  1. Don't worry about. Animations don't need the shadowmesh.
  2. Okay, I missed your other post (I've only been awake for a couple of hours & I'm not a morning person): http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?s=&am...st&p=122467 It sounded clearer than dynamic mics so I was wondering . . . I plan on starting my own online mastering service eventually so I need to pay attention to that stuff. I'd love to take a stab at it! That's more than I did when I had a drumset in the basement at the last house I have 1.5 & 2.0 installed. I love voxengo plugins, nice & transparent. The elephant limiter is a helluva lot better than Audition's. Maybe it's not his voice but how it's mixed. Okay, now this next post . . . VH's 1984 remastered. UGH! Severe clippage. No wonder why I didn't listen to it very much. Ouch. It shows . . . If you can afford it (it's not expensive) try to make some broadband absorbers. Essentially they're wood frames with Owens-Corning 703/705 fiberglass with some kind of acoustically transparent material covering those. I couldn't find any rigid fiberglass so I bought Sound Choice fiberboard from Home Depot:http://www.temple.com/fiberboard/fbsound.html Those have a layer of acoustic foam with fabric covering those. I should post some pics sometime. I can't find the tut on the broadband absorbers but just google for DIY acoustic treament.
  3. Don't get sucked into the loudness wars please http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudness_war http://www.barrydiamentaudio.com/loudness.htm http://www.collisiondetection.net/mt/archi...out_a_viny.html http://www.mindspring.com/~mrichter/dynamics/dynamics.htm Also a few questions: How's your listening environment? Is your mixing/mastering room acoustically treated? What reference monitors (speakers) do you use? Do you use subwoofers or headphones to mix/master? An acoustically treated room is probably the most important thing when you're an audio engineer. You have to watch out for standing waves & reflections that can cause frequency cancellations. Room EQ Wizard is a free utility that tests room acoustics. Good reference monitors mean your mixes translate better to different listening environments like your home stereo, car stereo, ipods, etc. One possible reason your mixes may lack a low end is you're using subwoofers or headphones to mix. If you're using subs then they need to match seamlessly with the rest of your system. I used RoomEQ with my surround sound receiver & found that some frequencies canceled each other out around the 90-100 Hz area. I flipped the phase on the subs & that solved the problem. http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/ If you use headphones to mix, often check those mixes on decent monitors. Only using headphones is a big no-no. It's hard to judge the stereo image, it's too "personal" and "in your face", and mixes I heard on headphones have too much bass because people often compensate too much. Here's some other links to check out: http://www.soundonsound.com/forum http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/May03/arti...udioinstal4.asp http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html http://emusician.com/tutorials/emusic_doit...ring/index.html http://www.tweakheadz.com/mastering_your_audio.htm Honestly I think the mixing needs a lot more work.
  4. Hey Fingernail! I don't keep up with this style so I don't know how to categorize it The closest I get get is progressive (Green Day? I don't listen to those guys so I don't know). Anyway I like the music but not too keen on the vocals. Also I've been working on my mastering skills: http://home.comcast.net/~alter-id/audio/mp3player.html & check out my SoundClick page on my sig. If you'd like me to take a stab at mastering your stuff, PM me & we could work something out. As for the mixes: - The bass drifts in & out (the lower notes stick out too much & disappears in the mix every now & then) - The drums are too subdued on some tracks (& I like the drums on these tracks). Could use more kick &snare. - The drums on some tracks are also too right channel centric. They should be more centered. - the voice is too upfront - sonically they vary a lot from track to track (one reason for mastering) Ouch, I just loaded these into Audition. "Call it Off" through the rest of the album are severely clipped. The only ones not clipping are #1 "Youth", #2"Days", & #8 "Jason". If you did get these mastered & if you paid money for it, ask for your money back I didn't catch this since I didn't listen all the way through (and I listened to it on my mac which doesn't have the greatest sound). You lose a lot of the definition, and a lot of distortion (and I can hear the distortion in the bass which is pretty bad), with severely clipped digital audio. The vocals suffer as well. Also the low end (below 100 Hz or so) needs to be mono. That's one of the reasons why the bass is so weak. If the low end isn't in mono, then there's a strong chance of the bass being out of phase with the rest of the music (which happens around 3:05 in "Tomorrow"). I realize these are mp3s encoded at 128 Kbps. A better option for mp3 would be 192. EDIT: I've been playing around with "Rick's House" (catchy tune, BTW) and due to the severe compression/clipping & low bitrate mp3 artifacts, this could've been engineered a lot better. The vocals totally drown out the rest of the band with the exception of the guitar. Also work on vocal recording techniques. Often the singers hit the "h" on house & that produces low frequency stuff that really belongs with the bass & kick. Position the mic better so the singers don't sing into the diaphragm straight on. Maybe aim it at an angle. De-essers might help the vocals and apply a nice low frequency roll-off to get rid of those hard "h"s and "p"s. EDIT2: I just read the MySpace blog & you're using SM58s on the vocals . . . tape a pencil on the head to lessen percussives on the vocals . . .
