  1. Oddity thanks that all of us are programmed, except him of course. I guess he isn't human. He wasn't born by mere human parents, he decended down from upon the stars to us.
  2. Yes, that reminds me of the story of the manager and the fisher. The fisher wants to have a content live on the sea, and so every day if throws his nets in the morning, sells what he needs for the day, and enjoys the rest of the day for what he wants. The manager says, that he also wants to live a content life on the sea, so he works hard for the first twenty years, doesn't take vacation and lives quite a miserable live, always with the goal to live a content life afterwards. When the 20 years are over, he thinks that this is not enough to really live a piecefull live without work, so he works another 10 years very hard, and then he gets a heart attack and dies. Or to use a quote from Officespace: They were talking about what they would do with if they ever got a million dollar and could retire from work: Peter Gibbons: What would you do if you had a million dollars? Lawrence: I'll tell you what I'd do, man, two chicks at the same time, man. Peter Gibbons: That's it? If you had a million dollars, you'd do two chicks at the same time? Lawrence: Damn straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I had a million dollars I could hook that up, cause chicks dig a dude with money. Peter Gibbons: Well, not all chicks. Lawrence: Well the kind of chicks that'd double up on a dude like me do. Peter Gibbons: Good point. Lawrence: Well what about you now? what would you do? Peter Gibbons: Besides two chicks at the same time? Lawrence: Well yeah. Peter Gibbons: Nothing. Lawrence: Nothing, huh? Peter Gibbons: I'd relax, I would sit on my ass all day, I would do nothing. Lawrence: Well you don't need a million dollars to do nothing, man. Just take a look at my cousin, he's broke, don't do shit.
  3. We have not established this. It's your assumpation but that doesn't makes it true. I don't need to stand out above the crowd, because I already told you that I don't really care about the crowd. I care about my very own personal life, and wether I think it is a good one or not, but I don't need constantly compare it to others just to see if it is a good one. Well, that's life. There ARE a million others who can take your place, and nobody, except your friends and parents, would notice if you are gone or not even there. That's a fact. You seem to me like the people from the last centuries, who thought that the earth was the center of the universe and that it was something special. It's not. The only special you can make of it is, what YOU do with your life. Yeah, that's one way to spend a life. Not a happy one in my opinion, but, hey!, it's your life anyway. Who says that I'm content? Just because I don't constantly compare myself to other people, doesn't mean that I'm stuck in a contendedness which stops me from getting better. The point is, if I try to get better in doing some things, then it is because I want it so, not because somebody else is better. It is a logical consequence that others will become worse while I get better, but that doesn't really make me more happy. If I get better at playing icehockey, I'm happy about it, and also the team finds me more valuable, but even if I'm a bad player, and I only get better in my small way, which may be inconsequential to the team's success, I can still enjoy that I get better. Not sure if you know what I mean. Same with modelling. I get better at it. I know that you are much better, but that doesn't change, that I can enjoy my own improvements. I also know that, in a few years, I might look back at my earlier models, and think how bad they are, but this is from a new point of view, so it doesn't really matter. At the time I do it, they are the best I can achieve and if this is better then before, than it's something that I can enjoy. If I would always compare myself, like you do, I probably would stop entirely doing anything out of frustration, because there is always bound to be somebody who is better. You can make something out of your life and still enjoy it. And yes, I don't think that I'm THAT important that it actually makes any difference. In the long run, even "important" people like Bush or Merkel don't make a difference. It's the average people that make the difference with all their small contributions, even if every now and then there comes somebody along doing a bigger contribution, like Ghandi, Einstein or others.
  4. And why should I care? Whats so bad loving the same stuff as a view millions other? It doesn't change that I like it as well. I never really cared for wether other people like the same stuff that I do, or hold the same opinions. If they do it may be convenient, or even helpful, but if not, it doesn't really matter. If you are individual, it doesn't matter to you wether you are average or not, unless you define your individuality only by being jealous what others have or don't have. I can only laugh about such pitifull attempts of being "individual" because this doesn't look individually to me at all. It looks more to me like the frustrated attempt of somebody who can't get along with himself, and thus always has to look for others to make himself feel superior if he manages to do some little thing better then they.
