  1. Lxqt is more comparable to xfce since they're both de's. I find only openbox (wm) a little too limited.

I once combined xfce with openbox as wm. But nowadays it doesn't give you enough extra speed I think.

  2. The license.text (you can find it in the root of tdm install) says this:

    Quote

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all maps, textures, models, def files, audio
assets, and all other non-software components that are distributed with The Dark Mod
are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0
    Unported license, as specified at
    http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/legalcode
    and described at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/

Any missions downloaded through the ingame downloader, the TDM website or external
sources are the property of their respective authors, and different licensing may apply.
Without explicit permission from the mission authors, you may not redistribute, modify
or reuse (parts of) these missions or the assets contained within them.

Anyway, I don't really understand what you want. I think enough has been said no? You posted about the stuff that you think needs fixing. Maybe someone picks it up and it gets fixed.

  3. Btw. the wiki says:

    Quote

Many controls can be included in the file Doomconfig.cfg in the darkmod folder so they are automatically effective.

    Should this be:

    Quote

Many controls can be included in the file Darkmod.cfg in the darkmod folder so they are automatically effective.

    ?

  4. Well I tried it on another computer and there it doesn't work either.

So when you do that command, you get an extra gasarrow in your inventory?

    Never mind 😐

This does not mean you cant have some nice app you need which was built against say gnome because you sit on a plasma desktop, you absolutely can but they are only avaliable as snap / flatpaks so each of them run in its own sandbox with all the dependencies only avaliable to said program and keept isolated from the system.

So you are saying that if you use for example the xfce edition, you can't install kde-specific software that is in the package manager of Solus? Snap and Flatpack don't count.

For my next install I'll might try a kde edition, because I use a lot of kde software. I don't like some of the default behavior of kde, so I would have to tweak it more. XFCE is almost perfect from the start in my experience.

manjaro was one of my earlier favorites in the linux world, sadly the last time i tried it, it would not play ball with my hardware and also had a bit of the same problem most other mainstream distros have where you could install stuff not native to the kernel and hence break everything

I think that's just a matter of selecting the right Kernel. You can install different kernels and then select the one that works for you.

The other issue is don't install AUR packages and you can revert your system back with Timeshift (or just a backup). You can boot up a Manjaro live usb stick and restore the local snapshot. Well anyway, I was always able to resolve issues up to now.

But I'll try Solus sometime. I see Solus is rolling, that's great. What do you think of Budgy WM?

  7. Thanks for the info, although I didn't read anything exciting over using Manjaro xfce. But nice to hear about another distro that is good.

I moved to Manjaro when Windows 7 got out of support. I find Windows 11 not that different from Windows 10 and worse in some (minor) places.

  8. I was testing some missions with all the ai barks on and the issue I see is that for a lot of the subs I see on screen I can't hear the sound. Maybe I should only hear the sounds in a specific radius? Also, I think ai barks shouldn't show when story subs are on screen?

Some subs have sugestive text, like what the tone of the voice is. Is that something that could be added as an option?

  9. Could someone try to do the entity spawning via console? I can't get it working anymore. If I do the command, I get no error, but I don't get the item. For example:

    spawn atdm:ammo_gasarrow

    Does nothing

    Tested in 2 missions

  10. Interesting. I didn't know about Doom 3 co-op (I don't know why).

Instead of all being in the same place inside the mission, missions could be designed around locations (in the same map). So you play each your own part, but objectives are shared. So you play different mission objectives around the same global objective. It means also that a player could find a clue when reading a book but another player has to do that objective.

    So for example:

    Shared mission objectives:

    • Find the ring of Thruth (Church section)  - Player A
    • Find information about hidden loot (Thief hideout)  - Player B
    • Search for a clue about the hidden passage in the Church (library section)  - Player C

So when Player C finds the info in the library section, Player A can find that hidden passage in the church section.

One appealing aspect of the Debian repository is that it is a curated collection of software (currently some 60 000 packages) that is hosted by the Debian project. I perceive an inclusion there (right or wrong) as a stamp of approval.

An AppImage is something TDM would host ourselves and any prospective user would have to find us by themselves first, right? In that case the current installer works just fine. But I know little about this. Maybe you can elaborate?

    Well there is for example:

    https://www.appimagehub.com/

I actually like programs to be self contained, so I can move them around at will and easilly modify the files (this is more important with tdm) as well, so probably it wouldn't be for me anyway.

Apart from that, many (Linux) gamers use an Arch -type distro (I use Manjaro), so for that the Debian repo is not useful. I'm in favor of a universal Linux version approach and your idea kind of goes against that.

  12. Personally I'm strongly against using:

    Wind in the Willows, The

That look just sucks and makes no sense to me. It's i.m.h.o. not true alphabetic sorting.

Also, I would think that in the above example someone could think that Willows is the most important and so it should be:

    Willows, The Wind in the

    I prefer:

    The Wind in the Willows

That is the whole title and the The at the start is just as important as any other word in it. Otherwise why would the author put it there? You should assume it's important.

I think it should at least be possible that I can change the way this shows by edditting Gui files (or by a cvar). If that is possible I'll will do that (just as I made the install_splash.tga show without transperancy applied). I think currently that isn't possible.

  13. I'm not sure if it's in TDM's interest to serve a "libre" version that essentially is cripled until you add the non-free content.

Making an AppImage version of TDM seems more interesting.

  14. Looking at that Winter landscape picture I would love to see a mission where you click on the painting and get transported to that place. This would actually be a cool mission hub..

Another cool idea is to make paintings out of TDM screenshots, which then are some sort of easter eggs. Maybe add some filters to make it look like a painting. I quite liked spotting paintings of screenshots of some of graiman's missions.

The contents of some chests and small containers like drawers will sometimes not become frobable when you open that container: You may need to close the door and open it again, after which you can frob any scrolls / keys / etc inside. Most likely something is happening with target_setfrobable getting triggered at the wrong time.

    See this post:

I wonder if it could be modified so that the set_frobable could be done when box is at a quarter of open animation.

Even when they are frobable, tiny items in small containers will sometimes only highlight from a very specific position and angle: I've had cases where I needed to lean forward and look at a coin just right and it would only highlight when my crosshair was on that one pixel.

I think that this has to do with frob-distance and/or if the container where the item is in also has frob-higlight. It think that when the box is opened, frob-highlight for the box-body should be enabled.

So the best would be probably:

    • If box is closed, whole box should have frob-highlight enabled.
    • When box is open, only lid should have frob-highlight enabled.

This should be applied to all core prefabs.

I also have this sometimes with messages sticking to doors, where it is very difficult to frob the message or door.

Do you they work well enough now? Are there issues with stencil shadows? I remember early posts mentioning that.

They don't work with stencil shadows. If a player has stencil shadows enabled, the volumetric lights have forced shadow maps enabled, while other lights have still stencil shadows. So it will just work.

I think it will have a performance hit (also because the mentioned forced shadow maps I assume), but the mission overal is not very demanding?

Afaik volumetric lights is enabled with a spawnarg. So via a trigger/script this setting can be changed? Not sure.

I think one of the benefits is that you can control the ambient sounds in the menu, in separate slider from the regular sounds (speakers).

    Apparently not:

    Quote

Control of volume by 'Ambient Volume' menu setting

If you want to give the player user-friendly control over the sound volume (as with ambient music, which some players prefer off), include the keypair "s_music" "1" on the speaker entity.