  5. Congrats, NH How was the rest of the concert? The Aerosmith guys are getting pretty old by now
  6. Okay, I'll stop experimenting with pink noise for a while This instrumental rock track was conceived and produced over this weekend Drifting Sands hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...583163&q=hi
  7. Staying with the idea of working with pink noise, I created drums sounds: Pinky Beats (beware, lo-fi sucks) lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...562775&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...562775&q=hi For the drums sounds (all sounds on this track were created from pink noise) I first generated pink noise Trimmed the time to whatever I thought was appropriate Applied a dynamics envelope for the attack and decay Used various EQs to get the sound I wanted Applied some reverb Then I arranged everything in a multitrack editor Sometimes I wonder about myself
  8. Yet another house built in 7 days I spent about 3 hours at the reveal which was only a few miles north of us. It was an interesting experience. Over a thousand people gawking at the celebrities while the production crew had the audience act like the Byer family got home (which was about 1 1/2 hours before they actually did). It was around 85 degrees Fahrenheit and 50% humidity & it was quite uncomfortable for a while. Here's an excerpt from http://www.extrememakeoveroregon.com/: Here's a few pics of my experience with so-called "reality" tv: http://picasaweb.google.com/ascottk/Extrem...yerFamilyReveal The official t-shirt: The camera dolly: Ty: Some of the design team: "Boey" with her mom, dad, grandpa, and Ty: The family in front of their home: I hear the episode will air in late September or early October on ABC so you might see me in the audience! I ended up taking a lot of video too.
  9. There's still a few days to go! I forgot how many times I voted so far
  10. Some audiophiles might be interested in this Using the copy/paste functions using Adobe Audition's spectral editing tools, I wrote my name with pink noise. 11. Yep This was before I had any theory background. NH, hopefully you guys will get some recordings together soon . It's hard to hear the vocals but it I like what I hear so far!
  12. Cool If you ever get to recording stuff, try out soundclick.com. It's a free service, limited to 128 kBps & 10 MB mp3 for a non-VIP account (any bitrate up to 40 MB for VIP @ $9.99 a month). I just uploaded some instrumental rock I recorded in 1999 & last week (lo-fi links sound like crap): What It's All About (I did have a small vocal part but I cut it in this mix) lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484710&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...d=5484710&q Willow and the Wind lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484782&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484782&q=hi Sounds Like Trouble lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484745&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484745&q=hi Wishing Well lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484790&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...484790&q=hi & here's some improv stuff I recorded with my friend Nick: Lonely Night Improv with Nick Moore lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...486297&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...486297&q=hi Bluesy Improv with Nick Moore lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...486270&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...486270&q=hi Groove Thing Improv with Nick Moore lo-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...486282&q=lo hi-fi URL: http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m...486282&q=hi Anyway, It'd be great for your band to have demo mp3s/CDs so you can get more gigs.

  14. I should have mentioned this a long while ago (actually I covered this in the belcher thread): http://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?showt...=5452&st=75 Anything that's inheriting from atdm:ai_base tend to stand around when they should be attacking. I think most of the focus has been on atdm:ai_humanoid which has more functionality than the base. I think we should have atdm:ai_nonhuman because ai_base is pretty thin. So I think the problems you're facing with the bot is the lack of ai_base functionality.
  15. I think he's referring to the layers of negatives over the lens. Digital cameras can pick up infrared. To test it just point a remote control at the camera. Here's where I picked up using undeveloped negatives: http://www.instructables.com/id/E7OGJGKPAXEZ7BDYA9 It's pretty fun!
