  1. You keep your coffee in your car?
  2. It's more likely the config file though - I played it on ultra by mistake at first and all those same textures were black as they are .dds files.
  3. Just got a lovely new Sony Digital SLR for Christmas, and I'll be visiting Cracow for New Year, so I'll make sure to take as many shots of the old town and buildings and the underground salt chapels, etc. which will hopefully make some nice concept shots or texture sources. I'm excited already!
  4. I believe you can post new threads, just not new posts. It's might annoying, but I'm sure they'll fix it at some point.
  5. Oh I am very aware of it, I don't pretend it's a good effort at all in that regard. I know all about the loudness wars (people are bored to tears of me railing against modern records) and it may seem an odd choice, but considering these are demos, I chose a sort of mid-ground - you should try listening to a Killers album - seriously, it's ridiculous if you look at the waveform what they do. The environment is absolutely awful, a combination of headphones and a simple consumer hi fi system, on this pc I have surround sound speakers but it's still not great really. What I really need to do at some point is head over to my dad's and use his powered monitors (he's a part time voiceover artist and has a much better set up). However, it's never going to be as good as a professional thing. It doesn't help that everything was recorded in a room with no acoustic treatment whatsoever.
  6. I think probably in this context, great lyrics = great profit. However, it's absurd, especially considering a high volume of songs which are on "downers" yet are hugely popular.
  7. Simply because it is the sound to which people have become accustomed. Indeed, I like the sound of Radiohead's records which clip a fair bit (since the Bends at least, as do Sigur Ros's). I know it's rather contrary, but I also know that these are demos and have to stand out in environments where over compressed recordings stand out (and these days, are the norm) - like on ipods, and in cars - and that since I have access to all of the original mixes I can remaster to my hearts content for people who really want the best fidelity of these demo tracks.
  8. no, I'm not using SM58s on the vocals. Everything was condensers (except the bass drum). And I mastered it myself (pay? I haven't paid for anything!), and I know it clips (it was a concious decision to allow it to clip, like many records do these days). You're obviously paying closer attention to the tiny details than I was, though! If you would like to have a go, I can send you some raw mixes in a lossless compression. The vocals are so high on purpose, just to make the words stick out, but I agree it's too much in many cases. I'm not going to record any more to mitigate the few problems, the sessions are over for this batch. And they are only demos! The problems with the drums will be how they were engineered, although I realize I could play around more at the EQ stage - we did two overheads, one snare and one bass drum mic through a stereo mixer. I did some panning to put the ride cymbal on the right but that could have resulted in too much being over there. It's worse on some tracks than others. In fact, if you use Audition (what version?) I could send you the sessions but they run to an awful lot of Mb, and I don't know if you have everything I used (I employed Izotope plugin for the mastering stuff). Thanks a lot for listening and taking the time to give such in-depth feedback! I'm sorry you don't like the singer, I got a lot of that off TTLG too, and I don't really know what to do because apart from being one of the best members of the band, I also rather like his voice and it just makes me think there's something I'm missing???
  9. Thanks, although from my perspective they do all "go somewhere" - either musically or instrumentally - like two birds repeats but with the added percussion and high voice becomes more dramatic - it's like a storm. Thanks again for listening, though. You may find some of them grow on you! Like mould!
  10. Whilst I can't boast getting someone pregnant (or even just having had sex (or even IVF)), I have finished 10 demo recordings with my band! a zip file, 35.5Mb, 128kb/s mp3 format, all tagged www.thedebtoffensive.com/thedebtoffensive.zip Featuring 10 original songs written between June 2006 and probably about February 2007 (I have written a lot more during and since that time, but these are the ones we've played). Recorded over this summer in my house with a mixer off ebay, some decent budget mics and a computer. Pretty much all multitracked because we haven't the facility to record more than one instrument/person at a time really, which led to problems of its own. Anyway, enjoy!
  11. My first thought was that you'd made a thread to announce that you'd just had sex. Congratulations!
  12. Yes, coincidences are strange but you have to remember that 99% of the time you get on a train you don't meet someone you know, and of course that experience passes by without a thought; you don't think "that was weird, there wasn't a single person I knew on that train". It's the same when you find out connections between people you know from different places; there are lots of people I know who know other people I've met in entirely different circumstances, but really, it's not so surprising when you consider that we all live in the same general area of the UK, belong to the same social class, tend to have similar levels of education - and therefore mix in certain similar circles. As to the argument rich mentioned, you could say it's the same as thinking; there is THIS precise arrangement and composition of energy, atoms, molecules, whatever particles we haven't discovered yet; and there are THESE laws (which we may not know about for sure) which govern their behaviour; since THIS arrangement exists, THIS outcome is the only possible one. Such as a hypothetical universe where a ball must bounce; it can only bounce because those are the laws. Of course, this doesn't mean we can predict events on such a grand scale because we don't have access to all the information, but it's still a weird thought that for instance I CAN ONLY be writing these words and have no real choice; it's simply a result of every atom and piece of energy interacting in the universe. On a more simplified scale it's a result of the electrons firing in my brain, and I only have one brain and one arrangement of neurons within it so they can only fire one way given the right stimulus, right?
  13. I'm not sure which is more depressing, the fact that sparhawk can still be bothered to argue with Oddity, or the fact that Oddity is calling people names on an internet forum.
  14. Besides, it could be effectively argued (if anyone mad enough ever imagined a case coming to court) that Thievery UT set a precedent as no action was taken against it, being similar in inspiration but again, no material was copied from Thief so it was fine. As will the Dark Mod be.
  15. Thanks! Well, it's a rehearsal studio so it's not designed for recording. And we were running two microphones, one for the band, one for the singer, so there's a lot of each on both tracks if you see what I mean, as the singer was also coming through monitors and a PA system, etc. They were all single-takes, the only "editing" was some compression/EQ to help with the definition.

We recorded (very rudimentarily) some live demos at our last rehearsal, which you can now hear at www.myspace.com/thedebtoffensive Any comments are welcome - and I hope you enjoy it!
  17. Lord of the Rings might have been done in british accents since it's based on a novel by an Englishman whose works aim to create a pseudo-mythology for England?
  18. However, it is hard to pull off an accent (ref: Dick Van Dyke, Mary Poppins; Natalie Portman, V for Vendetta) so in some cases I'd rather voice actors stick to what they can do rather than attempt something and fail embarrassingly. I agree mostly with what you're saying, however I also found it strange in Gladiator that they were talking English with British accents - talking English is inauthentic enough, it shouldn't matter if Russell Crowe uses his native accent or not, should it? It's no less authentic!
  19. But there isn't one American or one English accent, so that is meaningless even if you could hypothesise such a thing. For instance, Kelsey Grammar's accent is much closer to one sort of "English" accent than a Texan yokel, but what we recognise as "English" in his voice is not shared by all English accents - it's not Cornish or cockney, and certainly not at all northern.
  20. perhaps it's because you're insecure about your penis-to-body size ratio that you don't have a girlfriend or boyfriend DID YOU THINK OF THAT???
  21. some of the best hard-hitting dramas have canned laughter haven't you ever watched fawlty towers?
  22. I think it might be an example of what we call "humour"