  5. Ha, I didn't notice that one. Well, the problem with the internet is that emotions don't carry over so well. I often don't put the smileys to make the sentence appear sweeter, I put it there when I feel it funny. Laughing can go both ways. I can laugh about you and I can laugh with you, but unfortunately it's hard to convey this with a simple smiley. So don't think that those smileys were meant to be friendly, they just carry my mirth about your nonsensical attitude. (Same applies to this smiley here, just to clarify).
  6. I feel the same about icehockey! Really! I wanted to play as a kid, then I got denied because I was to old by then (already 7) and I frogot about it, because I believed that I was to old. Only now, by chance I started to get this idea again and I really love it. If I had known earlier that I was only to old for professional hockey, but that there are also hobby teams I would have started really early, because I always loved skating. I never liked much about team sports, except american football, but icehockey is really the only sports that I now even go to the arena and watch it, when I can't do it myself. Really a pity, but I have to live with it. No point in whinning that the last years were wasted and that you should have done it earlier, because you didn't. At least I'm not doing the same mistake with my son. Because he also likes it, and he is at the proper age to get started, so he got the opportunity. I know this may sound as if I try to put this on my son, because I couldn't myself, but he really enjoys it.
  7. Why would th eplayer even notice that one guard of the other is vanishing??? If the guards stay around, the player would find corpses, and if they vanish, he would simply assume that the mapper forgot to put a decent number of guards.
  8. Yes, that's the funny part. He holds basically the same narrow minded view that millions others also have and had in the past, and thinks that makes him any different.
  9. Funny thing is, that there are about 7 billion people living on the planet. Even if only 1% of it is as narrow minded as Oddity, then there are at least 9*10^7 people as he is. And he really thinks that he is something special, as if he were capable of thinking a thought that hasn't thought before. There is a difference between beeing original or individual and being rude. Oddity confuses rudness with being something special.
  10. I wouldn't say that he is abnormal, just on the lower end of the scale. Not everybody can be perfeclty average, no matter how he craves for it. Probably a very mild form of autism, or some psychological disfunction that doesn't allow him to feel empathy. Either that, or he is the average internet jerk who has a miserable life and compensates it on a forum by acting the the jerk he doesn't dare to be in real life.
  11. Let me guess: I'm leet. I'm the best. Nobody is as good as me...
  12. I haven't talked about an specifics, I made a general statement. You know, I always find it quite funny, when people start to brag about their individualism, while all they do is being quite normal. I can see the same trend in my daughter which starts to get into her puberty. She also thinks she needs to be "different" while at the same time she doesn't realize that this is a perfectly ordinary process. Well, of course she doesn't know better, so that's ok. One would assume though that an old man like you are beyond that stage finally. It's always quite fun to watch these people. The try do things differently in many different ways, some of them being grumpy like you, and all the time thinnk that they are kind of "different" while they act perfectly in the range of the normal behaviour, even though they may not be in the exact middle of it. It takes a lot more to be original or different, then just acting offensive, strange or whatever you think it means. And you can't cover up your rudeness as a philosophical stance claiming to be superiour because you thought what nobody else thought before, because you didn't. I still haven't decided though, wether you are genuine, or just one of the many blokes who use the internet as their theater where they can act what they do not dare to in real life.
  13. I disagree. "Strongly individualistic" can still mean something positive. You can get along with poeple very well, but you are hard to convince. This is very different from being "abnormal" which IMO defines a very negative way of being "individualistic". Somebody can be perfectly normal in his interactions and still be individual, while with the term "abnormal" I can't really see this.
