ;

    In your script even put the call to the sound within an if...

    if (SoundPlaying == 0)

    {

    [trigger sound here]

    SoundPlaying = 1;

    sys.wait(N); // (where N is the length in seconds of the sound file)

    SoundPlaying = 0; // reset global

    }

  15. Parallel worlds are conjecture so it may be everything we do is pointless or it may not. One can imagine a parallel universe where our moral decisions produce different paths in different universes so then those decisions do matter (morally.) But one can equally speculate that it might work randomly and everything is meaningless. Or one might assume it works randomly but within your own universe moral choices are still meaningful. I would. If I knew for certain that in other universes I would be performing every possible variation of behaviour that is possible I still would consider what I do in this one as meaningful. But that's just my viewpoint. No use coming to any conclusion either way until they find out the truth.

    One theory is that even the laws of physics may be different in alternate universes so without nuclear forces then matter might never form in some. Perhaps one and one are not two so chaos reigns and intelligence never evolves in some universes. All conjecture.

    Then again, the whole concept of what we call universes may be just a limited perception of some greater one-verse and the universes are mere viewpoints of one thing.

    Then again the situation might be something nobody has even thought of yet.

  16. I have not been able to find a way of adding a hud to a camera. :mellow:

    A bit of Dark Mod history this reminded me of. The first FM, Thief's Den, was made before missions could be completed. There was a Mission Complete screen but not implemented in-game yet. Fresh from Dromed's improvisations, what I did was point a camera at an entity gui pointing at the mission_complete.gui and teleported the player into a black room with a speaker playing the fanfare! I don't recall if any keys worked other than Esc to exit after that but I think I can claim to be the first person to play a Dark Mod mission to completion! Tada!

    Loot objectives also were not working yet. I created a trigger counter and counted loot frobs manually!

    Once we proved how close we were to completable missions then loot objectives and Mission Complete, etc. were implemented and the demo released working normally. I still have the original map though if we ever have a Dark Mod museum. Just browsed it but not tried to see if it still works.

  17. Sorry, this is my fault. Looks like I omitted the devpath thing in my answer. That should fix it. Also, when normally developing you enter map in the consoling but to test the whole thing, briefing, shop, etc you need to put it in currentfm.txt before launching Darkmod then run it from the mission menus. I've not actually done that since the changes but presumably it still works.

  18. No, put the mission folder in the doom folder as before. The fms folder can be for just released fms. Remove it from there or there may be conflict. I think there is a way to run it there but I can't recall the args. Seems simpler to me to keep development projects separate in the doom folder like we've always done.