  16. What anims are you referring to? The only one I can think of is the death & search anim & I only modified those. oDDity is the original animator for these. There's no real standard, just what looks good & natural. I'm not sure how the blend anims operate. We need to have the origin move or they'll walk in place. First animate them like they're walking in place then move the origin (which should move the whole mesh) so it'll match the animations. If you're having a hard time matching the footsteps, like the feet are sliding around, modify the animation so to match the origin movement. It's been too long since I looked at it. I think I added it for some odd reason or another I'll get back to you if I remember why. If ik is working right in max, you should be able to drag the waist bone up & still have the feet planted on the ground (depending on how high you drag up though). I do have experience in max but not with the ik stuff. 0, 0, 0 will always be on the ground (except for jumping, running, or walking) so moving the origin up will actually move the mesh into the ground. You should be able to stretch the bone between the origin & waist, but my max experience is slim.
  17. Well, walk ik in doom & ik in max/maya are two different things. D3 doesn't use the ik information on a md5mesh/anim. D3 walk ik is defined in the def file. IK in max/maya are useful for animators because you don't need to animate every single joint. It's best to look through the spider or the trite def file to see how walk ik is used.
  18. Everything seems to be pretty stable. Max/MSP, Protools, Audition 2, and TDM seem to be running pretty well on this system. The only thing wrong so far is the new usb2 hub & the mouse freezes up every now & then. Overall I'm pretty happy with it so far.
  19. I've been having fun with the Sanyo Xacti C40 especially with taping a couple layers of undeveloped negatives over the lens : http://picasaweb.google.com/ascottk/NearInfrared & some other nature photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/ascottk/NaturePictures (many taken with Fuji Finepix cameras):
  20. I finally got up to posting those recording session pictures on google's picasa web albums: http://picasaweb.google.com/ascottk/WOUFil...ecordingSession Chris Thomas With the Western Oregon University Chamber Singers
  21. I thought I'd share some of the audio I recorded/edited the last three months. https://darkmod.homelinux.com/svn/sound_src/sounds_ask So far: squeaky faucets squeaky doors a couple of drum hits a yard stick (could be an arrow getting embedded in wood or something) creaky oven door drummed washer/dryer (single hits) single hits on cooking pots ratchet sounds (which might be useful for baddcogs's bots or the clicking of the spiders)
  22. If you want to group joints in a body, you'll need to be specific about the contained joints. Let's say we have origin, joint_1 through joint_8, and joint_a through joint_f. You want to group origin through joint_6, joint_7 through joint_c, then joint_d through joint_f: body "base" { ... containedJoints "*origin -*joint_7" //anything starting at origin through joint_6 } body "middle" { ... containedJoints "*joint_7 -*joint_d" //joint_7 through joint_c } body "top" { ... containedJoints "*joint_d" //everything above and starting with joint_d } So if you have a declaration of "*joint" it'll include everything above that joint in the hierarchy. Things not to do: body "base" { ... containedJoints "*origin -*joint_7" //anything starting at origin through joint_6 } body "middle" { ... containedJoints "*joint_5 -*joint_d" //oops, joint_5 & 6 is already contained in body "base"! } body "top" { ... containedJoints "*joint_b" //oops, joint_b & joint_c is already contained in body "middle"! } So no overlapping contained joints or you'll get that error.
  23. Ugh, I hate AFs . . . Anyway, some potential problems: Joint hierarchies, and potentially the original joint not in lower case on the model (don't quote me on that). Contained joints in a body. Suppose . . . origin |_ lower joint |_middle joints up to upper joints If you want only the origin joint, just containedJoints "origin" (no asterisk). If you want to group joints like the lower & middle: containedJoints "*middle_first -*middle_last" (space between the first joint & the dash but not after the asterisk). If you want to contain everything above, & including, a joint: containedJoints "*upper_joints" Aside from having no constraints types, I can't really see what's wrong by looking at it. Here's oDD's wiki topic on editing AFS: http://www.thirdfilms.com/darkwiki/index.p...int_Hierarchies Also, Doom 3's AF folder has a lot of examples you can look around (extract one of the pk4's from the Doom3/base directory.
  24. Just use the main pose as the af. For the characters I justs used the t-pose.