  14. Yeah, I always confused this two, until I realized this, and now I can remember them.
  15. I think you are confusing social activities with becoming a sheep. One doesn't necessarily imply the other. Actually I never liked IRC myself, because I feel that the forum is a much better place to discuss things. Depening on what you need. Also for a nwe team it's better to get along good. After all we have to work for a long time together, if we ever want to succeed, and so far it worked not so bad.
  16. There is a difference about all the "regular" patients, and if somebody is hit who you actually have a realtion with, even if it is such a remote one like with an author and his readers. Of course I can't say that I'm emotionally affected in a strong way. I don't know Pratchet personally, only have seen his photos on his books and don't know much more about the person. I have read quite a lot of his books (if not all), definitely much more then from any other single author, and I really enjoyed them. So reading that he has a severe illness, that will affect his writing in the end, makes me kind of sad. Well, of course it's selfish, because If feel a pang of regret if I couldn't read any new books from him. But his books are all I know from him, and unless I can travel to a convention where he might show up, I doubt that this will change. Maybe Pratchet frequents this forum as well, seeing that he is a fan of Thief FMs, I wouldn't be surprised if he might be aware of this mod as well. I for one would feel honoured if he would show up here and post some encouragement. Well, maybe not, because I always would have doubts if it was the real one. Butt Oddity, you really come across like the pure role model for a misanthrop, a lot of times.
  17. Yes. I guess you are right. The whole mod is really pointless if it wouldn't work on Vista, so I guess we should immediatley stop all the work on it and make sure that everything is Vista Ready instead.
  18. A static entity is still an entity, and you should be able to make any entity frobable by setting the, surprise, frobable keyword on the spawnarg to 1. Of course that doesn't automatically make it highlight as well, because you have to use an appropriate material file for that.
  19. Don't mind what Oddity says. He's just a grumpy old man, and it will get worse before he gets older. I guess he is the type of guy whol will sit in his chair when he is old and ramble on about how bad the world is in general and how everything goes down the drain and every now and then he will strike out with his crutch and randomly hit somebody blaming it on his old age. He probably is a lone child craving for attention.
  20. I know. Thousands of forum user crying for help are just initiated from evil linux user to spread the lie. LOL
  21. We already have code that messes with new FMs. The actual installation is pretty easy in Doom. Just drop it in the folder. Our "installer" is similar to that.
  22. Actually I felt that the movies degraded quite a lot after the second. Yes, the first two felt more like kids movies, but they had a great atmosphere, which they started to lack from the third on. Well, also the books are like this to some extent. The first ones feel like kids book, while the later ones get more serious as well. But still, I don't really like the direction the movies are taking.
  23. You can do everything in Doomedit. The only difference is that you have to set all the spawnargs yourself, where DR knows about them and can set them with a visual interface (like S&R for example). So it's some extra work, but definitely doable.
  24. Yeah. That was exactly why I got pissed off about these postings. It's not as if everybody just sits here and waits for some Vista user to complain and immediatly rush to the rescue. It's an open project and anybody can do what he likes (sort of), but there is no obligation that we have to support soemthing that some users might deem absolutely necessary. I would also like to get some models and sound effects for my maps, but I can't expect all the others stop working on their stuff just to accommodate me, so I have to either do it myself, or if I can't ask poeple if they can do it and wait until I find somebody who can do it. Really! No matter how much some think that Vista will fly, which it may not, because MS has problems selling it, except to the stupid people who think they are cewl if they put up with everything that MS throws at them. If it works, it's fine, and if not, well that's a problem that early adopters always have.
  25. You know, I watched Harry Potter. In the first two movies the setting was pretty consistent. In the third or fourth movie, suddenly the location was extremly changed for no reason. I mean, they already had the first movies, so it wouldn't have been a problem to look at them. But no, suddenly there was a steep hill where none was before and so on. I found this quite annoying and inconsistent. We are not Thief . They don't need to have identical layouts, but major parts of the city should be consistent IMO. Also I doubt that there is really a problem with that, because most people wont run around in the city and measure if they are correct. This is mostly a story issue, than a mapping issue.
